YEAR 3/GRADE 3 OVERALL EXPECTATIONS Subject: Foreign Language – Latvian host country language Language is fundamental to learning and permeates the entire programme. By learning language as well as learning about and through language, we nurture an appreciation of the richness of language and a love of literature. The language expectations are arranged into two main strands: oral communication and written communication which include visual communication. Language is a complex web of connections transcending the artificial separations of schedules and disciplines. The language strands are taught and learned simultaneously. Students will identify and reflect upon ‘big ideas’ by making connections between the questions asked and the concepts that drive the inquiry. They will learn to understand that effective use of language is a valuable life skill. Through the study of host country culture, geography and history students learn to respect the views, values and traditions of other individuals and cultures. By studying the host society the relationships between local and global concerns and issues are addressed. (Adopted from the IB PYP Language scope and sequence 2003) Oral Communication: Listening and Speaking Listening The students will: listen to and follow stories over a period of time identify main ideas in familiar texts begin to follow more complex sequences of instructions develop an awareness of rhythm and rhyme continue to develop listening skills. Speaking The students will: generate , develop and present ideas and opinions through talk in pairs and groups, and speak in front of an audience participate in imaginative play , storytelling, role play and dramatizations of stories use tone, volume and intonation to enhance meaning give directions ad respond to those begin to explain and discuss their own text begin to organize thoughts and feelings before speaking. Written Communication: Reading and Writing Reading The students will: read independently with greater accuracy and understanding predict and reflect on texts read read books for pleasure continue to develop reading strategies to make meaning of text ISR Latvian Grade 3 September 2007 understand and respond to the ideas and feeling expressed in texts use different ways to find information in various sources. Writing The students will: begin to use more difficult sentence structure write for a range of purposes, both creative and informational, for self and for others continue to use a range of strategies to spell words of increasing complexity continue to organize information using lists and webs continue to develop grammar skills (gender, synonyms/antonyms, pronouns) understand verb agreements begin to write independently with confidence use dictionary to write short familiar stories, poems and informative texts. Host country culture The students will: get acquainted with the basic Latvian solstice celebrations – Miķeļi, Ziemassvētki, Lieldienas, Jāņi learn Latvian folk songs, dances, and games listen to Latvian folk tales get acquainted with the classification of Latvian designs read and discuss fairy tale ‘’Kaķīša dzirnaviņas’’ by K. Skalbe. Host country georgraphy The students will: recognize and name neighboring countries recognize Riga – the capital of Latvia recognize the weather in Latvia. Host country history The students will: identify and describe historical castles in Latvia learn about history of Riga study the development of Latvian currency recognize and describe historical regions of Latvia.
