WELCOME
LOOKING FOR
THE USUAL AND UNUSUAL
[/]
“Herb Lester guides are really easy to
use and full of information . . . they are
really great!” Sir Paul Smith
Herb Lester Associates was started in
2010 by Jane Smillie and Ben Olins. We
both have backgrounds in media, having
worked in newspapers and TV networks.
We wanted Herb Lester to have a distinctive voice and to follow our own interests
rather than to respond to passing fashions.
Everything we include is there because we
like it and think our readers will too. Our
guides are independent – no one pays to
be in them, and there’s no advertising.
When we began writing and publishing guides, there were various books that
we used as inspiration, notably Denys
Parsons’ What’s Where In London and Sam
Lambert’s London Night And Day. These
books, published more than half a century ago, are informative, funny and
beautiful, and we still use them as the
benchmark for what a guide should be.
We’ve published more than 50 guides now
and continue to treat each new one as a
special case, choosing a designer and illustrator whose work we think particularly suits the project. We’ve worked with
some wonderful people, among them Jim
Datz, Matt Chase, Kelli Anderson, Brent
Couchman.
Our core product is a series of folding guides, which are all litho-printed in
England on 100% recycled paper. Small,
light and inexpensive, they are ideal companions for short trips – all you need for
a few days of sightseeing, shopping, eating and drinking. In our guides, we aim
to show the reader what makes a city
distinctive by shedding light on obscure
places, as well as, revisiting well-known
ones with a fresh perspective. We choose
shops and bars, restaurants and cafés, galleries and museums, parks and observation points – the sorts of places that make
locals happy to live where they do – and
help visitors see what makes them special.
In 2016 we expanded the idea of our
travel guides by publishing two books:
How To Get Out Of London Without Really
Trying and How To Find Old Los Angeles.
The larger format allowed us to go deeper
into a subject and to also use photography.
It’s something we’ll be doing more of in
future.
In addition to our guides and books,
we’ve made a selection of accessories:
tear-resistant luggage tags; notepads from
fictional hotels; mini menu translators;
playing cards with useful for phrases for
travellers. While travel is a part of all
these, they’re also a way for us to do something different – some products useful
(mini menu translators), others just fun
(hotel notepads).

An expanded and revised version of our guide How To Find Old LA, this book
delves deep into the City Of Angels’ best-preserved treasures – from a racetrack frequented by Charles Bukowski to old-time Hollywood hangouts.
Easy escapes from the big city using only public transport. Whether you’re in
need of a country ramble or a last-minute day trip to the seaside, temporarily
leaving the Big Smoke has never been easier.
Every one of the 153 carefully selected places in this book is open
to visitors. There are bars, delis, book stores, bowling alleys, and
burger joints, each of which retains the classic character of another era while being a vital part of the 21st-century city. To make
navigation clear, the chapters focus on different areas, and vivid
photography brings the entries to life. This is an essential guide
for anyone with an interest in 20th-century architecture and pop
culture, or a yearning to visit a more glamorous Los Angeles.
London’s mainline stations offer easy access to open country,
grand houses, historic castles, diverting museums, and glorious
beaches – and all within 90 minutes. This guide is ideal for spontaneous solo trips on sunny days, or to help plan days out during
half-term breaks. Casting our net from the city’s outer boroughs
to Essex, Kent, Sussex and beyond, our 100-plus entries include
a beach in landlocked Middlesex, Bexhill’s art deco wonder, The
De La Warr Pavilion, and fish and chips in Whitstable.

Small and tightly focused, our guides are concise city tours in a handy fold-out
format that slip neatly into an intrepid traveller’s pocket.
Our aim is to introduce readers to new places as well as re-evaluating familiar ones, and we are as keen to find a new way to
see the Louvre as we are to discover an untouched 1950s café.
Informed by on-the-ground research, our one-sheet guides and
maps uncover what makes a city special. They are written and
researched in-house, and an illustrator who has been specially
chosen for the subject designs each one.
Whether it’s an excursion into the greener areas of London
(which are more numerous than you might think), Paris’s
beatnik bookshops, the otherworldly landscape just outside
Reykjavik, or the watering holes of Brooklyn, we highlight what
makes a place distinctive with our specialist knowledge and
illustrations with vintage charm.
In A6 format, the guides fit easily into a pocket and then
expand out to A3 or A2 to display the attractions of each city.
Each fine-quality sheet is litho-printed in England on 100%
recycled stock.
AN EDINBURGH
COMPANION
PUNK LONDON
Punk had London roots. This 20-page booklet, featuring
rare archive photos and a fold-out (A6 to A3) map, charts
the squats, clubs, shops and rehearsal spaces from which
the movement emerged. It takes in Malcolm McLaren
and Vivienne Westwood’s King’s Road shop, The Clash’s
Chalk Farm rehearsal space, and more besides.
Scotland’s capital has appeal that
extends far beyond its elegant façade. Our updated guide documents
wanderings off the well-worn path
of the Royal Mile, charting bookshops and butchers, pubs and gardens. It uncovers the unexpected
and relishes the traditional.

