WOF RLD WONDER ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grades All children entering 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in the fall of 2016 are eligible for World of Wonder. The selection procedure is intended to be inclusive, not exclusive, and the guidelines have been established as an aid for parents and teachers in deciding if students should apply. In determining eligibility, WOW staff consider these questions: “Will this student benefit from the classes offered?” and “Is this student described by the following definition of gifted and talented children?” PROGRAM The World of Wonder is a series of one week summer programs designed to provide a variety of learning options for gifted students. It begins with a family orientation on Saturday, followed by classes Monday through Friday. Participants may choose to take one, two, or three classes, or they may spend the whole day with us by registering for our end-of-day recreation option. Recreation provides students with structured supervision after classes and allows families to pick them up after 5 pm. Students who spend the day bring their own lunches. WOW faculty is comprised of a talented group of individuals from area pre-K-12 public and private schools, as well as from the Bradley University teacher education faculty. WOW student aides are an enthusiastic group of Bradley University students who choose to work with the program by helping participants in between classes, assisting in their classrooms, and providing recreational activities. HISTORY Gifted and talented children are those children whose mental development is accelerated beyond the average or who have demonstrated a specific aptitude or talent. They have demonstrated exceptional ability in academic subjects, high level thought processes, divergent thinking, or creativity. Children who are gifted or talented may display some or all of the following traits: learn easily, show initiative, enjoy learning, work independently, offer unusual insights, develop many interests, communicate effectively, or solve problems creatively. ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: 4th – 8th Grades Students entering 4th-8th grade in the fall of 2016 must fulfill one of the following criteria: • Enrollment in a gifted or talented program within the current academic year. • Achievement test score of one grade level above current grade level, according to national norms. • IQ score of 120 or above. • Exemplary classroom performance as indicated by the most recent report card and a recommendation from a teacher or principal. A student who does not meet any of the guidelines should submit an application form. We will review the application and determine if the student will benefit from participation. Home schoolers may submit an essay detailing why they would like to attend. Since 1983, the Bradley University Institute for Gifted and Talented Youth and its predecessor, the Peoria County Foreign Language Immersion Program, has offered summer educational opportunities for Central Illinois youth. The Institute’s summer program, World of Wonder (WOW), features a broad array of one-week classes which enables first through eighth grade students to explore and expand their interests and abilities in a university environment. Now in its 33rd year, World of Wonder remains a high quality, thriving program for area youth. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to assist with tuition for families who qualify for free or reduced price school meals. For a scholarship application, please call (309) 677-2374, or visit our website at bradley.edu/wow. Due to limited resources, we may not be able to grant a scholarship to every child. 2016 WOW.indd 1 1 1 2/15/2016 3:09:46 PM CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADE 1 IN FALL 2016 SESSION 1 SESSION 2 8:00 AM 1101 Eric Carle Creations 2101 Numbers in Nature 10:15 AM 1102 Discovering Dinosaurs 2102 Train Your Own Dragon 1:30 PM 1103 WOW Toy Invention Lab 2103 Go Mo! JUNE 20-24 AUGUST 1-5 GRADE 1 1101 Eric Carle Creations (Jen Bernitt) Hurry on in, budding authors, artists, and illustrators, for a week-long exploration (with hands-on activities) of your favorite Eric Carle books, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will make manipulative ladybug clocks with The Grouchy Ladybug and pancake recipe cards with Pancakes, Pancakes (and maybe even try a pancake or two). Learning and creating Eric Carle’s tissue paper collage technique will be the main focus for this class as we design selfpainted tissue papers to illustrate our very own book. We all want to illustrate like Eric Carle! 