Outline of Our Work for The Summer Term – Year 4 Numeracy: We will be developing these skills and concepts: ● 4 & 5 digits numbers ● multiplying & dividing by 10 & 100 ● times tables - 11 & 12 ● ladder method multiplication ● Roman numerals ● area & perimeter ● properties of 2D & 3D shapes ● 2 place decimals, percentages and their equivalent fractions How you can help: ● Ensure all ActiveLearn allocated online homework is completed on time ● Continue to practise & master times tables up to 12. ● Apply the above concepts to multi-step word problems. ● Discuss & practise money problems when shopping or in restaurants. ● Calculate area & perimeter of rooms/garden/objects at home. Language and Literacy: We will be developing these skills and concepts: Grammar: ● negative word contractions ● pronouns ● synonym verbs ● adverb clauses Spelling: ● homophones ● syllables ● -ive suffixes ● unstressed vowels Creative Writing: ● summaries ● solving problems in stories ● advertisements ● points of views -book blurbs Reading/Comprehension: ● reading independently a variety of genres & answering questions to demonstrate understanding ● give full written response to text restating the question ● give an oral response/opinion about text & listen to other’s responses ● using a dictionary to help & inform understanding ● skimming & scanning techniques for locating keywords & relevant information How you can help: ● visit the library as often as possible - take out CDs and DVDs as well as books.. ● buy dual-language books if English isn’t your family’s first language - you can talk about books and stories, and develop a love for them, in any language. ● look for books on topics that you know your child is interested in ● make sure that children’s books and dictionaries are easily accessible around your home. ● take time to discuss & ask questions about characters, settings, plots and vocabulary. Science: Animals Including Humans- Teeth, Digestion & Food Chains We will be developing these skills and concepts: ● Learn about the first stage of the digestive system, consider why our teeth are different shapes and have different functions ( exploring, researching, analysing secondary sources) ● Use everyday objects to demonstrate the human digestive system (exploring) ● Use physical activity to demonstrate an understanding of the functions of each part of the digestive system (exploring) ● Find out what we can learn from a poo (exploring, researching, analysing secondary sources) ● Interpret food chains and discuss the impact of changes to a chain (exploring, researching, analysing secondary sources) How can you help: ● ● ● ● discuss the differences between human & animal teeth allow your children access to relevant information about the human digestive system schedule your bi-annual dentist appointment with a view to discussing the structure of teeth,care & hygiene watch wildlife programs which explain how digestive system works in animals History: The Ancient Egyptians We will be developing these skills and concepts: ● Investigate through role play & drama the experience of Ancient Egyptians ● Explore emotions & feelings related to event in this period ● Using timelines to order events ● Use appropriate vocabulary related to topic ● Understand that information can be found from a variety of sources What we will be covering this topic: ● Who were the Ancient Egyptians? ● What was life like in Ancient Egypt? ● Study of mummies ● Tutankhamun How you can help ● Support and complement your child’s knowledge with information from books, documentaries and the internet. ● Visit any museums that have Ancient Egyptians exhibits. ● Encourage art & craft activities that reflect ancient Egyptian culture. Homework serves to reinforce the learning which takes place in school. ● Homework activities set for your child may not always correspond to the order of the skills listed above. ● Homework sheets must be signed by parents each week; this signals to teachers that an effective dialogue has taken place between each child and their parent. Year 4 half termly project is: We will be learning about Ancient Egyptians during this Summer term. Please bring in one research task and one creative activity from the list provided below. • • Research tasks: Use hieroglyphs to write a message. Create a fact file on a famous Ancient Egyptian. Write an explanation for how the pyramids were constructed. Create a project book on different aspects of Ancient Egyptian life e.g. work, family, religion. Find out some interesting facts about Ancient Egypt and create a multiple choice quiz. Research the importance of the River Nile and how it was used. Write a biography of an Ancient Egyptian God & illustrate . • • • • • • • • • Creative Tasks: Design a death mask for Tutankhamun. Design / make an Ancient Egyptian Mummy Sarcophagus. Make a pyramid model. Could you show what it might look like inside? Design a tourist leaflet to encourage tourists to visit Egypt. Create top trump cards using Ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.
