and political contexts that shape society and reflect global systems.
 Demonstrate knowledge of and be sensitive to others’ differing identities and
values across cultures.

of all education abroad participants in the state of Washington.
Over half of WSU study abroad students participate in Summer programs; less
abroad students participate in yearlong programs.
The number of Faculty-Led programs offered increased
2013-14.

In 2014 Washington State University joined Generation
Study Abroad, a national initiative to increase the number
of students learning abroad. This initiative aligns with
WSU’s strategic goal to graduate globally engaged
Cougs. Therefore, WSU has pledged to increase the
number of Cougs abroad from 700 to 1000 by 2019.
Note: WSU student data is from the Common Data Set for 2013-2014 available at http://ir.wsu.edu/Common%20Data%20Set.
National numbers are reported from the Institute of International Education’s 2013 Open Doors Report. Information is available at
http://iie.org/Research-and-Publications/Open-Doors. A physical copy of the IIE 2013 Open Doors Report is kept on file in the Office of International
Program-Global Learning Department. Statistics are reported in a manner so as to stay consistent with Open Doors reporting when possible.
*We use the Forum on Education Abroad’s definition of Education Abroad: “education that occurs outside the participant’s home country. Besides study
abroad, examples include such international experiences as work, volunteering, non-credit internships and directed travel, as long as these programs
are driven to a significant degree by learning goals.”
**Study abroad is defined as “the act of a student pursuing for credit educational opportunities in a country other than one’s own.” This also includes
currently enrolled WSU international students pursuing for credit education opportunities in their country of origin. Study Abroad is identified as a subset
of Education Abroad.

Study Abroad Breakdown by College and Major
The following is a breakdown of education abroad participation by college and major*.
If a student is completing a double major in separate colleges, each major is included in the totals below to
accurately reflect major distributions across multiple colleges. Due to this fact, the total number of majors is
greater than the total number of students who participated in study abroad for the 2013-14 Academic
Year. Degrees administered by schools which exist within multiple colleges are only reported under one
college based upon Office of International Programs-Global Learning Department advising structures. All
campuses are included in college numbers.
*Note: Numbers are based on students self-reporting their major at the time of application.

Global Learning Participation
“At Home”
Global Case Competition
Spring 2014 saw the 4th annual Global Case Competition where 93 students on 17 teams came together to
come up with innovative solutions to world problems. The topic for this year was arsenic poisoning in
Bangladesh. In order to be considered eligible a team must be comprised of 4-6 students and have at least 2
undergraduate and 2 graduate students, 1 international student, representation from 2 different colleges at
WSU, and representation from at least 2 WSU campuses. The following is a breakdown of this year’s
participants:
Global Leadership Certificate
Thirteen students were actively pursuing the Global Leadership Certificate (GLC) in 2013-14; 8 completed the
GLC. Since the creation of the GLC in 2012, 15 GLCs have been awarded, 53% of which were awarded in the
last academic year.
20
Global Studies Minor
51 students were working towards their Global Studies Minor (GSM) during the Academic Year 2013-14; 17
completed the minor. To date 111 WSU students have completed their GSM since 2005.
Global Learning Peer Advisor
Since 2003, returned education abroad participants have contributed to the development of the Peer Advisor
program and have demonstrated the value of the education abroad experience to the WSU community. Peer
Advisors are an integral part of the Global Learning Department and play a vital role in achieving the mission of
the Office of International Programs. 18 students participated in the Peer Advisor program during the 2013-14
Academic Year.
Global Learning Ambassador
54 Global Learning Ambassadors served as a resource to students interested in education abroad by fielding
questions about their experiences abroad during the Academic Year 2013-14.
