Temple on the Road:
A View from Behind the Wheel
BY CANTOR DEBORAH HARTMAN
T
his year, The Temple embarked on an initiative to bring new venues of worship to our diverse and
widespread congregation. In October, Temple on the Road, a vision of Rabbi Berg and our engagement team, headed by Rabbi Lydia Medwin, began travelling to zip codes beyond midtown and
reaching many of our congregants who may or may not be able to arrive at our Peachtree Street location in
time for 6:00 PM Shabbat worship. None of us knew how this would be received, or if there would even be
an interest in meeting beyond our walls, but we quickly learned how much Temple on the Road was needed
and appreciated!
Attendance at the first three locations was extraordinary! Congregants of all ages turned out in droves for
our targeted Candler Park, Oak Grove and Sandy Springs locations. These were led by Rabbis Spinrad, Berg,
and Lapidus and accompanied by guitar. The reports were glowing…congregants loved the chance to worship
in their own neighborhoods, see familiar faces and establish community in their own backyards, all without
having to fight Atlanta’s traffic!
When my turn came to step out into the community, I
traveled to the William Breman Jewish Home and Lenbrook
Retirement Community. In preparing for these visits, I had
given lots of thought to how nice it would be for the residents of
these facilities to have The Temple come to them; but entertained
no thought as to how these visits would affect me. I was totally
unprepared for how personally meaningful they would be.
When Rabbi Berg and I arrived at The Jewish Home we found
the residents seated at lovely Shabbat dinner tables surrounded by
family, loving staff, and devoted caregivers. As Rabbi Berg started
to speak, and as we chanted the familiar words of the Shabbat
blessings, we were able to see the words come alive through the
eyes of the residents and their families. It was so touching for us
to be able to make that connection and to bring in Shabbat with
those not able to regularly attend worship services.
The Lenbrook visit was equally meaningful. This time, I
brought along Judy Cole, our pianist extraordinaire! We were
amazed at the number of familiar faces and fabulous attendance. Here too, tables were set for Shabbat dinner and lovingly
cantor deborah hartman
attended by staff. The residents participated with us and were
can be reached at:
fully engaged in worship. We even managed to fit in a few tunes [email protected]
from Fiddler on the Roof! I heard laughter, and saw tears too,
as the tunes we sang struck a chord of familiarity and a sense of being home.
We can experience that feeling of a congregational home on multiple levels. In addition to Temple on the
Road, Temple in the Neighborhood connects us via our zip codes for camaraderie and socializing. Both
these initiatives, as well as our small group conversations, contribute to strengthening our community and
deepening our friendships. Last but not least, through the marvels of technology, we now livestream our
chapel and sanctuary worship services to countless viewers every Shabbat.
While we would like to think that everyone can join us in person and regularly at our Temple facility, we
know that is not always possible. Fortunately, we have a variety of options that bind us together as family, creating a large, diverse and extraordinary extended community.

For nearly a century and a half, The Temple has been a beacon in the Jewish world. Today, Rabbi Berg
leads the most forward thinking, innovative clergy and education team in the Reform Movement.
Mark Jacobson and his administrative staff provide skillful and caring enterprise management, and
our lay leadership upholds a nearly 150 year legacy of passionate commitment to our Temple community. We offer our community an unmatched breadth of worship, learning, social and community
service opportunities, and The Temple is at the forefront of re-defining how a 21st century synagogue
engages throughout the community. Above all else, it is the generous, unwavering support of our
Temple family that affords us the resources to be the most vibrant, exciting congregation anywhere.
When our doors opened in 1867, our founders could not have imagined the world as it is today.
Neither can we fully define today the needs of tomorrow – but we can prepare – by building an endowment that gives us the ability to act, to respond and to be – The Temple.
As you know, The Temple has launched Chalom L’atid: Dreaming for Tomorrow—an Endowment
Campaign with a goal of increasing our current endowment to $36 million. In so doing, the campaign
is assuring our ability to continue the important work of our sacred community for a generation to
come. Already, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of members who have responded to this
opportunity.
Please consider joining with us and your fellow Temple members in Dreaming for Tomorrow by
making a multi-year pledge, a planned gift or both. Together, we can assure that The Temple continues
to help define the path of Reform Judaism for generations to come.
For more information on the endowment campaign, please visit the-temple.org/dream or
contact Mark Jacobson, Executive Director at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

First Friday Presents:
8th Night Kabbalistic
Passover Seder for
Young Professionals
Friday, April 10 • 8:00 PM
For the Jewish Mystics, the 8th and final night of Passover offered a new
take on an ancient tradition. They internalized our ancient story of moving from Egyptian slavery to liberation, and saw in it a five-stage process
to move from personal bondage to freedom. In lieu of our more typical
Friday service, join Rabbi Spinrad and the First Friday crew as we take this
journey together. The cost of the Seder is $25 with all proceeds donated to
The Temple’s Blessing Box Project, the part of our ongoing, multi-faceted
Anti-sex Trafficking Initiative that goes after hunger, one of the root causes
of slavery. Space is limited to the first 50 registrants.