A MANHATTAN BAR
FOR ALL REASONS
A BROOKLYN BAR
FOR ALL REASONS
For those who prefer to conduct
business away from prying eyes. An
intriguing list of 31 sites, including
neglected restaurants, unreconstructed wine bars, ancient pubs,
places with hidden alcoves and easy
exits, and even natural isolation.
A celebration of 100 independent
shops and businesses where global
fashions have taken root. This
guide spans time and boroughs
and includes a foreword by Sir Paul
Smith, whose first shop is featured.
This guide to 31 bars is for the connoisseur as well as the thirsty, taking in fancy bars and dives, bars
with views and bars with history,
bars to play bocce, and bars to get
into trouble. And, of course, there
are bars to forget those troubles too.
Thirty distinctive Brooklyn watering holes for any temper. This
guide features venues aplenty: a
saloon for beachcombers, one for
philosophers, a few for a good
old-fashioned shot and a beer, and
many more for cocktails of the
moment.

Our focus is on eating and carousing (with a few diversions). The 38
entries take in po’ boy sandwiches,
sazeracs, Creole food and a bar that
rotates a full 360 degrees every 15
minutes. As we say, good times!

OUT THERE: THE
SOLAR SYSTEM FOR
TOURISTS
Wanderlust taken to its extreme:
three imaginary grand tours of the
solar system. This guide combines
must-see spots from popular sci-fi
with fascinating facts. It’s ideal for
armchair adventurers.
HOW TO READ THE MENU
A set of three miniature phrase books
for the table
This set of Italian, French and Spanish phrase books is small and
discreet to avoid the embarrassment of taking out a huge book
in a restaurant. Each guide is the size of a credit card yet holds
enough information to help you navigate a tricky menu, and all
three booklets fit into a tri-fold wallet. Armed with these guides,
vegetarians can order without fear of unwittingly eating flesh and
hardened fans of offal will be able to identify every last chewy,
wobbly cut on the menu. These 24-page books, with entries listed
A–Z, are as discreet as they are useful – the next best thing to
having your own interpreter.

DISPLAY STAND
A pack of four labels
for air, rail, land, and sea
A home for 56 guides
Manufactured in the UK, using 3 mm clear,
damage-resistant acrylic, our custom-made
stands are created to withstand the wear
and tear of shop life. There are four pockets,
each of which comfortably holds 14 A6-sized
guides – a total of 56. The footprint is small:
approximately 26 cm wide and 11 cm deep,
with total height just under 24 cm.
Whether you’re heading for Malaga, Manhattan
or Margate this summer, it’s essential that your
luggage makes the journey with you. Printed on
almost indestructible Tyvek®, which looks like
paper but resists tears and water, the tags are
ideal for travel because they’re able to withstand
the rough and tumble of an aircraft hold, a wet
ferry crossing, or rain, sleet or snow. The four
tags come with elastic to make attaching to your
bags simple, with no knots needed.
Four pockets, each holds 14 A6 guides

TRAVELLER’S PLAYING
CARDS
A box set of eight notepads
from fictional hotels
A poker-sized deck featuring 54
useful phrases in three languages
These are just the sort of thing you’d find by the telephone
in most lodgings, from the grandest establishment to
a lowly fleapit: Kellerman’s Resort (Dirty Dancing); The
Empire Hotel (Vertigo); Bertram’s Hotel (At Bertram’s Hotel,
Agatha Christie); The Great Northern Hotel (Twin Peaks);
The Overlook Hotel (The Shining); Royal Imperial Windsor
Arms Hotel (National Lampoon’s European Vacation); The
Green Man Inn (The Wicker Man); The Taft Hotel (The
Graduate). These hotels are out of reach to all, no matter
their wealth. They exist only in the imaginations of their
creators, and now in these paper pads.
Our deck is suitable for any of the traditional uses – games, tricks, a solo round of patience – but each of
the 54 cards (four complete suits and two jokers) also
doubles as your own personal translator, sporting a commonly used English phrase along with its French and
Spanish equivalent.
Designed for us by Tom Froese, our playing cards
evoke an earlier, less-stressful era of travel but use
phrases handy for the 21st-century traveller: Where
can I charge my phone? Do you have wifi? Where’s the
nearest ATM? Do you mind if I take a photo? And for
those lucky enough to be fluent in English, French and
Spanish – well, who doesn’t like a round of rummy?
