SO LONG… FAREWELL
HODGSON will bid a fond farewell to several members of staff this summer. We want to thank them for all their hard work and
wish them all the very best for the future.
DATA Officer
Miss Wilson
ASSISTANT Headteacher
Mrs Birchall,
“I would like to thank everyone
for a great 2 years at Hodgson. It has been
a pleasure to work with amazing staff and
students. It was strange at first working
alongside teachers who taught me, but I soon
settled in and realised what a privilege to have
been taught by the best!”
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hodgson School. I have
had amazing opportunities to work with staff and students and particularly
loved working with so many of the student council. I cannot thank you
all enough for the support and encouragement you have provided me
during my short time at Hodgson. Even though I will miss colleagues
and students, I am looking forward to a new and very different challenge
in this new phase of my career. Thank you to all who have continually
supported me; I wish every student and member of staff, continued
amazing success.
TEACHER of Science
Mrs Waller
Having worked at Hodgson for the past ten years I am really going to miss the staff and students here when I move to Millfield in September. I have made
some great friends and seen some amazing students pass through Hodgson and my current classes are showing great potential too – I will look forward to hearing
how they go on during the remainder of their time here. Special goodbyes must go to my form 11A – I can’t wait to come back for their prom next May and see
them all grown up in their dresses and suits. I am sure Miss Bagshaw will do a great job with them for the remainder of their time here.
It is also going to be hard leaving the science department and all of the teachers in it but especially Miss Parkinson, Mr Hough and Mr Meddings, our
fantastic technicians, who have saved the day for me on too many occasions to mention. Thanks to everyone who has made my years here so memorable and
enjoyable – I will miss you all.
ASSISTANT Lead Teacher of Mathematics
Mr Choudhury
It’s been a fun filled four years that I’ve been here, at this ‘Outstanding’ school and it’s been ‘Awesome’! I’ve learnt a lot from Hodgson and met some very
interesting people; staff as well as students. I’ve been shown unbelievable kindness and also at times made to feel like a school boy again(you know who you are:
Mrs R!) I’ll really miss my tutor group - yes even you Conner! I’m very disappointed that I’ll not see such a lovely group through to the end of Year 11. (I don’t care
what the others say: I think you’re fab!) I hope you all keep in touch. At least I can be proud of the fact that the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl will have come
from 11C! Well done you lot!
Remember:
“How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong.
Because some day in life you will have been all of these.”

Until we meet again!
How fortunate I am having worked at Hodgson and how
lucky I am to have, something that makes saying goodbye so hard. I
will miss you all particularly the students.
Ms Anderson
COVER Supervisor
Mrs Ferguson
I’d like to say a BIG thank you to
everyone (staff and students). It’s been a
great year that has gone unbelievably quickly.
I’m looking forward to starting my PGCE in
September and feel well prepared.
TEACHER of History
Mr East
“ I would just like to say a huge thanks to students, staff,
parents and all of the top notch friends I have made at Hodgson over
the past six or seven years. I am off to the wild and windswept north
of the county to continue to get students excited about history. I hope
you are all happy, safe and successful in whatever you do and a special
shout out to my year group who have made my work so eventful yet
rewarding. Maybe the grey hair will turn back to brown now!!!!”
ASSISTANT Lead Teacher of Design Technology
Mr Bergon
It has been a priviledge to work in hodgson school for the last five years.
I am glad I have been given the chance to be part of the Hodgson family. I have met
some wonderful people in my time at Hodgson, staff as well as pupils which I will miss.
I have found the Hodgson experience very valuable, it has allowed me to grow as a
person as well as a teacher, therefore I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
the people that have worked along side me and that have supported me in my job.
Pour finir je souhaite bonne chance à tout le monde à Hodgson en espérant
vous revoir bientot.

