Working to strengthen, support and advocate for the Ramsey County Library system in order to enrich the lives of our library users, to promote literacy and education, and to foster community. A N N UA L R E P O R T 2 01 3 Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries was formed in 1979 to advocate for and support public library services provided in suburban Ramsey County. The Friends is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with a governing board of directors, three part-time staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Since 1979, the Friends have provided funding for library equipment and materials including books, computers, a van, printers, fax machines, shelving, book carts, display cases, automated checkout machines, art, audio-visual equipment and furniture. Many programs and services at the libraries located in Maplewood, Mounds View, New Brighton, North Saint Paul, Roseville, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake would not have been possible without the financial support of Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries. The Friends have initiated, funded, enhanced, or expanded programs for all ages including the Summer Reading Program, Kindergarten Library Card Signup, adult computer classes, teen book clubs and special events, homework assistance, and training for job seekers. They have also made substantial additions to the collection of library books and materials. The Friends raised funds for capital campaigns for library construction or remodeling of the Ramsey County libraries in North St. Paul, Maplewood, Roseville, and New Brighton. This financial support comes from book sales, donations, memberships, and capital campaigns as well as volunteer time worth thousands of dollars each year. Members, donors and volunteers are always finding new ways to contribute their ideas, talents money and time. In 2011, the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries was certified by the Minnesota Charities Review Council as meeting all 27 standards covering Public Disclosure, Governance, Financial Activity, and Fundraising. Donors can be assured that their gifts will be managed in the most effective way for the benefit of users of the public libraries. 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries is the group that can pool the gifts of many donors and magnify the impact on the community. Individuals and organizations contribute to the Friends to ensure that the libraries remain places where anyone can find information, get help with technology and media, meet and talk with others who share their interests, and expand their skills in just about any subject. The mission of the Ramsey County Library is to provide free access for all to the knowledge and ideas that transform lives. The vision is to create extraordinary learning environments and experiences. The Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries provides financial and human resources that support that mission and vision. With the help of the public and the Friends, Ramsey County Library was able to provide free access to the following resources in 2013: Access to millions of ideas and resources. • 16,978 new patrons registered for library cards • 4,596,085 items checked out • 278,694 reference questions answered Programs and educational events that bring families and communities together. • 1,706,338 visits to the Ramsey County libraries • Library meeting rooms used by 1,848 external groups • 727 programs attended by 7,271 adults Computer classes that teach people new skills. • 207 free technology classes for 1,588 attendees • 232 one-on-one help labs for 1,116 participants Free internet access that offers equal opportunity to the economically disadvantaged seniors, and people with disabilities. • Library computers were used for Internet access for 322,445 hours • The Library’s web site was visited 2,015,851 times Employment resources that help people find jobs. • 6,508 online employment coaching sessions through JobNow • 32 workforce development classes attended by 211 job seekers • 24 business start-up counseling sessions for 61 new entrepreneurs Language learning resources that help new Americans to assimilate. • Conversation Circles in which people can practice their English are held at the libraries in Mounds View and Shoreview • Libraries offer free online ESL and foreign language instruction and translation resources 1 2013 YEAR IN REVIEW continued Early literacy resources and storytimes that help get children “school-ready.” • 1,760,216 children’s items were checked out • Children’s Librarians provided 567 storytime sessions with 29,047 attendance Educational programs to help children succeed in school. • 60,584 attended 1,146 children’s programs • 6,461 children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Program • More than 1,000 people participated in the Kindergarten Library Card Sign Up Celebration. Parents tell us how much they appreciate this incentive-based reading program that helps prevents learning loss over the summer. 