Message from Rabbi Simon
On the Payroll, In the Office and Working for You - 24/6
I hope you are enjoying a restful, relaxing and
energizing summer. I am slowly but surely
acclimating to Temple life, if not the weather.
Most importantly, I am now here and if you
are in the building, please stop in to say hello.
And if you need/want more time, I am always
available to sit with you face to face.
Throughout the year, I will occasionally use
my Message to tell you a little about what an
Interim Senior Rabbi does in general and what I will be doing
specifically at Temple Israel. Here is a (hopefully) cogent
summary of my general goals for the year.
1.The Interim Rabbi helps the congregation to move from
mourning (i.e. - what has occurred) via a grief process that
takes on many forms.
2.The Interim Rabbi helps the congregation to move from the
past so that, together, we can create a new future.
3.The Interim Rabbi helps the congregation to prepare for the
future by working with the Congregation and its leaders so that
everyone understands the need to move forward.
4.If working together we successfully complete steps 1,2, and
3, I can then help the congregation to embrace the future
by a. stimulating a new way of thinking, b. helping to reclaim
strengths, and c. identifying old patterns that must change in
order for us to move forward.
In order to achieve the above, it’s important that you understand
what I am and what I am not.
The Interim Rabbi is not a general, a dictator, a conquering
hero, the big decider or a guru. On the other extreme, I have not
come here to: be a babysitter, play golf, take up Lawn Bowling
or repose in my office watching soap operas and eating bonbons.( I don’t even have an ice box in my office!)

HOLD THE DATES! HIGH HOLYDAYS ARE COMING! SEE PAGE 5 FOR INFORMATION.

A Night at the Ballpark
So, the answer to the question of what I really am
is this: I have come here to be an advisor, enabler,
coach, guide, helper and facilitator. This is what I
refer to as being a “5C” Rabbi- a creator of crucial,
candid and constructive conversations.
One last thing. Temple Israel was not built by one
person alone. It has been nurtured and strengthened
for over a century by an entire Temple Community. If
we are to succeed, and I have no doubt we will, we
will need everyone in our congregation to commit
to our future. So don’t be surprised to hear me ask
this question of you when I meet you, or see you at
Temple events or even when you are in my office- Are
you willing and ready to commit yourself to helping
Temple Israel move to the future?
Enjoy the rest of summer- read a good book, wear
sun screen, have some FUN and relax a bit. Just don’t
pop into my office looking for bon-bons!
Shalom,
Rabbi Jim Simon

B’ruchim Ha’Baim (Welcome Home)! Many of our
youth and young adults spent their summer at Jewish
summer camps around the country (including the
URJ’s Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas) as
campers and staff. This summer I also spent a week at
GFC as faculty. While at GFC I learned with campers,
led bunk activities, and visited with our TI campers.
All are invited to join the Temple Israel family for a
camp-style Shabbat service on Friday, August 5 at
6:00 p.m.!
As we begin another year, may we find great
happiness from learning, praying, and being together.
Sunday Morning Adult Education Series
will resume on Sunday, September 11.
A New Year of Jewish Learning is Almost Here!
Parent Book Club
Shorashim Religious School Opening Sunday
While I hope that you are truly enjoying your summer
experiences, how good it will be to come back together
to learn, sing, pray, and see each other again! Our new
year of learning together for our preschoolers through
sixth graders, and their families, begins on Sunday,
August 28 at 9:30 a.m. in the Miller Auditorium with
a delicious and complimentary breakfast prepared by
our very own Temple Israel Brotherhood. Get ready
for a memorable opening program when we will
kick off our education theme for the year – “Oh, the
Jewish Places You’ll Go!” More on this theme to come!
The morning will be filled with lots of ruach (spirit)
and a few fun surprises. When students head off for
some community building and learning activities
with teachers and madrichim, parents will have an
opportunity to learn with, and get to know Rabbi
Jim Simon. Our opening day will end at noon with
joyful closing prayers and songs. If families have not
received a link to complete online registration please
be in touch with me. We cannot wait to begin a new
year with you and your families!
This summer Shorashim parents came together for
a parent book club based on Dr. Wendy Mogel's
Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings
to Raise Self-Reliant Children facilitated by Jenn
Selco and Susan Woitte. Each chapter of Dr. Mogel's
book describes in detail nine blessings that guide
parents through the journey of parenthood. For a
summary of the blessings, refer to Lillian Hellman's
article in the July Jewish Review. Through the lens
of these blessings and Jewish teachings that Mogel
infuses throughout her book, parents shared traits
they most appreciated about their children, obstacles
to their goals as parents, and the importance of
community support - it truly takes a village! Jennifer
and Susan hope to facilitate other sessions based on
Jewish parenting books. Parents, grandparents, and
adults of the congregation are invited to join Rabbi
Simon and guest teachers each Sunday for adult
level learning and community building beginning on
Sunday, September 11. Good coffee, good bagels
and good study.
Hebrew Learning for our 3rd through 6th grade
students will begin on Wednesday, August 31 at 4:15
p.m. in the Youth Lounge. Our learning will conclude Young Kehillah
with a prayer service at 5:10 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
Parents are invited to participate. Hebrew Learning
Congregants in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and their families