PROM NIGHT 2010
On Friday May 21st our year 11 leavers,
“the class of 2010” had an amazing prom at the
Hilton Hotel.
Amongst many highlights during the
evening was the announcement of Prom King
and Queen by the Master of Ceremonies, Mr
Yarwood.
The audience held it’s breath as the
winners of the vote were announced. Prom
King, Dominic Winston!! Prom Queen, Marissa
Redshaw!!
An emotional evening was had by all!
The Prom was preceded by our annual
Graduation Leavers Assembly on thursday 20th
May. Our guest speaker this year was former
student , Nicola Corsby, who is now training to
be a physics teacher.
17 students took part in a ‘Bikeability Day’ at Hodgson.
This is a new initiative and classed as the new cycling proficiency
test. Students brought in their bikes for the day and three instructors
showed them how to adjust their helmets to fit properly, how to
check the safety of all the components of the bike and make sure they
were roadworthy.
They were then instructed on handling of the bikes and road
safety tips. The second part of the course involved them going out of
school on busy roads and learning how to manoeuvre safely, handle
busy junctions, change position and adjust their speed accordingly.
The students thoroughly enjoyed this strenuous but worthwhile day
and all passed the course with flying colours. Well done!
WELL DONE DANIEL
BIKEABILITY COURSE
A Big Thank You!!
Thank you to all those who collected TESCO vouchers for the school. As a school we collected 3457
vouchers which we can add to the 6110 vouchers that we banked last year.
We have now purchased 2 Flip cameras and a tripod which are to be used across the school as well as
some badminton racquets for the PE Department.
Thank you all once again!
Mr Lamoury
Wyre Estuary
Daniel Moore 11C achieved a distinction in
Grade 8 euphonium playing (Associated Board of the
Royal School of Music). When you consider that Grade
8 is the highest possible grade that can be taken and
that Daniel cleared the distinction boundary by some
distance, this is an amazing result. He is also set to
achieve the highest GCSE music result the school has
ever seen, WELL DONE DANIEL!
Hodgson Highlight
On Saturday June 5th, a group of Hodgson students met at the Wyre Estuary Country Park
at Stanah to help to open a new Family Trail. The students had carved wooden trail markers with
information about different trees in the area and created a family quiz leaflet for visitors to the
Country Park. On the Saturday, the Mayor opened the Family Trail as part of local Environment
Week celebrations. The students who had carved the posts were Alex Tootill, Rebecca Grayston,
Gemma Collins, James Lees, Josh Swales and Kirsten Pal.

Hodgson School Boom Radio
Thanks to all those year 9 students who applied to become part of the Rock
FM project back in March, sadly not all students could go forward and so Mr Yarwood,
Miss Sweeney, Mr Cooke and Mr Lamoury interviewed the shortlisted candidates and
then announced the names of those who received a place- 96 students applied for the
positions and the competition was tough. Mr Yarwood commented saying the students
showed a “mature attitude, undoubted talent and enthusiastic approach to this new
venture.” The students were amazing!

Racing To Sustainable
Transport System
Year 7 and 9 got a day off
timetable to take part in a discovery
day which focused on the future
and the importance of an ecofriendly transport systems. The day
was organised by Mrs Gilbert, Mrs
Wade and Mrs Ingham.
The fun part of the day
was making a balloon powered car
that would travel further than any
other groups along a piece of string. All groups had a pack of resources to make
their car. There was frantic activity putting the cars together and many popped
balloons in the early stages of development! Banned was the overall winner
travelling 20 feet, impressive!
As part of the design
process, pupils had to come up with
a corporate image and marketing
strategy. These were varied and
innovative, the winning team being
“Grass”.
Pupils also took part in
activities designed to make them
think about their own typical daily
carbon footprint and the future of
transport.
During the day Miss Stobbs operated a diary room and created a blog.
Please use the following link to have a look at the blog and photographs from the
day. The blog contains all the winners.
http://hodgsonschool.wordpress.com/category/uncategorized/
The newly formed team then had an opportunity to spend two days at Rock
FM for training. We have now created a Media Lab within school for the students to
record their program.
You can hear the next instalment on www.boomradio.co.uk on Friday 23rd
July 7-8pm and should continue on the last Friday of every month.