6,461 children and teens registered for this program in 2013. In addition to major funding from the Friends, other donors of program support included the North Suburban Community Foundation, the Lillian Wright and C. Emil Berglund Foundation, the Water Park of America, Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA), the Minnesota State Fair, Culver’s, participants in the BookIt! 5K Walk/Run, and contributors to the Friends Annual Fund Drive. Reading Friends Although the public libraries are treasure troves of literacy-building resources for children, not every child is able to access them. This Friends’ program recruits, screens, trains, and places volunteers in targeted community settings to work with preschool and K-5 students. Through reading to groups of children or providing individual tutoring, these volunteers focus on helping build literacy skills and a love of reading. Sessions are held at locations in New Brighton, White Bear Lake, and Mounds View with all activities coordinated through Community Partners with Youth, Head Start, and Early Childhood and Family Education agencies. Kindergarten Signup Hosted by the Friends, this is an annual hit with the young crowd and their families. The 2013 Kindergarten Library Card Party was a smashing success with more than 900 children and adults participating. As a result of this outreach program, 1,200 kindergarten students received their library cards, 233 of them at the party on January 26th at the Roseville Library. Generous donations from the following sponsors made it possible for every child to take home two brand new books for their very own home library: Gold Level Sponsor – St. Paul Family Dentistry Silver Level Sponsor – Central Pediatrics/Priority Pediatrics Bronze Level Sponsor – Metropolitan State University At the event, families enjoyed live entertainment and a treasure hunt designed to highlight library services for the entire family. This celebration marks the culmination of a school visitation program where librarians encourage students, parents and teachers to visit the library. Information Literacy Access to information in the digital age remains an essential skill and, with support from the Friends, RCL offered 207 free technology classes with 1,588 attendees and 232 sessions of one-to-one computer help with 1,116 participants. Additional funding from Comcast Internet Essentials enabled the library to offer thirteen additional skill-building classes to help narrow the digital divide. 3 FEATURED EVENTS JANUARY 5TH GRAND OPENING OF THE SMART PLAY SPOT Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Children’s Museum of Minnesota which we matched through the generosity of our donors, new pre-literacy equipment was installed at RCL in Maplewood. These pieces may look like toys but they are teaching young children about the shapes and motions used for writing, to be aware of letters, the sounds of words and much more. Funding for this Smart Play Spot comes from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Children’s Museum, Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries, City of Maplewood, North Ramsey 500 Lions Club, Metropolitan State University, Maplewood Toyota, Maguire Agency, family of Joan & Vince Bartell, Maplewood North Lions, and Rachel Anderson. ART DEDICATION AT NEW BRIGHTON On March 8th, 30 people came to the New Brighton Library to enjoy a reception dedicating a wonderful new piece of art commissioned in memory of Phyllis Robertus. Textile and Fiber Artist, Mary Jo Scandin, was among the speakers that evening. 4 FRIENDS ANNUAL LUNCHEON A record crowd of book lovers gathered at the North Oaks Golf Club on April 27 to listen with rapture as William Kent Krueger entertained and educated the 175 guests at the Friends’ Annual Luncheon. Krueger started with childhood nursery tales and ended with his own poetry as he shared his literary history and his evolution into a “New York Times Best-Seller” mystery writer. Minnesota has been blessed to be the home of this outstanding author and speaker. We are very grateful for the sponsors who made this event possible---Dick and Mary Fowler, Cerenity Senior Care, and William Kent Krueger. MANITOU DAYS PARADE IN WHITE BEAR LAKE Once again, the Friends sponsored an entry in this parade in White Bear Lake that included a book cart drill team, our mascot Booker riding in a convertible, sign-bearers and volunteers to hand out treats and talk to the crowd. FALL PROGRAM The Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries hosted acclaimed Minnesota author and restaurateur, Brenda Langton, at the Roseville Library the evening of September 24. She is well known for her dedication to healthy, delicious eating in her Minneapolis restaurant, the Spoonriver Café, and through the Mill City Farmer’s Market, which she originated in 2006. 