MEDIA ALERT
RAF TO ASSIST FAMILIES OF VICTIMS KILLED IN HORRIFIC R28 ROAD TOWARDS VEREENIGING
Road Accident Fund (RAF) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Eugene Watson, sends his condolences to
the families, friends and colleagues of those killed in the horrific accident that happened on the
R28 in Jagersfontein towards Vereeniging yesterday afternoon.
It is alleged that a taxi lost control after a tyre burst and collided with a truck. The taxi
apparently rolled multiple times and burst into flames. Five children and 14 adults reportedly
died in the crash, while five people were critically injured.
The RAF’s Johannesburg Regional General Manager, Primrose Mtshali, said her team had been
dispatched to various hospitals and police stations to gather more information about the
deceased. Meetings will be held with family members and funeral support claims costs will be
originated urgently for those who qualify and meet the required criteria.
Consultations will continue with the bereaved families after the funerals to originate claims for
loss of support for the surviving dependents, and qualifying heads of damages for the injured as
stipulated in the RAF Act.
Dr Watson urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations and to be extra vigilant
particularly as the festive season approaches.