Mr Lamoury July 2010
Hodgson has taken its first steps to gaining an international partnership
with Dharma Duta College, Badulla, Sri Lanka! The schools contacts are
Mrs Sumeda Dissananyake and Mrs Nirupa Samarakon who are very excited to
have the opportunity to work with us.
Students from both schools will be have the opportunity to work
together on the following projects when we return from summer:
1. Growing vegetables in waste cans using the Hydroponic Growing
Technology.
2. Making simple telescopes observe the phases of the moon and keep
records.
3. Historical places in Sri Lanka and UK.
4. Waterfalls in Sri Lanka and UK.
5. Examining native festivals of countries.
Staff will be meeting in the next few weeks to discuss how the

WHAT A BUZZ AT BIZ!!!
Students at Hodgson School in
Poulton held their annual BIZ event
on Friday 28th May. The weather was
glorious and the enthusiasm of students
infectious. The event enabled students
to be assessed in their knowledge of
enterprise, development of business
plans along with the potential of their
ideas as a future business.
Students developed a range
of ideas which included origami, cup
cakes, a Dog Walking business, pencils,
bookmarks, mugs, castle cakes, keyrings,
Science pens, biscuits, balloons, candles
and World Cup Memorabilia.
Students demonstrated great
team work and proved to be excellent
future entrepreneurs. An amazing £300
was raised from this event and this will
be donated to Trinity Hospice.
Assistant Lead Teacher, Miss Binns
who organised the event said “the ideas
were amazing”. The enthusiasm shown
by the students was a pleasure to see
and shows the great potential of young
people in today’s society.
The competition was fierce
between students involved in BIZ
with the prospect of prizes and cups
being available for the winners. At
KS3 the Winner was Geography with
the runner up prize being awarded to
Food Technology. The KS4 Winner
was Business Studies and ICT with the
runner up being GCSE Manufacturing. A
brilliant day with some very impressive
business ideas.
Piece of Cake Piece of Cake Piece
From History to the World Cup! During the year Destanie Cardwell Jones has created a range of
cakes. At the start of the year she participated in 7C’s charity event making cup cakes which
raised £134 for charity. Shortly after this Destanie designed a Castle Cake for History.
Destanie played a key role in the Food Technology entry at BIZ by producing World Cup
cakes. They were made using World Cup baking cases and flags for added effect. She
produced these using white glace icing and red sweet shoe laces to make a cross across
the top of the cup cakes.
To finish the year and to get into the spirit of the World Cup
Destanie designed a square World Cup cake which was decorated
with white icing and embossed with red icing to resemble the St
Georges Sign.
Hodgson School was awarded the High Impact Badge of Honour for exposing students
to life-changing entrepreneurial experiences which took place during Global Entrepreneurship
Week. Just 240 out of 4,800 events received this special status.

On the 28th June 60 students and 6 staff
departed from Hodgson at 5 past midnight to spend
6 days in the North Black Forest and the Alsace
region of France. As this was the first Year 8 group to
have studied both French and German Mrs Emmett
decided to choose a location where students could
visit French and German speaking towns. The visit
was an amazing success. There were visits to Monkey
Mountain, where the group saw Monkeys at close
hand, a boat trip in Strasbourg, a scenic tour of
Baden Baden on a miniature train and a scary ride
on a mountain coaster . Have a look at it on www.
hasenhorn.de
All the students were extremely well behaved
and a joy to be with say all the teachers. “ We are
all looking forward to next year’s trip” says Mrs
Emmett.

The LRC has been decorated with World Cup bunting, World Cup information and World Cup
wall charts, which are being kept up to date as the competition progresses. We are also running 2
competitions to coincide with the World Cup – name all the flags of the 32 countries taking part and
design a kit for the winning team (entry forms are available from the LRC). Both competitions will
close on 1st July.
In the last issue of Hodgson Highlight I
mentioned that due to the installation of white
boards quite a few book shelves have needed to
be removed to accommodate them and this has
meant that the books have been displaced. This has
lead to the books being in need of re-arranging.
If there is anyone reading this report who may

someone who has some spare time, loves books
and can volunteer some time each week/month to

Lonely Hearts Club’ by the Beatles. It
culminated in a concert at Hodgson with
a performance of songs such as With a
Little Help from My Friends, Strawberry
Fields Forever and A Day in the Life. The
project was devised by David Ashworth,
senior advisor for music technology
and supported by the Lancashire Music
Service. In the first half, gifted and talented
students from other Lancashire schools
performed compositions loosely based
on some of the themes in Sgt Pepper.
Mr Dawson said ‘‘The standard was
incredibly high given the complexity of
some of the songs, especially in the vocal
parts and harmonies. The Beatles sound
was different to any other rock music of
the time and I think our musicians rose
to the task magnificently on the night’’
Live recordings of the songs performed
by Hodgson students can be heard on
Moodle.

