MASH FIGHT TEAM VISITS DETROIT HOME
(Mash Fight Team owner/operator – James Lee, left, is shown coaching at the Powerhouse Gym in
Farmington Hills with 2 other mixed martial artists from the newest Lansing chapter in a training session)
J
ames Lee appears to be the driving force behind many things as related to mixed
martial arts. Although when hearing “Mash Gym”, or “Mash Fight Team”, there are two
different people and places to consider in Michigan, the affiliation that Camp Tisdale has
forged is with Coach Lee out of Powerhouse Gym in Farmington Hills, Michigan. James
has affiliation not only now with Lansing and Camp Tisdale, but also Traverse City &
Grand Rapids chapters also.
So, what is James Lee and Mash Fight Team to Camp Tisdale? Self explanatory, Camp
Tisdale Community Center has volunteered to train the Mash Fight Team fighters that
James Lee supports and provides. Most of such is expected to be “local” type talent of
course, but even those from other cities and sites are expected to visit occasionally also
for mass training and additional certifications of trainers, hence our visit last week!
Jun 10th marked the day, Farmington Hills bound from Lansing, and all Mash Fight Team
of Lansing were inbound from the capital for our first mass training session. With various
qualified trainers and fighters on hand, the practice was worthwhile, especially to see
Coach Lee and show the team’s support for himself and his training. Although small in
comparison to actual Camp Tisdale, all participants were great to meet and work with.
See various pix below of our visit!
ANOTHER WRESTLER GRADUATES!
(Pictured left to right = Coach Shane w/ Dawaun Treadwell, graduate, and Camp Tisdale CEO – Rob Orr)
T
hat time of year once more – high school graduations, and welcoming in of summer once
MORE! Of course from a coaches standpoint, much more is at stake as the decision and abilities
of their wrestlers to graduate can be at times a challenge. Even more, what is the plan after
graduation for work, career, further college acceptance and schooling, wrestling or more? No one
probably has all those answers, and as we finish off the year, we are just glad to at least be able to
tell all our wrestlers how proud we are of them in at least making it this far,
CONGRATULATIONS!
Celebrating this year in graduations, first up, are both Everett Wrestlers with Angel Reyes,
previous “All-State” placer the year before last, and Dawaun Treadwell. From those knowing
about Dawaun, his career has been filled with various trials and tribulations, both in school plus
on the mat. But, as the school year ends off, he still found a way to get all done and still graduate.
For those that did NOT know, it is even more of a special day for us coaches to see Dawaun go,
as we have had the pleasure of seeing him grow into a high school graduate, but also successful
wrestler, multiple styles. Like many though, he did NOT start off a natural, and or even “ahead of
the game” like most. Having wrestling still in his blood though, he always stuck with it, a
testament to his own personal perseverance.
The way I remember Dawaun in fact, to be honest, was one of the few on the wrestling mat week
after week that not only never won, but vary rarely was ever even scoring points, kind of
embarrassing. This went on for years till the point that I never even knew if he truly was on
Everett Wrestling Club’s team or not! I questioned myself a lot to know why he was always
hanging out with Everett, who his family was, and WHY HE DID NOT JUST GIVE UP! I guess
I would only find out all this on my own over time as I found something between us that would
soon gravitate this young man TO ME.
Back in the mix, and Mano, aka Roberto Castillo, and I are on the rampage on tour each week.
We head down to states amongst various other local tournaments before, and out at Leslie
Wrestling Club Open, I see finally another friendly face from Lansing. It is a boy named Teddy
Treadwell. He has no coach, is not really awesome at wrestling, although still tough, but lacks the
support I feel.
I take Treadwell under my wing sort of, and let him know that each tournament that he is at, I
will be glad to coach him, and be in his corner. He is shocked; you can see the surprise in his face
to hear this and still wonder who the heck I am, and probably if I even WENT to Lansing Everett,
or know of his family, coaches there, etc. My philosophy of help had already been forged years
ago in this same vain by Coach Jerry Trainor and Ron Becker who would look out for ALL OF
US in the area. I pledge the same back in return on this day to this boy now too.
We head to states, and there is Treadwell again, surprised to see myself once more and willing to
help, he can not talk, just look at me for suggestions, tired and out of breath, his coach ends up
showing up the last round to coach him, and I step back, not my place to intervene, I don’t wish
to get anyone in trouble or upset, just to help. Treadwell gives me a glance after the match, as I
depart far matside into the stands, proud just to see he was OK. We don’t speak again for year.
The following year Treadwell, this still being Teddy, enters the National Qualifier for Freestyle
and Greco hosted by Holt Wrestling Club in Holt, Michigan, and is up a weight class competing.
I rush over to help coach him, the Johnson twins (Brandon and Bradley) from Grand Ledge, plus
Aaron Beers and Bobby, Matt Swab from Mason, and T.J. from Williamston. It is a proud day,
because even all these guys take time out to route each other on like a true team-mates. I am
chagrin.
Teddy goes on in life and I don’t typically see him too often, and then it happens: he approaches
with a new girlfriend a few years later and of course I KNOW HER. It is a girl named Kacee that
I use to coach soccer with back years ago in Lansing, and they are back around the wrestling once
more but to coach Teddy’s younger brother – Dawaun. I realize around these times who Dawaun
is, and decide before anyone else that I will take him under my wing now too, if he ever needs
me.
Enter MYWA to our scene, right around the time frame of 2002 or so, and by about 2006, I am
taking some teams down to the Ohio Tournament of Champions. I have the luxury of not only
knowing Teddy Treadwell’s mother, but having her in attendance on this weekend as her other
son Dawaun is competing. I approach to let her know that I am willing to work with him, and
provide any kind of coaching support he needs. She says only one thing “take him”, and so we
go!
