Gathering Game
Story
Shere Khan’s Bone
Mowgli’s Brothers part 1
Create a circle about 7 metres across using rope or chalk
and place a “bone” in the middle. The bone can be rolled
newspaper, a clean dog chew bone, etc.
Ask either a third year Cub Scout or Kim to tell the
younger Cub Scouts the first part of the story, Mowgli’s
Brothers (from The Jungle Book) so they will have an
idea what we mean by Wolf Cubs. (The first part of the
story ends where Father Wolf says, “But what will our
pack say?)
How to Play:
One Cub Scout, Shere Khan, is posted in the circle to
defend the bone. The rest of the Cub Scouts become
jackals. Shere Khan can touch any jackal that enters the
circle — whether the jackal has the bone or not —
putting the jackal out of action.
Any player who gets the bone and gets out of the circle
without being touched becomes the new Shere Khan
and the game starts over.
There shouldn’t be more than 10 attackers at a time. If
there are more Cub Scouts, play several games at once
with more circles.
Note: Establish your storytelling formation. Cub Scouts
sit cross-legged in a circle, far enough apart so one youth
cannot bother another. The storyteller sits like the Cub
Scouts in the circle.
Tag Game
Pack, Pack, Pack
Show Cub Scouts how to form a circle (see “Grand
Howl”) and practice “Pack” and “Pack, Pack, Pack”
signals, without attempting the actual Grand Howl.
How to Play:
Cub Scouts play a regular tag game. Throughout the
game have either a third year Cub Scout or Kim:
1. Stand in the centre of the hall and call out “Pack!” —
the signal for Cub Scouts to freeze.
2.
Call out “Pack, Pack, Pack!” The Cub Scouts respond
by shouting a long drawn-out “P-a-a-a-a-ck!” as
they run to form a circle. They stand shoulder to
shoulder around the person calling.
3. Cub Scouts take three paces back to form a circle
and stand at alert. (You may decide to signal the
start of the three paces with a nod of the head.)
Repeat several times during the game.

Activities
Game
Salute, Handshake, Promise,
Law and Motto
Stuck on You
Explain the salute, handshake, Promise, Law and Motto
(using The Cub Scout Book). Divide the pack into small
groups. Write the Law on a piece of paper and give
them a chance to study it; then call them back for
a jigsaw relay.
Give each Cub Scout a piece of masking tape 10 cm
(four inches) long. Holding the tape in one hand, they
scatter throughout the playing area. The intent of the
game is to tag someone with the tape before getting
taped by someone else.
Jigsaw Relay
If successful, Cub Scouts can return to the leaders for
another piece of tape and try to “stick” someone else.
Print the Law on long strips of cardboard – one for each
team. Cut each cardboard strip into pieces and arrange
face down on the floor at the opposite end of the room
from each team. On a signal, Cub Scouts in turn run
up, turn over a piece of the puzzle, and fit it into the
sentence. The first team completing it correctly wins.
If a Cub Scout gets tagged, he sits down on the ground.
If he still has a piece of tape, he can try to tag someone
else as they pass by. If able to do so, he can jump up and
join in the game again.
Play this game outside.
The winner is the last Cub Scout standing.
Story
Mowgli’s Brothers part 2
In the story circle, tell the second section of the story
Mowgli’s Brothers, from The Jungle Book. (This section
ends where Mowgli enters the wolf pack at the price of a
bull, and on Baloo’s good word.)
Closing
Practice forming the closing circle (as above). Explain
pack dues and announce the time and place of the next
meeting.
“Good Hunting!” Dismiss the Cub Scouts.
