2010 - Ocean Discovery Institute

Annual Report 2010
Dear Friends,
Looking back at 2010, we are overwhelmed by our students’
accomplishments. Just a few of these successes included:
By integrating education, scientific research, and environmental
stewardship, Ocean Discovery Institute initiatives transform young lives
and strengthen the future of our region, state, and nation.
114 served
After-school Initiative
Ocean Leaders
• Conducting research with scientists that led to our students
publishing, in a scientific journal, methods to protect sea
turtles that are now being tested around the world;
• 100% of our after-school program graduates continuing
their education at schools like Brown, UC Berkeley, and
UC San Diego;
• Middle and high school students recruiting their families
and neighbors to transform a crime-ridden and
environmentally degraded canyon into a community
resource; and
• Elementary school students exploring the marine
environment by engineering their own remotely operated
vehicles and decoding DNA to identify species.
These successes were made possible in 2010 thanks to your
commitment to Ocean Discovery Institute. Additional outcomes
from our programs and services are outlined in this report. Please
take a moment to explore our students’ unlimited potential and
how they are making a difference.

Empowering Young People to Transform
Their Lives, Their Community, & Our World
Ocean Discovery Institute
generates the spark that makes young people want to learn and empowers them to
transform their lives through science. Young people learn through discovery. As they
use science to discover the world around them, they discover themselves and their
future as scientific and environmental leaders. Ocean Discovery Institute uses
science exploration to engage youth from urban and diverse backgrounds in
education, scientific research, and environmental stewardship.
We focus our efforts in one geographic area, City Heights in central San Diego,
working to connect an entire community to science and conservation. Each year, we
serve 5,000 young people with tuition-free programs, and are growing to serve over
20,000 individuals each year. We believe that these young people have unlimited
potential and want to make a difference. Ultimately, their discoveries will reveal new
ways to protect the ocean and nature, improve the health of our communities, and
strengthen the quality of life in our world.
Community
Initiative: Science
Adventurers
By engaging the public in science
relevant to their lives, this
initiative inspires the community
to inquire, investigate, and
innovate. Science Adventurers
reaches an entire community –
toddlers through seniors –
building scientific literacy
through hands-on activities.
“I never imagined myself
engaging thousands of people
about today's most pressing
water conservation issues. It
was an awesome experience
Outreach team member Isabel Herrera educates children about the science of water conservation at the
2010 USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. Through her participation in afterschool programs and support services, Isabel has realized her passion for teaching and has mentored
younger students for the last two years, guiding them to make their own discoveries.
that I will never forget.“

Community Initiative:
Watershed Avengers
Habitat stewardship efforts are focused
on six urban canyons in City Heights.
This work is mobilizing the community
to actively transform these canyons into
safe and healthy places for urban youth
to play, learn, and explore.
“As the Environmental
Stewardship Discovery Fellow, I’m
excited to be back leading my
community in the restoration of
our local natural environment,
and raising awareness about
conservation.”
-Tram Nguyen
Tram Nguyen performs restoration work in Swan Canyon
alongside a young community member. Tram, who began as a
student with Ocean Discovery Institute 7 years ago, graduated
with a biology degree from UC Berkeley and chose to bring
her passion back to her community by leading our
environmental stewardship efforts.

By engaging children when their
natural curiosity for science is
high and continuing the program
over four years, students develop
the skills needed to become our
future decision-makers and

grade level specific and aligned
with national and California
state standards.

Ocean Leaders
Through a series of interconnected
after-school and summer programs and support
services, middle school through college-age youth
are provided a pathway to progress toward college
and careers in science and conservation.
“It is very important to know when you have
