A Christmas Fishing Yarn ‘Twas the night before Xmas & all through the bay, The fish were happy for the fishermen were away. The rods were hung in the garage with care In hope that the Jewfish would soon be there. All the fishos were nestled, snug in their beds, While visions of whoppers swam in their heads. All the boats in the slip were tied very tight, Settled at dock for a long summers’ night. When out in the river there arose such a clatter, I ran to the wharf to see what was the matter. When what to my wandering eyes should appear? But one giant splash, the biggest all year! A gleaming huge Jewie lit up the night, I just had to know how hard it could fight. Dashed back to the car and ran through the sod, Grabbed gaff, tackle box and my favourite rod. Tried Bushy’s & Starlos from big ones to small, Put on metals and bombers, he would not bite at all. When down in my box I saw something squirm, I reached down and grabbed a killer red worm. It barely hit the water and my line whipped tight. I set the hook and then on with the fight. The rod bent double, the drag made a roar, Fought it for hours, my muscles were sore. 30kg landed, I looked at the prize, But of course couldn’t keep it, you must realize…. Fishing’s a sport we can enjoy every day, So at Xmas “catch and release” is the ONLY way. As I released the fish - believe it you might He turned and said: “To the Greenwell Point Fishing Club Merry Christmas! And to all - a goodnight!” ROSCO 4 Greenwell Point Gazette - Volume 113 December 2015 Sunshine Street Ages 2 to 5 years 4447 3838 Culburra Beach Greenwell Point Service Centre OPEN 7 DAYS FROM 6:30 AM Phone 44471279 POST OFFICE PAY YOUR BILLS PHONES/ MOBILES/RECHARGE ELECTRICITY GAS INSURANCE AGENTS FOR MOST BANKS FUEL AND BOATING NEEDS GROCERIES FRUIT VEG FISHING GEAR PET PRODUCTS HARDWARE NSW LOTTERY AGENT HOME DELIVERIES AVAILABLE ALL NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES NEW EXTENDED HOURS Individualised early learning programme provided by University & Diploma trained staff. Oyster and dairy farmers collaborate to improve water quality A field day organised by Oceanwatch on behalf of oyster and farmers dairy attracted about 50 farmers, Local Land Services, media and politicians. Mal Brough, Special Minister for State and Minister for Defence praised the industries for working collaboratively. The two industries now have an appreciation of the challenges being faced when producing clean, green food. The day has given both industries a valuable opportunity to create relationships and lobby together on issues such as water conservation, natural resource management which benefit the whole community. A health river is a river rich in species, which has resilience to withstand natural impacts such as flood and drought. 5. Movers & Shakers The Greenwell Point Charities held their annual event on Saturday 31 October with a Halloween theme complete with witches, ghouls, ghosts and spiders. 94 participants dug deep to support Shoalhaven Shakers a local support group for Parkinson’s Disease and Stuart and Simone Mintrim as the latter has been struck down by the debilitating disease. The $5000 raised was split 50/50 between Simone and the group. Simone’s family enjoyed the night as did the various Halloween characters who dressed for the occasion. A superb smorgasbord of fine foods was shared by all who were spurred on by Andrew and Wendy Williamson as M/C and Trivial Pursuit co-ordinators to empty their pockets. Denise Johnson, Lee Simeon, Sue and Hans Toetfer, Sharon Leslie and assistants are to be congratulated on presenting a great nights entertainment supporting a worthy local cause. Denise and Co. wish to thank all who came and the various sponsors, restaurants and businesses in Greenwell Point and Nowra who contributed prizes and vouchers. For a small community The Point really looks after its own. Rosco. In 1980 I was fishing with 3 mates at Montague Island at the Narooma Convention. We had 3 yackas down in 24 fathoms on a hot balmy day, not a ripple on the water and not a breath of wind. Suddenly a roar like a steam train blasted from the north and the entire horizon erupted like a fast moving washing machine. Tsunami? No, it was a massive school of stripy tuna 3km wide being chased by crisscrossing fins of all shapes and sizes, marlin dolphins, wahoo, yellowfin and pilot whales. They breached as they smashed the fish in frenzy. Within a minute the wall of fish hit my 18 ft. cruise craft. The impact almost knocking us off our feet. Both rods went off with 2 big horse yellowfin screaming off line. We lost one but landed the biggest, a 60kg big torpedo after a 2 hour fight with an ugly stick, 600h Daiwa reel on 20kg mono. A local pro had sent the word out that the Japanese were paying top money for quality tuna, the reason for