Sisterhood
Social Justice
Over the summer, your Sisterhood board has
been hard at work planning new programs for our
members. Our Opening Program is scheduled for
Sunday, September 11. The program will focus on the
upcoming November elections and will also include
the installation of our new board members as well
as a delicious brunch. Invitations will be sent out
in August with reservation and further information
about the program.
The Social Justice Committee is excited to build upon
its Mitzvah of the Month program. The committee
has decided to rest the annual Mitzvah Day for now
and plans to organize monthly projects that allow
congregants to embrace the spirit of Tikkun olam
throughout the year. Remember, the committee
does not act alone in these endeavors – all members
of the TI family are invited to participate in making
our world a better place! You’ll be receiving updates
on upcoming programs via the bulletin and weekly
e-blasts. If you see a project that interests you, please
don’t hesitate to contact either of the Social Justice
co-chairs: Barbara Waxman (barbara.woodfin@
gmail.com or 508-785-5447) or Melissa VonAschenCook ([email protected] or 918-6459858).
Sisterhood is looking for new volunteers for the
Judaica shop. Any congregants who are interested,
can contact either Peg Kishner or Mary Arlan. We
are planning a training session for all Judaica Shop
volunteers and we would welcome some new faces.
It’s a fun way to make new friends and connect with
your Temple Family.

Nope, this is not a notice from a sweepstakes. Even
better, it is the Temple Israel In-House gift program.
It is a simplified way to make n’davot – gift offerings
– in support of one or more Temple funds throughout
the year.
Here’s how it works:
• Make a payment to Temple of at least $180 to establish your own In-House account. You receive your charitable tax deduction at this point.
• Throughout the fiscal year (from July 1 to June 30) call the Temple office at 918-747-1309 or send an email to [email protected] or come by in person to let us know:
• Who you are honoring (their address if they are not Temple members)
• What the honor is for
• Which Temple fund you want the donation to go to
• And how much you want transferred (at least chai, $18)
• Your donation will be noted in the BulleTIn and the recipient will be notified.

Sing in the Choir!
Sing with the Temple Israel High Holy Day Choir!
Calling all singers to join us in sacred song! Contact
Cantor Steinsnyder at [email protected] for
details and Eliot Glaser at [email protected] for the
full rehearsal schedule! We'd love to include you in
the choir!
In addition, you can also use your In-House account to
pay Brotherhood, Sisterhood, or ARZA dues and for
your annual Memorial Book contribution.
If there is any money left in your In-House account
at the end of the fiscal year (June 30), it will be
transferred to the fund of your choice or to the
Temple’s General Fund and then you can renew your
In-House Gift account for the next year.

So how is this a Win-Win-Win? You make one
payment and we will keep track of the donations for
you, recipients are honored, and you get immediate
tax recognition. It’s a guaranteed win, unlike a
sweepstakes!
Part three of our series.
Bring your own picnic dinner at
5:45 p.m. (drinks and utensils
provided). Then welcome Shabbat
“In the Round” at a casual,
relaxed service for all. Following
the Service, Burton and Benita
Boxerman, cousins of Harvey and
Sandy Blumenthal, will speak about
“Jews in Baseball”. Enjoy a baseball
themed Oneg. All are welcome.

Temple members who enroll their children at Happy
Campers receive priority for admission and a 10%
discount on tuition!
Happy Campers at Temple Israel
If you have been in the Temple Israel building during
the daytime, Monday through Friday, you may have
noticed happy preschool age children playing on the
playground and walking through the halls with their
teachers. These children are the students at Happy
Campers at Temple Israel.
Having such a thriving preschool community in our
midst certainly makes us feel like happy campers!
We look forward to our partnership with Happy
Campers at Temple Israel continuing to be strong
and mutually beneficial for years to come.
Two years ago, Happy Campers owner, Cindy Alonso,
opened her school’s second location at Temple Israel.
Happy Campers’ first location remains in operation
on Fifteenth Street. We are so pleased that Happy
Campers has a strong reputation and that they have
been wonderful tenants who are very supportive
of our congregation.
Enrollment continues to
grow as word spreads about the many wonderful
things happening in their classrooms and about the
improvements and renovations that we have recently
completed.