1102 Discovering Dinosaurs (Lori Rowe) Are you fascinated by dinosaurs? Do you want to learn all about how they once lived? If so, this is the class for you! We will explore the different dinosaur characters from the movie The Land Before Time and learn how they were alike and different. We will dig in deep to investigate what they ate, how they moved, what the land looked like all those years ago, and much, much more. You never know; you may just become a dinosaur expert! 1103 WOW Toy Invention Lab (Lori Rowe) Have you ever wondered when your favorite toys were created? Who thought of them? Which toys came first? Which is older: a yo-yo or an iPad? In this class you will learn all about the invention of items we use in our daily life. We will have many discussions about what life was like before many common items were invented, then we’ll create something new to invent. Together, we’ll learn about the process of inventing something new and how it ends up in the stores. This class will open up our minds to all kinds of new thoughts about the objects around us. 2101 Numbers in Nature (Julie Gianessi) Numbers and patterns in nature are all around us, from mountain ranges to a head of garlic to a nautilus shell. If you look carefully, you will begin to see them more often. From a sea of repetition to symmetry, we will explore naturally occurring mathematical number patterns. Join us this week for hands-on math highlighting the world around us. 2102 Train Your Own Dragon (Julie Gianessi) Calling all boys and girls from the Isle of Berk (or Central Illinois)! What is the first step in training a dragon? Catching one, of course! You will need to be thoughtful, patient, and creative to construct a trap. We will also try a hand at using a catapult and archery, and exploring prosthetics like the one Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III made for Toothless. 2103 Go Mo! (Molly Damotte) Join us this week as we dive into the wonderful mind of Mo Willems, an amazing children’s author and illustrator who started his career as a writer and animator for Sesame Street. We will read, write, create, and play with many of his awesome creations from his award-winning books, including Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale. 2 2016 WOW.indd 2 2/15/2016 3:09:46 PM CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 2-3 IN FALL 2016 SESSION 1 SESSION 2 1201 Wildlife Rescuers 1202 LEGO® Explosion 1203 The Sweet History of Chocolate 1204 Road Trip 1205 Math Olympics 1206 Mythical Creatures 2201 Ahoy, Pirates! 2202 “If I Were Only One Inch Tall” 2203 Science of Speed 2204 Hear Ye, Hear Ye! 2205 Says Who? 2206 Summer Fun Around the World 2207 Create Your Own Superhero Comic 2208 Deep Sea Challenge 2209 Wacky Weather JUNE 20-24 8:00 AM 10:15 AM 1:30 PM 1207 Science in Your Backyard 1208 I’ve Got Goosebumps 1209 It’s a Time Warp! GRADES 2-3 1201 Wildlife Rescuers (Heather Rice) Here’s your chance to learn all about wild animals across the globe! In this class, we will explore different animals and what is harming and helping them as they live in their habitats. We will learn what actions we need to take to save these animals so that they don’t become endangered or extinct. Throughout the week we will learn about animals that live in the deserts, grasslands, mountains, oceans, rainforests, wetlands, and forests. It should be a wild experience! 1202 LEGO® Explosion (Connie Stromberger) What could possibly be more fun than building with LEGOs®? Well, building with LEGOs® surrounded by other cool girls and boys, of course! In LEGO® Explosion, we will explore concepts found in physics, engineering, art, math, and more. There are no kits or instructions to follow this week, just an explosion of random LEGOs® sitting on the table waiting for you to turn them into something amazing. (Parents, shhhh! Don’t tell your student that they’ll be giving their brain a workout because we want them to feel like they are just having fun). Each day will include “free create” time when the students can dive into the big pile of LEGOs® and let their imaginations run wild. We will also spend much of each class working on one or more challenges. Anyone up for a speed build? Who can construct the world’s best zoo? How about a boat that actually floats? Whatever the activity is, it is sure to encourage problem-solving skills and creativity. Materials provided, but cannot be removed from class. AUGUST 1-5 MORE CLASSES NEXT PAGE 1203 The Sweet History of Chocolate (Julie Gianessi) The mere mention of chocolate conjures up thoughts of hot chocolate on a cold day, fresh-baked brownies and cookies, and delicious candy bars. We will use all our senses to look back at how this delicious sweet treat