Minutes turn into hours, weeks after this tournament I still catch this next generation of Treadwell
wrestlers with Dawaun back on the mat, in various other wrestling practices, etc. and I get to
work with him more and more. He is finally wrestling pretty good, learning, trying, applying, and
that is enough for me as I have been studying and training myself for more Freestyle and final
gravitation over to THE DARKSIDE, and GRECO.
Years going by, and Dawaun is one of the few that remain coming over for training where ever I
go, not all the time mind you, but sporadically at least; plus, at most tournaments, I still keep
catching him week after week, JUST like I use to catch his brother doing. I am proud, once again
chagrin to see this level of commitment, so I keep an watchful eye out for him whenever possible.
His about 2008 or so, and Dawaun is over training with me now – full time. Fully grown and
training year round in certain parts, I have him focusing on Freestyle, but with more of a Greco
focus to note. He takes to it, ENTIRELY, and because of such he forges ahead of most in his
upper body technique, along with throwing, not too much else, but those were enough to see true
promise!
MUSAW – Michigan Wrestling Federation’s State Finals approach, and we are there, Dawaun
actually going from not placing the year before, to now wrestling for first and second in Freestyle,
not what I wanted mind you, but wrestling against one of the MORSE boys! He loses a tough
battle, and is distraught. He can only cover his face in shame, as I set by his side. There will be
another day I vow, and by month end – THERE WAS.
Enter the end of May and we are now at USA Wrestling’s Central Regional Championships in
Columbus, Ohio, fitting for us, this is a reunion of sorts. It is the same place I first started
working with Dawaun during MYWA’s travel down for the Ohio Tournament of Champions.
But, what will Dawaun do on THIS day, years after the fact, after this grave loss at States I
wonder.
Throwing, rolling, and winning, that is what I can tell you that Dawaun did on this day at Central
Regionals. He was tough every second, and listened ACUTELY to every word I said as his
coach. Consequently, he made it to the finals but LOST when there. HOW did he still capture a
FIRST PLACE though at this tournament you may ask next? I could tell you no idea, but what it
was – was POINTS, a matter of adding such up which gave Dawaun the end lead, and the
CHAMPIONSHIP!
Should have capped off a glorious season then as a sophomore then with Dawaun and his
wrestling, and merely reflected on just how MUCH he had earned in merely one Freestyle and
Greco season, but that would not be it with this story. Dawaun found out that he had actually
qualified for NATIONALS at Fargo on this year because of his second and first place wins, and
now coach was about to get his first NATIONAL QUALIFIER TO ACTUALLY COMPETE AT
FARGO!
No money, and no ideas on just how to come up with such with mom out of work, Treadwell can
not face me. His parlays a message through mom via email, follow up by phone to let me know
that he would LOVE to go to Nationals, probably a DREAM to do such, but can not. There is no
money for such, very little hope to even raise such probably in time, to be fair. I am saddened. I
am about to lose another to this same reason from the previous year with Raymond Lemon.
Unable to speak, I write Dawaun’s mom back only saying one thing:
HE IS GOING …..to Nationals, whether I need to rob a BANK and drive him there MYSELF!
Not further is spoken, just prayers on my side, probably his, as I render the deposit online to
MUSAW in Dawaun’s name to reserve his spot, and surprisingly his mom/family find a way to
come up with the rest. This would be a day in history for himself first and foremost, but for the
Adult Extension also, as now we would have our first national competitor.
Winning was no longer a matter at hand, although Dawaun went 2-2 while down there in N.
Dakota for the Cadet/Junior Nationals for USA Wrestling. We were just proud of him to go, as
still two others did not end up making it “last minute”, so Dawaun was alone once more.
Graduating this year we celebrate him for having the commitment to have been both a success on
the mat with us, but also in school to now graduate, and possibly enter the U.S. Army as his next
career plan.
CONGRATS Dawaun, we love you man!
A SOLDIER’S SAFE RETURN HOME
S
peaking about the U.S. Army, not only do we have myself – Coach Shane as a newly found
Retiree, but the newest crops
of high school graduates that
have been found to want to
join and serve too. Enter
Mano’s eldest son below with
him and family – Leevon
Castillo, who entered the
Army a while back, graduated
Basic and A.I.T training, and
now working to complete his
first tour abroad in Kuwait!
CONGRATS!
For those that remember
Leevon, he was an Adult
Extension wrestling member
for years also, as Co-founder Mano (aka Roberto Castillo) helped Shane and Moudy Martinez,
first get the training program and team going.
Ironically, Leevon was not only a long
time member of the Adult Extension, but
also of Capital City Wrestling Club
where we FIRST taught him HOW to
wrestle! Seeing him grow over the years,
we see the same little boy we actually
see below with his brother Chaz, almost
IDENTICAL. And, I should know as I
had the pleasure of being Leevon’s first
computer instructor in ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL also!
(See above is Chaz Castillo, Leevon Castillo’s little brother)
Here are some more pix of the party, and various long time CCWC and Adult Extension members
equally in attendance on this day – Saturday, Jun 5, 2010 for Leevon’s quick leave back home
and welcome back party.
Congratulations, welcome back, and GODSPEED back out to help serve and support our country
Leevon! We will be praying once more for your safe return and mission success.
We miss you!
----------------------------------------------More upcoming everyone, so we’ll cut the blog short here this time, and pick such back up with
much more from this last week’s fight, graduations, and further wrestling action, WOPA!
Thanks!