5 FRIENDS FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES BOOKIT 5K WALK/RUN A favorite of joggers and families alike, this scenic race course begins at the RCL Library in Roseville and runs through beautiful Roseville Central Park. Event proceeds benefit the Summer Reading Programs for children and teens at all seven Ramsey County Libraries. The BookIt! 5K Planning Committee includes staff from the Roseville School District, Roseville Parks and Recreation, Ramsey County Library, Friends of the Libraries, and tons of volunteers. Unfortunately, on May 18th, severe storms with lightening caused officials to cancel the event shortly before it was scheduled to begin to ensure public safety. Nevertheless, the participants and volunteers enjoyed the food, race t-shirts, and the knowledge they were helping the public libraries. Although the weather greatly reduced the number of people who registered for the race that morning, with the help from our sponsors, we were able to raise over $4,000 for the Summer Reading Program. Gold Level Sponsors Allina Health | Rosedale Center Silver Level Sponsor Falcon Heights-Lauderdale Lions Club Bronze Level Sponsors Roseville Visitors Association | Maguire Agency Frank Harris | Kim Bennett Agency | HealthPartners | Renewals by Andersen | Jaci Meyer Agency, State Farm SPECIAL BOOK SALES The Friends held two very large sales of used books which generated $12,542 during 2013. These special events require an enormous amount of planning and coordination. We are very grateful to Bonnie Bassett, Nancy Huberty, Janet Huberty, and Donna Andreas for organizing these sales and coordinating with library staff and with the many volunteers who made these events successful. 6 FRIENDS USED BOOK STORES Income from the Used Book Stores and from our online book sales added $60,724 to our revenues during 2013 confirming the value many folks find at the Maplewood, Roseville and Shoreview RCL branches that host our book stores, plus the book carts at the White Bear Lake and Mounds View branches. “Catch & Release” is a conservation program that helps provide a bounty of fish for anglers. “Read & Release” is our version of providing more books for avid readers! If you have gently-used books that are looking for a good home, please share them with us. Last year, donated books valued at $94,319 went right on the library shelves for patron checkout. Other donated materials are sold at our bookstores and book sales, raising funds for library services. Whether you are donating, shopping or volunteering at one of our book stores, you are helping your favorite library. RECYCLE USED CELL PHONES Beginning in March 2007 the Friends started collecting used cell phones and sending them to GRC Recycling in Miramar, Florida. They pay us for what they can use and dispose of the rest in an environmentally friendly manner so the phones do not end up in landfills. To date, this program has raised $4,847 which helps the Friends support library programs and services. LEAVE A LEGACY OF LITERACY On June 10 and 11, the Friends had a table at the Minnesota State Bar Association Probate and Trust Attorneys Conference at RiverCentre in Saint Paul. We received enthusiastic responses from many of the attorneys who heard our suggestion that they help their clients become the “next Andrew Carnegie” by including a gift to a library in their estate plans. 7 FINANCIAL SUMMARY Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries is a volunteer, non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. As we implement this new plan we expect to more fully develop the growing partnerships we have enjoyed with an expanding number of other community groups who see the opportunity to coordinate their mission with ours. We all want to improve the quality of life in our communities and quite often that can be done by enhancing programs and services offered at the library. For 2014, we plan to focus on these important areas: 1. BUILD FINANCIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL SECURITY Diversify and increase revenue sources Develop the organizational structure 2. ADVOCATE FOR LIBRARY SUPPORT Work with County Commissioners and Library Board Members Provide leadership for the White Bear Lake Library Capital Campaign Translate library goals into community impact 3. EXPAND FRIENDS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Increase visibility of the Friends mission and brand recognition Create effective communications in libraries and the community Partner with other organizations to provide resources for the library Maintain a minimum membership of 500 households 4. S UPPORT LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING IN DIVERSE COMMUNITIES Support library programs for all ages Support library technology programs for adults and teens Support library programs for underserved populations We are planning many events for 2014 and each one offers rewarding opportunities to volunteer with others who share your interests and desire to make our libraries stronger and more vital community resources for everyone.
