L A PG vaporizers are actually boilers. Instead of boiling water, they boil propane, butane, or another LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). It may sound strange that heat is required to vaporize LPG when propane will boil at -44 °F and butane at 32 °F, but, when LPG vaporizes by expansion alone, it causes a refrigeration action. In applications with high LPG flow, the uncontrolled vaporization would freeze valves and burner nozzles. Therefore, controlled heat is required to offset the refrigeration. action. Applications A ES Water Bath Vaporizers have been manufactured since 1974 and have seen continuous design improvement. This has lead to probably the most versatile and most reliable line of Water Bath Vaporizers on the market today. Installations around the world include Peak Shaving Plants for Gas Utilities, Standby Plants for large industrial users, Backup Systems for government and defense installations, Primary Fuel Source for areas without natural gas supply or for areas preparing for connection to natural gas, Power Plants, Glass and Brick Manufacturing, etc. AES Water Bath Vaporizers can be used “stand-alone”, or in combination with a LPG/Air mixing system, producing gas which is directly interchangeable with natural gas. The VWB series was specifically designed for applications where the owner prefers to use an existing hot water supply for the vaporization process. These models are also used in installations where local or national codes prohibit the use of any kind of open flame in the vaporization process of LPG. Compared to vaporizers with local heat sources, the VWB series offers the additional layer of safety due the lack of any high-power/high-energy component anywhere near the LPG. How do Alternate Energy Systems’ Vertical Water Bath Vaporizers work? V ertical Water Bath Vaporizers are available in capacities from 120 kg per hour (60 gph), to 2000 kg per hour (1000 gph). Larger capacities are achieved by combining several smaller units through liquid inlet and vapor outlet header, often on a common steel skid. From the outside, all models look alike. Internally, they differ primarily in the type and active heat exchange area of their vaporization tubes. The main advantage of Vertical Water Bath Vaporizers lies in the fact that through the use of an external hot water supply, local restrictions for the use of an open flame or electricity for the purpose of vaporization of LPG can easily be avoided. The drawing below shows a typical configuration of a 360 kg/h (180 gph) vaporizer. The main components of the vaporizer are the Water Inlet and Water Outlet (A), the coiled Vapor Tube (B), the Steel Shell (C), the Vapor Outlet Header (D) with Liquid Carryover Protection (E), and the Solenoid Vapor Shutoff Valve (F). Also shown on the drawing are the Water Tank Insulation (G), the Outer Sheet Metal Shell (H), the controls for Water Temperature (low / high) (I), and the Water Level Control (J). The active portions of the Heater Elements and the Vapor Tube are fully immersed in a warm water/anti-freeze solution, supplied by an external source. The external source (usually a boiler or commercial water heater) controls the the water temperature, the water level, and the water flow. The Temperature Controls (I) are provided to for convenience only, and are not used in the operation of the vaporizer. The heat from the water is transferred through the Vapor Tube (B) to the LPG, which then evaporates and exits the system through the Vapor Outlet Header (D). A Temperature Sensor (E) is inserted into the Vapor Outlet Header. This Temperature Sensor would detect any temperature drop, associated with the presence of liquid LPG. If this occurs, the Solenoid Valve (F) on the vapor outlet side closes and prevents liquid from exiting the N vaporizer (Liquid Carryover Protection). F Other components in the vaporizer are the explosion proof Junction Box (K), the Vapor Pressure Relief Valve (L), and the Manual Water Drain (O). K Models with capacities of 750 kg per hour and higher use vertically stacked vaporization tubes instead of the coiled versions of the smaller models.