evolved from the Mayans to the Americans. Was Forrest Gump right: is life “like a box of chocolates - you never know what you’re going to get?” Let’s put our skills to the test during our week- long look at chocolate. Parents, please be aware that we will be sampling food that contains dairy and nuts; if your child has allergies, you may want to choose a different class for this hour. 1204 Road Trip (Heather Rice) Are you ready for a coast-to-coast adventure? In this class, we will take a road trip across the United States. We will start our travel expedition on the east coast and head west, stopping in different states on the way to explore the attractions and landmarks our beautiful country has to offer. We will explore the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge and much, much more. Pack your bags for the best road trip this summer! 1205 Math Olympics (Molly Damotte) On your mark, get set, go! We are taking off into a week filled with amazing math competitions. Use your math skills and love for numbers to earn medals individually and with a group. Come prepared to run, sweat, and expand your brain with math knowledge. 1206 Mythical Creatures (Julie Gianessi) Dragons, mermaids, unicorns, Cyclops, and a kraken. How did these mythical creatures endure throughout time? What made people believe they had actually caught a glimpse of one of these creatures? Was there any scientific reason for “spotting” them? After our investigations, we’ll get to develop our very own creatures. What will your creature look like? Get ready to be creative this week while exploring mythical creatures! 1207 Science in Your Backyard (Taylor Boyne) Science is all around us - even when you step outside your backdoor! During this interactive class, you will have the opportunity to take your learning outside and engage in many experiments that will help you understand why the world is the way it is. We will take our learning from the soil of the Earth (by growing plants) all the way up to the sky (as we learn about weather). Get excited to learn about the science that is happening right outside your door! 1208 I’ve Got Goosebumps (Rachel Smith) Enter if you dare! Using literature from R.L. Stein’s Goosebumps series, this class will tap into our desire to read scary stories, explore the story structure, and develop critical thinking skills. Over the course of the week, we will learn what elements make Goosebumps so scary, and use those elements to write our own scary stories! MORE CLASSES NEXT PAGE... 3 2016 WOW.indd 3 2/15/2016 3:09:46 PM CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 2-3 IN FALL 2016 GRADES 2-3 CONTINUED 1209 It’s a Time Warp! (Christy Gardner) Get ready to time warp through United States history with the gang from Time Warp Trio, while meeting famous people along the way who shaped our history. We will visit Boston in Revolutionary Times, join Louis and Clark on their expeditionary travels, visit Buffalo Bill’s old west, learn to fly with the Wright Brothers, and see the stars with the 1960s space explorers. What a week we’ll have, warping through history! 2201 Ahoy, Pirates! (Chris Mangold) Did you ever wonder what it would be like to sail the ocean and look for buried treasure? Who made the rules for those people who spent more time on the water than on the land? What was it like to live your life on a ship? During this fun-filled week, our class will explore both facts and fiction about male and female pirates from the past, explore myths and truths about some of the more “colorful” characters in story and song, and create our own ships and crews. Yo, ho, ho! 2202 “If I Were Only One Inch Tall” (Carolyn Sutton) If you were only one inch tall, what would you think is small? If your ice cream had five flavors, in what order would you favor? If a triangle whispered to a square, what would he say over there? During this class, we will travel into the magical world of beloved author Shel Silverstein, using his time-honored poems and math to find the answer to these questions and more. 2203 Science of Speed (Christine Hill) Ladies and gentlemen…start your engines! This class is all about the science of speed, and we will explore what makes things go fast and faster. Get ready to build your very own cars while you attempt to engineer them to go faster and farther than before! 2204 Hear Ye, Hear Ye! (Chris Mangold) Welcome, lords and ladies! Please join our court for an elegant week exploring the life and times of the Middle Ages. Find out what it was like growing up in the part of the world that would someday become Europe. How was a king chosen? How were battles fought? What roles did girls and women play? How did life differ throughout Europe? We will have “jolly good fun” as each student is knighted, creates works of art and music, and looks at some of the writings and tales of medieval Europe. 