April 9, 2014 – HIGH POINT, N.C. – With nearly half of all Americans reporting occasional insomnia,
22 percent experiencing sleeplessness every, or almost every, night and women three times more
likely to report problems with sleep than men, according to the National Sleep Foundation, little
wonder there’s more interest than ever in creating peaceful spaces conducive to sleep.
Once a category dominated by ultra-plush mattresses, feathery pillows, downy duvets and high
thread-count linens, the quest for soft, inviting surrounds has prompted a growing number of
furniture manufacturers to introduce fully upholstered beds, as well as a wide variety of upholstered
headboards at the High Point Market here this week.

“Upholstered headboards solve a couple of challenges for consumers craving change,” says Jackie
Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance. “Updating a bed in an allwood bedroom with an upholstered headboard is a quick and affordable move that can have a
dramatic effect on the overall look and feel of the space. Simply put, as the focal point of the
bedroom, an upholstered headboard offers a lot of decorating bang for the buck.”
Indeed, from a design standpoint, upholstered beds provide flexibility, with looks that are fresh and
modern, casual or embellished with all manner of dressmaker details like tucks and tufting,
contrasting piping, slipcovers, embroidery and nailhead trims.

“The addition of fabric introduces color, texture and pattern to a space, while the upholstered
frames can add dimension and structure – creating a sense of depth and softness that wood furniture
can’t match,” Hirschhaut notes. “It’s a great way to personalize your bedroom, and fabrics used on a
headboard and footboard can also coordinate with other elements of the room, such as window
treatments or upholstered chairs or benches.”
Of course, upholstered headboards also provide an increased sense of coziness and comfort. “For
people who like to read in bed, or sit up to watch television or surf the internet, an upholstered
headboard prevents those back pillows from sliding. They are a soft backrest to lean against, one
that is more comfortable than a wood or metal headboard,” she continues.
There’s one more consideration for those who toss and turn in their sleep: The softness of a fabriccovered headboard may be more conducive to a good night’s sleep, since it is softer than hitting up
against metal or wood.
