Scripture Readings: 6th Sunday of Easter Next

Scripture Readings: Body and Blood of Christ
TO THOSE PASSING BY…
(Corpus Christi)
Dt 8: 2-3, 14-16; 1 Cor 10: 16-17; Jn 4: 51-58
The Jews have a saying: "to remember is to live. to forget is to
die." The people of God must not be amnesiacs, forgetting the
wonderful deeds God has done on our behalf. We must recall
the times that God has directed us through our wilderness
journeys, the ways God satisfied our deepest hunger to know
and understand God's ways. Yet often we forget to remember!
"Do this in rememberance of me," Jesus tells us. He is the
"living bread" sent by God, broken and shared to give life to
the world. All who eat the bread and share the cup of salvation
will have communion with him and with one another.
"Remember!" Paul reminds us. "Is this not the cup of blessing,
the blood of Christ that we share? Is this not the one loaf, the
body of Christ that we break?" Though many are gathered at
the table, we are all one in Christ's Body.
"Remember" the church teaches us in the eucharistic prayer
--anamnesis, to call to mind the gift of Christ's passion, death,
and resurrection. We must not suffer loss of memory for God's
gracious benefists to us.
For Reflection: Recall all the blessings you have received
from God. Have you shared these with others?
Next Week: 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jer 20: 10-13; Rom 5: 12-15; Mt 10: 26-33 (94)
There's a beautiful line in Psalm 40: I have waited, waited
for the Lord, and he stooped toward me and heard my
cry."
A little story ...
One day on Seventh Avenue, a parishioner saw an act of
unusual tenderness. Early in the morning, a man in a
businness suit was walking along with his son. The child
had something wrong with his shoe, maybe a pebble in it,
or a wrinkled sock. Anyway, it was clearly troubling him.
The father stopped and got right down on his knees on the
sidewalk to help fix the problem.
No worry about the crease in his trousers! No His only
thought was to give comfort to his son.
A little question
Would the child remember this particular moment?
Maybe not. But surely this was the father's daily "way of
living, " a way that would influence the child's life forever.
For all of us ... sometimes we are inclined to be helpful,
but hold back a bit. Maybe in making up our mind whether
to plunge in to the full, we will remember this story and
stop, stoop, kneel, whatever it takes, to give comfort to
someone who is waiting , waiting, for our loving care.
MASS INTENTIONS
"People shouldn't be forgotten, they matter"
Jesus was aware of this when He offered us the Mass and His
Body and Blood so we would remember Him. We know that
the memorial of the Mass is a real participation in the ongoing
life of our glorified Lord. We also believe that our deceased
share that same life with Him. Unlike any other way, the Mass
enables us not only to remember our deceased but also,
through Christ, to share in their spiritual presence. The
offering is $15 per Mass Intention, which is a way of
providing for the needs of the church and a tangible way of
offering the gift of remembrance. Other ways to remember
your loved ones are also available.
Blessings to you now as you continue on your way,
especially if you are a father!
CHILDREN'S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Children who have reached school age and do not attend a
Catholic school should be enrolled in our Parish Faith
Formation Program. We urge parents to support the
promises you made at your child's baptism by providing
your child with this opportunity to grow in the knowledge
and love of God. Registration for fall classes is taking
place now. Pleae call Sister Helene at 718-857-2903 to set
up an appointment.
PETER'S PENCE COLLECTION
OUR PARISH SUPPORT
Next weekend our diocese will take up the Peter's Pence
Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he
needs to carry out his charitable works around the world.
The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins
of society, including victims of war, oppression, and diasters.
Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are
suffering.
We rely on the generosity of your contributions to support
our church and its mission.
Always remember...God calls all of us to practice the good
stewardship of our time, talent and resources, in gratitude
to Him for all He has given us.

PUT YOUR FAITH INTO ACTION
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The parish is once again providing an opportunity to put your
faith to work this summer at the CAMBA respite shelter at
Old First Reformed Church.
In John’s gospel we read: “But if anyone has the world’s
goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against
him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us
not love in word or talk but in deed and truth.”
For several years, our neighbor, Old First Reformed Church,
is providing space for a shelter over the summer. Various faith
communities each volunteer for a week during the summer to
“staff” the shelter at Old First and for the 6th year, our
parishioners will be providing meals and overnight presence
for the 10-12 men housed each night.
SFX is committed to staff M-F the week of July 11th to 15th.
If you are going to be away that week but would like to
volunteer, St Augustine will be staffing the week of July 4th.
CAMBA, a Brooklyn-based non-profit agency that “provides
services that connect people with opportunities to enhance
their quality of life” (www.camba.org), transports the men to
the shelter each evening and provides cots, bedding, towels
and toiletries. The men, or guests, are working poor or those
working with CAMBA to get their life back on track. They
are screened by CAMBA for acceptance for the summer
respite shelters established around the borough. The guests set
up their cots and remove linens, put cots away in the morning.
Volunteer opportunities include either bringing and serving
food for dinner or staying overnight.
Dinner volunteers collaborate to provide a nutritious hot meal,
cooked ahead of time at home by the volunteers, set up tables
and the buffet, and help with serving, and clean up. The time
commitment, other than the time spent cooking at home is 1 ½
to 2 hours, from 6:00 to 6:30 pm arrival until clean-up is
accomplished between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. 3-5 people usually
collaborate each evening.
Overnight volunteers arrive around 7:00 pm, eat dinner with
the other volunteers and guests and then oversee “lights out”
around 10:00 pm. Volunteers sleep in a separate space from
the shelter guests and turn the lights on at 5:00 am. Overnight
volunteers prepare a pot of coffee. CAMBA transportation
arrives to pick up the shelter guests between 5:30 and 6:00
am. Once the guests have left, the overnight volunteers go
home. So, it leaves plenty of time to get to start your day and
get to work. 2 volunteers are needed each evening.
We have had a core group of 10-12 parishioners who have
volunteered previous years. If we had 10-12 more
volunteers, we would each need to volunteer only one
evening making it easier on everyone.
This is an opportunity offered once a year at Old First.
However, CAMBA operates these shelters all year round
and is always looking for volunteers. To volunteer or if
you have questions, please contact Regie Hawkey at
[email protected].
The parish will be sending an email blast about this
opportunity as well.
Thank you for considering this easy way to fulfill your
obligation to put your faith into action.
ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY
The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank
everyone for their continued support and donations of
food through outt the year. Due to the summer months, we
close on Wednesday, June 28th and reopen in September.
Please refrain from bringing any food donations until then.
Thank you and have a blessed and safe summer.
Again, God Bless You. The St. Vincent de Paul Society.
ARE YOU EXPECTING A BABY?
St. Francis Xavier Parish offers Elizabeth Ministry for
mothers-to-be, whether they are pregnant or expecting a
child through adoption. The purpose of Elizabeth Ministry
is to reach out to women in special times of motherhood.
Our ministry offers expectant mothers a spiritual support
system by providing each with an anonymous prayer
partner. This helps the mother-to-be relax knowing that a
parish member is praying for her and her family. To find
out how to sign up, please look for Elizabeth Ministry
pamphlets in the racks in the church vestibule.
ST. AUGUSTINES'
HELPING HANDS FOOD PANTRY
Volunteers are needed on Thursday and Saturday
mornings at St. Augustines' Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Thursday mornings from 10am to noon to help put
away/and or move food. Some lifting involved, moving the
cases of food. Saturday mornings when the food pantry is
open, from 10am to noon, volunteers are needed to help
register clients.
if you are interested in helping, please call Jean Prahl at
