Kindergarten Movement!
GO EAGLES GO!
September 2013
Hello Eglinton Kindergarten Parents!
My name is Matthew Leverty. I am your child’s Kindergarten Movement Teacher
this year. Your child will meet with me 3 times a week for 40 minutes for exciting
movement activities! Movement classes take place in the cafeteria, gym and outside in the
schoolyard.
Movement incorporates music, drama, dance and physical and health education. We take
part in a variety of games and activities that focus on gross and fine motor development as
well as following instructions, participation, taking turns, honesty, teamwork and
sportsmanship. Safety, Hygiene, Nutrition and Physical development are also incorporated
into the program. All students have been placed in squads (Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, White,
Black) and have a squad order number (1,2,3,4,5). Squads and numbers are used to quickly
organize groups and teams. They are also used to manage how students sit for instruction (in
rows, in squad order).
In Movement class, we partake in a variety of activities that require proper footwear and
clothing. In order to safely participate in movement activities, students need to wear running
shoes. Running shoes with a closed toe and ankle support (with working laces or velcro
straps) should be worn to participate in movement activities inside the school or in the
schoolyard. Please note: “Sandal-type” running shoes are not an acceptable form of footwear
for movement activities. Athletic running shoes for the purpose of physical activity work the
best. This is an important safety concern and is for the benefit of all our students. Thank
you!
I recommend that students wear comfortable athletic clothing that is appropriate for
movement activities. I would also like to dissuade students from wearing jeans or dangly
jewellery. Students should be prepared for both indoor and outdoor activities and should
dress and layer appropriately.
I am always available in my office near the gym should you wish to discuss your child’s
progress in Movement class. Looking forward to a great year of Movement activities!
Regards,
Matthew Leverty
