How to Identify Functions:
A relation is a function when:
• In ordered pairs, each ordered pair has a different
first element (all x values are different)
• In a table, all elements in 1st column are different
• In an arrow diagram, there is exactly one arrow
coming from each element in 1st set.
• In a graph, passes vertical line test
• A graph is a function ­ If a vertical line only passes through the graph in one place
• A graph is not a function ­ If a vertical line passes through the graph in more than one place