us being there. The fish was dispatched in the traditional way with a metal spike and iced down in the well of the boat. The pro met us at the wharf and the fish was taken on ice to Mel Gibson’s air strip on the hill above the Golf Club and flown to the Skidji fish markets in Tokyo. A week later, on the last week of our holiday the fisho gave me $2000 cash—6 months salary back then. This paid for 4 families accommodation plus costs for 3 weeks, a sizeable drink and feed that night and plenty in the cunning kick for next year. Rosco READY TO PUT YOUR HAND UP ON A NEW HOME? 7. Greenwell Point Gazette - Volume 113 December 2015 Members of the Greenwell Point Historical Society Greenwell Point Historical Society Update After a well-attended meeting in the Greenwell Point Public School Library on the 20th November 2015, the Greenwell Point Historical Society has a new committee. The old committee was made up of Mrs Doris Hoffman, Mrs Linda Wilson and the Late Jim Walliss. All were stalwarts in keeping the Historical Society going for many years, and put together over the years many informative photos, walks and a book (which is still available) on the History of Greenwell Point. The new committee comprises Margaret White, President, Julia Banyer, Secretary, and Karyn Knowles, Treasurer. This committee will be co-ordinating with Doris to make sure all the information that has been acquired is in the one place and accessible. All the members would like to give a vote of thanks to Doris and Linda, as well as to Marion Wallis for all the work that she and Jim contributed over the years. If you have any photos or stories of Greenwell Point that you might like to be included in the Historical Society displays please let us know, and we will take copies of them. That way you can still keep in your photos/stories with you. Old photos and stories are great, but history happens every day, so our records also welcome any ‘new’ history that is being made in Greenwell Point. In 100 years’ time todays photos and stories will be a part of the historical tapestry of the Point. We are also looking for a venue where we can display in a cabinet the many items for all to see. It would not take up a large space, but it needs to be in a position where people can view them easily. If you have any ideas please feel free to contact the Committee of the Historical Society. Anyone interested in contributing material or joining should contact Margaret White. The email address for Margaret is [email protected] and Julia is [email protected] 9. More than half of you thought is was a great idea. Two of you objected. Dogs need to be able to run, play and swim without being restrained by a leash. There are a couple of local dogs which do need to be on a leash but the rest of them are fine. I would like to remind you humans that you have the responsibility to pick up our poo. Some people do not appreciate that we need to keep all our parks and reserves clear of all rubbish including our deposits. The Council should be requested to provide poo bag dispensers as in other places we visit. I am looking forward to meeting visiting dogs and having fun this holiday season. Bruce WHAT ANNOYS YOU? If you are annoyed by anything in the village please write to the Editor and share with everyone. Here are a few reported gripes Barking dogs Dog poo on the reserves Lawn mowing & chain saws during lunch time Trees on neighbouring properties Loud music from neighbours Rubbish on the reserves Most of us do not like to complain. But talking to residents reveals a lot of frustration with issues which need to be resolved. There are solutions The Men’s Shed is raising funds for a new shed to be built in 2016. Discussions are continuing with Shoalhaven City Council which has been very supportive of the proposal to build a Men’s Shed at Greenwell Point. So far a number of donations have been made including contributions from well known identities. Details will be included in the next Gazette. Thanks to all who have generously contributed to the shed building appeal. ALL CONTRIBUTIONS WELCOME. Contact Bob Williamson on 0438268391 to discuss a tax deductible donation THANK YOU To the thoughtful residents who make the village a better place to live & visit. So many people contribute is their own special ways but it is often the small things which go without acknowledgement. Up until recently, Tony Gassman walked the streets & reserves each morning collecting rubbish. He received little or no thanks from anyone. He has now moved to Orange. The gazette has been told of a young couple from South St who now collect rubbish each morning. They have not responded to requests by The gazette for their names or other information. Like Tony, they obviously make their own quiet contribution without requiring an recognition. Ed 11.