2205 Says Who? (Carolyn Sutton) This class is all about point of view. Who is telling the story, and how does the story change? Students will re-tell classic stories from a new angle and new point of view, such as examining earthlings from an alien point of view to create a guide for visitors. You’ll get to be narrators, storytellers, and characters for all sorts of stories this week! 2206 Summer Fun around the World (Molly Damotte) Have you ever wondered how kids from other countries spend their summer vacations? Well, this is the class to find out! We will travel to a new destination every day and discover different games, foods, and crafts. Come prepared to learn about a lot of different cultures and have a blast together all week! 2207 Create Your Own Superhero Comic (Christy Gardner) Calling all superheroes! We need your help to save the day. Come and join us to learn what it takes to be your favorite superhero, or create your own. We will be reading and writing our own superhero comics and solving problems along the way in order to save the day! 2208 Deep Sea Challenge (Kathy Puterbaugh) In this class, you will become a deep sea explorer! You’ll learn about the oceans of the world, the mysterious creatures of the deep, and the different zones of the oceans. In addition, you’ll be amazed by our discovery of fun facts about the oceans and their deepest, most secret parts. 2209 Wacky Weather (TJ Klockenga) Thundersnow, frogs coming down like hailstones, spring-like temperatures in December, oh my! If you’ve ever pondered these wacky weather phenomena or others, then this class is for you! Learners will investigate the intricacies and conundrums that make up our current weather patterns, and how humans could affect weather in the future. 4 2016 WOW.indd 4 2/15/2016 3:09:46 PM CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 4-5 IN FALL 2016 SESSION 1 SESSION 2 8:00 AM 1401 “May the Force Be with You” 1402 Mathletes 2401 Space Art 2402 Optical Illusions: The Magic of Neuroscience! 10:15 AM 1403 LEGO® Lab 1404 Creative Writing Center 2403 Archaeology for Beginners 2404 Tell the Truth… History 1:30 PM 1405 WOW Shark Tank 1406 Rube & You 2405 Frank Lloyd Wright is all Wright! 2406 Lights, Camera, Action! We will look at and talk about space images, think about how the images are used, and create our own space art imaging using many different media. You will think of outer space in a whole new way after this class! 2402 Optical Illusions: The Magic of Neuroscience! (Heidi Dowell) Do you ever wonder how Houdini or Criss Angel perform those death-defying acts? Does magic amaze you? Do you want to mystify your friends and family? We will learn how neuroscience affects our brain and learn some pretty cool magic tricks along the way! We will even be visited by a magician during the week! Don’t blink! You might miss this awesome class! If you are interested in being an historical detective, then this is the class for you. We will explore the truth behind many significant historical events, then determine how the legends began, and why we don’t remember the true events! Architecture is awesome! Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most innovative architects of the 1900s. He was inspired by geometric shapes and nature. We will investigate his architecture, work with some of his favorite designs and materials, and live for a week, Frank Lloyd Wright style! 2406 Lights, Camera, Action! (Christine Hill) Have you seen any of the Foundation for a Better Life commercials? Those ads were developed to promote positive character traits in youth and adults. In this class, we will write, produce, practice, and perform our very own positive character trait commercials. Bring your creative mind, and be ready for a week of fun as we develop our very own commercials! 5 2016 WOW.indd 5 2/15/2016 3:09:47 PM CLASSES FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 6-8 IN FALL 2016 SESSION 1 SESSION 2 8:00 AM 1601 In Search of Shakespeare 2601 The 58th Quadrennial U.S. Presidential Election 10:15 AM 1602 Myth: Busted? 2602 Perspective Drawing 1:30 PM 1603 Astronomy: A Guide to the Cosmos 2603 Cryptology and Code-Breaking JUNE 20-24 AUGUST 1-5 GRADES 6, 7, 8 1601 In Search of Shakespeare (Rachel Smith) Many people assume William Shakespeare’s writing is not applicable today. But Shakespeare has had a substantial impact on each and every one of us … even you! That’s right, you already know many of Shakespeare’s stories! This class will explain how many works of Shakespeare have been borrowed by Walt Disney and incorporated into dozens of storylines and scripts from modern movies! 