Opioids and
Patient Safety
There are more deaths from opioids than
homicides in Maryland. But you don’t
have to be addicted to opioids
to die from an overdose. What should
be done about this health crisis? Chronic
pain is a problem for many. Should pain
medication be denied to those who are
addicted? Is there such a thing as “safe”
opioid prescribing? What is the treatment
for pregnant women with addictions?
Can a pregnant woman be forced into
treatment? How is a newborn treated
for opioid withdrawal, known as neonatal abstinence syndrome? What is
the Physician Drug Monitoring Program
(PDMP)? Learn about Naloxone and
SBIRT– Screening, Brief Intervention,
Referral to Treatment. Expand your
knowledge about preventing opioid
overdose and learn ways case
managers can help patients with
chronic pain and obstetric patients with
addictions.