Sport Report
KS 3 LEADERSHIP
SCHEME
16 students in year 7 and 8
have completed a Young Sports
leadership course alongside 16
students from Millfield school.
They spent 4 weeks learning about
the skills and qualities needed to
deliver sport to younger children
to prepare to run a Sports Club
for local primary schools. All
students passed the course and
did exceptionally well. They were
all presented with a Young leaders
T-shirt to wear in recognition of
their achievement. Well done!
TENNIS
Excellent club links have been
forged with Moorland tennis club
this summer. Year 8 students have
had 6 weeks curriculum time of
high quality tennis coaching, year
10 and 11 B-tech classes have had
coaching at the club. A year 8 and
9 tournament took place against
Baines School with Sam Bradshaw
winning the year 9 boys competition
and Ellie Coleman was runner up in
the year 8 tournament.
By School Sports Coordinator Mrs Brunskill
CRICKET
The year 7 boys team have had a
great start to their cricket career at
Hodgson School. They have come
second in their league and won 3
out of four of their matches. The
Chance to Shine Programme has
been a great success with coach
Nigel Rhodes from Fylde Cricket
Club delivering the programme
to all of year 7 increasing our
Community Sporting Links. Year 8
girls have also received coaching in
curriculum time.
ATHLETICS
The excellent summer weather
has had a big impact on our
athletics programme this year.
All year 7’s completed a Virtual
Athletics Competition, completing
3 events. The 50m sprint, standing
broad jump and the Vortex
Howler throw. The results have
been forwarded to a central point
and results will be compared with
those of other schools. We await
the results!
The boys and girls teams
took part in the Fylde Coast
Championships with excellent
performances from many of our
students.
Congratulations to
Taegan O’Hara who won the 75m
Hurdles. She is also Lancashire
Champion in this event. Lauren
Burrell won the 800m race and
was second in the Lancashire
Championships. Taegan
also
recently represented Lancashire
Schools Junior Pentathlon Team
at the English schools in Telford.
Lancashire were 2nd overall and
Taegan came 10th. Kalum Shaw
was second in the year 9 javelin
and there were some excellent
performances from many of our
students. Harry Prestwich came
second in his event and second
in the North West Bi-athlon
Championships. He also came
and 10th in the national under 14
Bi-athlon Championships. Well
done Harry!
CHEERLEADING
The Hodgson Squad performed
the best routine yet at the 4th
Wyre and Fylde Cheerleading
festival. Thanks must go to
Jenna Robinson from Blackpool
Scorpions for training the team
and doing such a fantastic job with
the girls.
NATIONAL SPORTS
WEEK
Hodgson School took a full and
active part in this National Event
to promote the 2012 Olympics
and Para-Olympics. Mini-olympic
games were held in curriculum
time. A dance show was held at
Hodgson where four local primary
schools took part involving 80
students, Hodgson Dance group
and the newly formed Musical
Theatre group under the direction
of Miss Edgar. Natalie Pollard and
Polly Thompson came back to
school to perform an outstanding
piece of work.
On the Friday year 7 took part
in a ‘Skip For Life’ organised by
Rock FM. Over 40,000 students
throughout Lancashire took part
simultaneously and skipped for
three minutes at 12.20 pm to a
selected song. Thanks must go to
Neil Dawson, the Poulton Branch
Manager of Lloyds TSB bank
for coming to support us in this
world record breaking activity.
Sports day, a football and cricket
intra competition and many other
activities are organised for the
next week.
Bouncing Away
Hodgson entered a KS4 squad of girls into the Wyre and Fylde Trampoline competition in
June. 5 girls in Yr 10 and 11 represented the school performing both a set and freestyle routine
for the judges, teachers, parents and pupils. Vicky Birkett (pictured in photo 1) in Year 11, won
second prize overall for her combined total score in both routines. Miss Robinson was very
proud of all the girl’s efforts as they had all worked very hard on perfecting their routines and
were under pressure to perform them so well in front of the judges. Well done girls!
