Exert a little peer pressure
Peer pressure. These
days, the term has
something of a negative
connotation.
We warn our children
about succumbing to
peer pressure to do
drugs, drink alcohol, and
myriad other things.
Scott Swango, MD
Springfield, Missouri
We encourage them to
“stand on their own two
feet”, not bowing to the
evil that is peer
pressure. We certainly
would like to think that
we ourselves are not
susceptible to peer
pressure.
John Anderson, MD
Kansas City, Missouri
However, is peer
pressure always bad?
John Krause, MD
St. Louis, Missouri
According to
dictionary.com, a peer is
a nobleman. Pressure is
a force applied by one
body to another body.
So in one sense, the
definition of peer
pressure sounds
suspiciously like a group
of nobles having a really
good time.

Alternatively, peer
pressure can mean
persuasion by one’s
equal to choose a certain
course of action. This is
the definition we’re
talking about.
MSOA President Jon
Grantham, M.D.
serves serves the
greater Joplin,
Missouri area at
Orthopaedic
Specialists of the
Four States, LLC.
Why all the talk about
peer pressure? When I
was just getting started
in practice, two of my
peers and mentors, Drs.
Lowry Jones and Charlie
Rhoades, introduced me
to the Missouri State
Orthopaedic Association.
At that time, I had no
idea how much MSOA did
on my behalf to enable
me to practice medicine
as I saw fit. Since then,
I’ve seen firsthand the
influence our leadership
has in both Jefferson
City and Washington,
D.C.
MSOA is a consistent and
respected voice on our
behalf.
Our specialty is currently
under attack from
multiple directions.
Insurance companies,
hospitals, allied health
organizations, and even
our own government
want to control our
ability to practice our
craft. I’m deeply
indebted to Drs. Jones
and Rhoades for allowing
me to get involved in the
fight, and as your new
president I’d like to offer
a little advice.
If one of your colleagues
isn’t a member of the
MSOA, exert a little peer
pressure. It isn’t always
a bad thing. After all,
our unity is our strength.

Attendees at the 42 Annual Meeting
of the Missouri State Orthopaedic
Association selected new officers and
approved 22 new members of the
association.
Jon Grantham, M.D. was elected
MSOA President. Dr. Grantham
recently completed two 3-year terms
on the AAOS Board of Councilors.
He serves the greater Joplin, Missouri
area at Orthopaedic Specialists of the
Four States, LLC. Other officers
include President Elect Dirk Alander,
M.D.; Treasurer Joel Jeffries, M.D.;
and Secretary Tom Reinsel, M.D.
MSOA attendees also welcomed
twenty-two new members to the
association. Membership recruitment
has been an important part of
MSOA’s growth in the last five years.
Our new members represent a 9%
increase in the total number of MSOA
members.
At a time when many orthopaedic
physicians, especially younger
physicians are choosing not to join
professional societies, we are excited
about MSOA’s newest members
including many orthopaedic residents.
Joplin-area physicians featured in AAOSNow
MSOA members Jon Grantham, M.D. and Michael Grillot, M.D. were featured in the
August edition of AAOSNow for their quick response and trauma care immediately
following the natural disaster in Joplin, Missouri. Joplin was struck by a tornado that
destroyed St. John’s Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Grantham helped evacuate patients from St. John’s. Dr. Grillot volunteered at a
hospital in nearby Carthage. “I specialize in hand and upper extremity surgery, so I
cared for patients with high energy, foreign body injuries to those areas,” said Dr.
Grillot. “One patient had cut his hand—I treated him in the hallway because no rooms
were available.”
