Protists 1 Protists Lesson 9.1: True or False Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Write true if the statement is true or false if the statement is false. 1. ________ Of all eukaryotes, protists are the simplest. 2. ________ The Protist Kingdom is sometimes called the “trash can” kingdom because it includes mainly decomposers. 3. ________ The total number of living species of protists is unknown. 4. ________ The cells of all protists contain membrane-bound organelles called chloroplasts. 5. ________ Most protists have very simple life cycles. 6. ________ Protists called protozoa are probably ancestors of plants. 7. ________ Human diseases caused by protists include giardiasis and malaria. Lesson 9.1: Critical Reading Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Read this passage based on the text and answer the questions that follow. Fungus-like protists include slime molds and water molds. They exist as individual cells or as many cells that form a blob-like colony. They are probably ancestors of fungi. Like fungi, many fungus-like protists are decomposers. They absorb nutrients from dead logs, compost, and other organic remains. Slime molds are commonly found on rotting organic matter such as compost. Swarms of cells move very slowly over the surface. They digest and absorb nutrients as they go. One type of slime mold is called “dog vomit” mold because it resembles dog vomit. Water molds are commonly found in moist soil and surface water. Many water molds are plant pathogens or fish parasites. One type of water mold infiltrates potatoes and makes them unfit to eat. Questions 1. Relate molds to fungi. 2. Describe slime molds, where they are typically found, and how they get nutrients. 3. What are water molds? What relationships do they have with other organisms? Lesson 9.1: Multiple Choice Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Circle the letter of the correct choice. 1. Which trait characterizes protists but not prokaryotes? 1 www.ck12.org a. b. c. d. cell nucleus cell membrane cell wall all of the above 2. Which statement about protists is false? a. b. c. d. They are thought be the oldest eukaryotes They probably evolved from prokaryotes Most of them are single celled Some of them have specialized cells 3. What is a benefit of sexual reproduction over asexual reproduction? a. b. c. d. Sexual reproduction can occur very quickly Sexual reproduction allows rapid population growth Sexual reproduction increases genetic variation two of the above 4. How do protozoa resemble animals? a. b. c. d. They are producers Most of them can move All of them are multicellular Some of them can grow very large 5. Examples of algae include a. b. c. d. diatoms seaweed kelp all of the above 6. Which structures do algae share with plants? a. b. c. d. roots stems leaves none of the above 7. Most protist diseases in humans are caused by a. b. c. d. water molds algae protozoa slime molds Lesson 9.1: Matching Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Match each definition with the correct term. Definitions 1. ________ type of fungus-like protist commonly found on rotting organic matter 2. ________ common name for an animal-like protist 3. ________ temporary extension of the cytoplasm that a protozoan uses to move 2 www.ck12.org 4. 5. 6. 7. Chapter 1. Protists ________ all the phases an organism goes through in its life time ________ type of fungus-like protist commonly found in surface water ________ common name for a plant-like protist ________ appendage for movement that is found in protozoa and most prokaryotes Terms a. b. c. d. e. f. g. flagellum alga life cycle water mold pseudopod protozoan slime mold Lesson 9.1: Fill in the Blank Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Fill in the blank with the appropriate term. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The Protist Kingdom is in the ___________________ Domain. Algae that consist of single cells are called ___________________ . Seaweed is an example of multicellular___________________ . Any fungus-like protist is commonly called a(n) ___________________ . ___________________ are short, hair-like projections from protozoa that enable them to move. Algae contain organelles called ___________________ , which allow them to make food by photosynthesis. Protozoa get food by eating other organisms, so they are classified as ___________________ . Lesson 9.1: Critical Writing Name___________________ Class______________ Date________ Thoroughly answer the question below. Use appropriate academic vocabulary and clear and complete sentences. Compare and contrast protozoa and algae. 3