1602 Myth: Busted? (Kara Girsch) Can one truly find a needle in a haystack? If water drips on your head long enough, will it drive you mad? In this class, learners will test some rather perplexing situations to evaluate whether or not myths prevail. 1603 Astronomy: A Guide to the Cosmos (Chris Vergatos) Ever look up in the sky and think about what’s really out in space? In this class, we’ll explore some of the mysteries in our solar system, galaxy, and universe! Measuring the brightness of a star, constructing a replica of the solar system, and unraveling the mystery of black holes are just a handful of what we’ll be covering over the course of the week. 2601 The 58th Quadrennial U.S. Presidential Election (Jon Neidy) What if the voting age was lowered to 11? In this class, we will imagine it has and answer these questions: Who are the candidates? What are the issues? How are the candidates trying to win the election? How do they actually win? Who do you think should win the election? We will conclude the class with a mock election. 2602 Perspective Drawing (Judy Placko) In this class you will work with aerial (or, Leonardo da Vinci called it, “atmospheric perspective”), one-point perspective (as developed in the early Italian Renaissance), and two-point linear perspective (which is used more today). You will be so impressed with your drawings ... your two-dimensional drawings will look more three-dimensional! You will enjoy using your new drawing abilities for school projects or just for fun! 2603 Cryptology and Code-Breaking (Kara Girsch) Once upon a time, the entire world was at war. Sending information through codes was crucial for keeping secrets for both sides involved. With hard work and dedication, the enemies’ codes were broken, and the United States, using a code based on the language of the Navajo tribe that was never broken, helped win the war. Codes don’t just appear during times of war, however. They surround us in everyday life; an abbreviation we use when we text each other is just one great example. If you have a knack for words, a creative mind, and a need to communicate in secret (or to find out other people’s secrets), this is the class for you. 6 2016 WOW.indd 6 2/15/2016 3:09:47 PM APPLICATION ONLINE REGISTRATION WOF RLD WONDER Please go to bradley.edu/wow The application below is only for mail and walk in registrants. 1. ORIENTATION We will provide an orientation the Saturday prior to each session. Families and students will have the opportunity to meet instructors and staff, confirm pick up and drop off location, visit classrooms, ask questions, eat cookies, and drink lemonade. Orientation information is provided with your class confirmation. Orientation for each session is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on the dates listed above. Families need to attend only one orientation. LUNCHES Students who are spending the day with us should bring a sack lunch. Refrigeration is not available. RECREATION Students who register for recreation will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities each day. Recreation activities will change daily and will range from leisurely to active. For example, a student may choose to play tag one day and chess the next. FEES The cost is $99 per class and $29 for a week of recreation. MEMENTOS Participants will receive participation certificates, t-shirts, and a class photo. CLASS CONFIRMATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, AND CANCELLATIONS Families will receive confirmation of the child’s class registration at the earliest possible date. Information on parking, drop off/pick up locations, and a map of the Bradley University campus will be listed on the back of the confirmation. Class assignments are based on the order in which applications are received. When a student’s first choice cannot be honored because the class is full, the second choice will be substituted. World of Wonder will not cancel any classes this summer. All student cancellations will be assessed a $15 fee. Partial refunds will not be given after the date listed on this page. STUDENT BEHAVIOR We believe students learn best in an atmosphere of respect for the teacher and each other. Students who choose to behave in ways that interfere with other students’ opportunities to learn and/or the instructors’ opportunities to teach, forfeit their own opportunity to participate. Family support and cooperation in this matter is appreciated. We reserve the right to dismiss students from class for such reasons. In these cases, no refunds will be given.
