2017 HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Last Friday presented the BGS Junior School with some very warm conditions for the 2017 House Swimming
Carnival. The boys showed terrific house spirit and determination to take the water for over 150 events. After a
brief house meeting, the boys made their way down to the BGS pool singing war cries in full voice. The order
for the individual events was Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke and then Freestyle. It was brilliant to see
swimmers of all abilities give it their all to score valuable points for their house. After the individual events, the
boys took to the 25m Freestyle and Novelty Relays. The final events were the Division 1 relays and the All-Star
relay.
Crowther lead from start to finish, clinching their first House Swimming Sports in 16 years. Armstrong finished
just 24 points ahead of last year’s champions Rofe to finish second and third respectively. School (4th), Hancock
(5th) and Dixon (6th) boys swam hard all day and did their houses proud.
Despite it being a tough choice as all Houses demonstrated great House spirit, Armstrong House claimed the
House Spirit Award. Thank you to the parents who attended and supported their boys on the day. A huge thanks
must also go to the staff for ensuring the day ran so smoothly. Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to all of the boys
who were involved on the day. Every boy should be proud of their efforts last Friday. Congratulations to the
individual winners:

Year 6 Encouragement Award – Jacob Ellery

YEAR 5 & 6 APS SPORT – UNIFORM
We are very conscious about teaching the boys to be responsible for their own uniform and equipment. Please
note the following in regards to uniform/equipment for APS Competition and Training Days:
 Boys who forget any part of their uniform or required equipment will not participate in APS Sport or
Training on that day.
 If their uniform or equipment is brought to school later in the day, they still won’t be permitted to play.
 If there is a reason for the boy being unable to bring the uniform or equipment at the beginning of the
school day, please email their homeroom teacher in the morning. Boys will be permitted to play where
there are circumstances that meant they were unable to bring the uniform or equipment at the
beginning of the day.
APS DIVISION SWIMMING
Congratulations to the boys who represented Brighton Grammar at the APS Division Swimming Trials last
Wednesday. Further congratulations to James Tan who was selected to compete in the 11 Years 50m
Butterfly at the EMR Championships.
APS SPORT REPORTS – WEDNESDAY 1 MARCH
Swimming
It was the 1st of March, a hot and exciting day for all the boys in 5/6 as it was our first home swimming event.
We were up against Scotch College and Xavier. Just looking at their team we knew we had a
challenge. Races for the day included a 4x25m relay, medley relay and the all time favourite, The noodle
race!! This was a race when the boys needed to be sitting on a pool noodle and to swim 25 metres as fast as
possible! (no wonder it was the favourite!) Following that was another favourite race, with even more
noodles!!! This was a teamwork race where you needed to swim all 4 people, and each person had to have
at least 1 body part on the noodle at all times. After that race there was the pool buoy race, then we finished
off with the 4x50m race. Well it is no doubt that all the boys had an amazing time!

5A Cricket
On a warm first day of Autumn, BGS 5A returned to the Home of Cricket, Crowther Oval, to play against
Scotch College. BGS batted first. Cooper Broun and Luca Robinson opened the batting and faced some
strong bowling from Scotch in the first two overs. Gus Calder and Angus Roberts then got the score moving.
Gus retired on 6 and after 3 overs we were 1/11. Lachie Roberts hit a great four off his first ball and then
Charlie Wood joined him at the crease. Sam Fanning and Charlie then put on a solid 14 run partnership.
Hugh Hasker, Aiden Williams and Jem Spicer batted well and BGS finished with a score of 3/48 off 11 overs.
After a quick change over, Scotch began their run chase. The BGS bowlers were on fire early. Charlie Wood
and Gus Calder combined for a great run out and then Aiden Williams bowled a quicker ball that was smashed
to Charlie Wood who took a catch at point. Seb Glassel and Hugh Hasker bowled two fantastic maiden overs
in a row to put the pressure on Scotch. Sam Fanning entered the attack and got a wicket straight away.
Scotch required 16 runs to win off the last over which was to be bowled by Lachie Roberts. The highlight of
the day was Lachie Roberts being on a hat trick after Cooper Broun took a classic catch at square leg. He
didn’t get the hat trick, but it didn’t matter, as Scotch couldn’t get the runs and BGS got it’s second straight
win (by 12 runs). A big Thank you to Mr Turner for coaching and umpiring, and my Dad for scoring.
Batting - C. Wood (8), G. Calder (6), S. Fanning (6), L. Roberts (5),
Bowling – L. Roberts 2/3, C. Broun 1/1, A. Williams 1/2 and S. Fanning 1/6,
Fielding – C. Wood Catch & Run Out, C. Broun ‘Classic Catch’.

5B Red Cricket
After two weeks of cancelled games we finally got to play our second game of cricket this term. We set off
early, as our match was an hour away in Berwick against Haileybury. The bus ride was long and hot but, as
soon as we arrived the adrenaline kicked in. Our team bowled and fielded to the best of our abilities. We took
lots of wickets because of our star fielder Harry George! When it was time to bat, Fletcher Hall and Felix were
up first. Unfortunately we were not able to score any four’s or six’s but, we were able to score a lot of quick
singles. We ended the game with a convincing win but overall it was just another great game and team effort
from BGS.

Year 6 Table Tennis
This week the Year 6 Table Tennis team travelled to MSAC for our first away game this year. Luckily, the
temperature was only 32 degrees this week, so that we could play at last! We played against Melbourne
Grammar and Hailebury. We were amazed with the quality and number of tables in the facility. There were
30 tables! Most matches were close and overall we were pleased with our skills and to use some of our
techniques we practised in training. Best player was Thomas O’Leary
Year 5 Table Tennis
Everybody in the team played really well. We all had a great time and the skills we have recently been
practicing paid off. Out of around thirty games we only lost five. We certainly hope to play MGS again. Above
all it was a fun time. There is still room for improvement and I hope we can do even better next time. Everyone
had plenty of opportunity to play lots of games and exchange partners and gain new experience.