ShalomFest 2016!
ShalomFest 2016 is Coming!
Even though it is still summer, ShalomFest 2016
is just around the corner on September 25!
ShalomFest Chair, John Sieler ([email protected]),
and his team are hard at work making plans for a
terrific celebration of Jewish culture. ShalomFest
is the flagship program of Temple Israel in which
we welcome the greater Tulsa community to taste,
celebrate, experience, and learn about the richness of
Jewish life. ShalomFest also offers Temple members
a chance to work side by side to create a day that is
memorable and meaningful for all. ShalomFest does
not happen without YOU! We hope you will join John,
ShalomFest committee chairs, the Board of Trustees,
and the temple staff to help make ShalomFest great.
Their facility on the second floor of our Temple has
been recently upgraded with new paint, carpet, sinks
and cabinetry. These updates have created a clean
and cheerful environment conducive to learning and
play. Our thanks to the Temple Israel Foundation
which provided the funds for the renovations.
Outside on the playground, turf surfacing has been
installed to replace the rubber chips that had been
in use. The new surface is safer, cleaner and more
attractive and is being enjoyed by children and
teachers alike. This upgrade was funded by individual
donations from Temple members in partnership with
funding from Happy Campers.
There are two ways to get involved:
1. Make sure to sign up to volunteer. Contact Volunteer
Co-Chairs Melissa Von Aschen Cook and Bracken
Klar at [email protected] or look for the
sign up genius link in your weekly email.
Happy Campers’ teachers are well trained and
receive on-going professional development. Their
students are provided with healthy meals prepared
daily onsite. Every Friday, Happy Campers students
have the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat in our

David Fist
Two Temple Pillars
By Rabbi Emeritus Charles Sherman
& Nancy Sherman
On January 18, 2008 Temple’s sixth Honorary
President David Fist died. In his eulogy, Rabbi
Sherman noted: “Let it be said on this Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day of Commemoration that David Fist,
perhaps more than anybody else, helped his beloved
Tulsa Public School System navigate the difficult
transitions involved in school desegregation. He
made sure that his clients followed the law . . . and
that prayer in schools and other contentious issues
which divided many other school systems in this land
would not divide this community which he so dearly
loved . . . In 1995 this congregation presented him its
Amudim Award because David Fist was truly a pillar
of this Temple. When he finished his presidency, he
went on to serve for many years as President of the
Temple Israel Foundation. But, behind the scenes
here, David wrote all the contracts, resolved the gray
areas, and advised our lay leaders and me on such
a wide variety of issues from personnel matters to
child abuse guidelines . . . David was truly one of
the giants in our midst. He helped shape this Jewish
community into what it is today.”
This was the second time Rabbi Sherman invited
every non-Jewish spouse in the Temple Family
to come forward during the service and receive a
special congregational blessing.
In 2009, upon recommendation of the Ritual
Committee, the Board adopted Mishkan Tefillah as
the congregation’s primary siddur. Temple Israel
led the other five Jewish institutions into becoming
the first MAZON community, which means that all
of the Jewish institutions contributed a percentage
of their food event income to MAZON. It was also
noted that over the past 13 years, since introducing
our unique subsidy program, the Temple had sent
393 students to Greene Family Camp.
In 2008 Sisterhood held its very first Women’s Seder;
more than 50 women attended. At the 2008 Annual
Meeting, Malcolm and Paula Milsten were elected
Co-Honorary Presidents. Maura Pollak and Linda
Spiegelberg were thanked for the outstanding job
they had done as Interim Co-Educators during the
past year. Rabbi Anna Beroll assumed the position
of Assistant Rabbi/Educator as of July 2008.
In 1945 Temple Israel had produced a publication
called “Salute!”, a tribute to the Tulsa Jewish men
and women who served in the United States Armed
Forces during World War II. Temple reproduced an
updated version of “Salute!” which was sent to all
members of the Jewish community in the Fall of
2009.
In August 2008 – 45 years after coming to Temple
Israel – Cantor Emeritus Harry Sebran died. Rabbi
Sherman eulogized his colleague and dear friend
with these words. “He was a very intelligent man
but he chose to hide his intellect and his enormous
sensitivity beneath a barrage of the worst puns and
jokes imaginable. He was as sensitive a human being
as I’ve ever known. He had special antennae which
picked up signals from people who were hurting. .
. Individuals of all ages who knew nowhere else to
turn, knew they could turn to Cantor Sebran. . . Gifted
teacher, sensitive counselor, caring friend, peerless
role model, consummate mensch, Cantor Harry
Sebran is truly one of the pillars of Temple Israel.”
At the September Outreach Shabbat almost 100
non-Jewish individuals in the Temple Family who
were raising Jewish children and/or supporting their
Jewish spouse in his/her Jewish living were honored.
December 4-6, 2009, was the 95th Anniversary
Celebration, chaired by Co-Honorary Presidents
Malcolm and Paula Milsten. On Friday evening,
Rabbi Daniel Freelander, Senior Vice President of
the URJ, spoke and there was special music by
The Levites followed by a lavish Oneg Shabbat.
Saturday evening, noted Jewish performer Danny
Maseng appeared in concert in the sanctuary; on
Sunday morning, there was a special children’s’
concert for the Religious School.