Blessing Boxes
Sunday, April 12 • 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Action Ministries Feed the Hungry Warehouse
2160 Hills Ave, Suite F, Atlanta, GA 30318
As a part of our ongoing Anti-sex Trafficking Initiative, join your Temple community as we make an
impact on hunger, a root cause of modern day slavery
and trafficking. This year’s program is an expansion of
2014’s Blessing Bag project and follows best practices
as laid out by our partner organizations, who recommend boxes of non-perishable food rather than bags. This is an
acknowledgement that those who are food recipients come from homes where all
residents living there may food insecure.
Our goal in 2015 is to fill 1,000 boxes, meaning The Temple needs to raise $5,000
to cover the $5 per box fee to cover administrative and transportation costs. All are
welcome, but volunteers ages 12 and under must have adult supervision.
You may donate by either sending your check to The Temple with “Blessing Boxes”
in the memo line or by calling The Temple to donate by credit card. To register to
volunteer, please email our Core Team Leader Mary Anne Fry at [email protected].
Thank you for your generosity and for helping us to make Atlanta freedom’s home!
Library News
At Passover we gather together to tell the story of our exodus from Egypt and
how we became a people who accepted the Torah. You can find that story in the
many beautiful Haggadahs in the 262.5 area of our library.
Of course, when we Jews get together, we eat. Check out our cookbook section,
641.5, for many delicious recipes. And have a great Seder.

Daytime Discussion Group
Wednesday, April 22 • 10:30 AM
For our April meeting, we will be discussing Jewish European composers, and
why some converted out of Judaism. Together we’ll be using the resources of
the library to learn about this topic. You don’t have to read ahead; everyone is
welcome. The Daytime Discussion group meets monthly before the first Lunch
and Learn.
Temple Book Club
Tuesday, April 14 • 7:30 PM • Temple Media Center
We will be reading A Guide for the Perplexed, a novel by
Dara Horn. Bob Wenger will lead our discussion of this
page-turning mystery which skillfully blends the psychology of Biblical and modern sibling rivalry with the theology of medieval philosopher Maimonides, the twentiethcentury scholarly research of Solomon Schechter, the Arab
Spring, and the digital frontier of computer apps. Dara
Horn has taught Jewish literature and history at Harvard
University and her novels have won the National Jewish
Book Award for Fiction and Editors' Choice by the New
York Times Book Review.

DAVID BRO OKS: ON CHARACTER
Sunday, May 3 @ 3PM-5PM **Please Note Time Change **
Join New York Times columnist David Brooks for an in-depth discussion about
what constitutes character as explored in his new book. Some people seem to
possess inner lives that are more substantive than the rest of ours. How do they
do it? Depth, argues Brooks, is the core of our being and something we cultivate
over time; it’s engraved by thought and action; it’s built through the commitments we make—to a nation, a faith, a calling or loved ones—and the sacrifices
we endure because of those commitments.

Tuesday, April 21 • 7:30 PM at Congregation Ahavath Achim
The Consulate General of Israel of the Southeast and the Israeli House in
Atlanta invite The Temple to participate in the annual Memorial Ceremony
for Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Yom Hazikaron is designated
as Israel’s official Memorial Day to honor its fallen servicemen, servicewomen, and civilian casualties. Yom Hazikaron gives us the opportunity to
honor and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name
of Israel. This year’s Memorial Ceremony will take place at Congregation
Ahavath Achim on April 21 at 7:30 PM.
We ask that congregants provide the Consulate General of Israel with the
names of any immediate family members who have fallen while protecting
Israel or as victims of terror. We want to honor those from our local community, and there will be memorial candles located at the entrance of AA.
These candles will be lit during the ceremony.
If you plan to attend, please wear a white shirt and arrive to the synagogue
no later than 7:15 PM. There will be a security screening prior to entering
the synagogue, and guests are asked to leave large bags and unnecessary
items in their vehicles.

Caring at The Temple
Our Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during
times of hardship or pastoral need, providing homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or
are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We recently celebrated our 500th soup
delivery, and nearly every step of the program—from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about
fellow congregants in need—is led by members of our
congregation.
Thanks to our Caring at The Temple volunteers who
delivered soup this month:
Lara Church Geller, Civia Gerber, Lisa Katz, Robbie
Levin, Deborah Maslia, Mitzi Michelson, Sharyn Mulqueen, Jill Slavin and Leslie Stone.
To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah
of bikkur cholimI (visiting the sick) or to let us know
who needs soup, please contact Rabbi David Spinrad at

The Temple’s 2015 Confirmands
C O N F I R M AT I O N C L A S S O F 2 0 1 5
There are few prouder moments for The Temple than when we come together to consecrate the
confirmation of our young members. This year, we will celebrate on Friday, May 1 with the following
confirmands and their families. Then join us on Sunday, May 3 at 10:00 AM as our confirmands lead us
in their confirmation service. All of our Temple members are invited to join in this joyous occasion with us.

SAV E T
H E SE DATES!
FRIDAY, APRIL 3
Zaban Couples Center
At the end of April, the Zaban Couples Center will complete another successful residential season. But make no mistake, the work of the Center is far from over when the residents move out.
The Center provides ongoing support, educational sessions and social services to former residents
throughout the year.
Over the past six months, many of this year’s residents found new jobs, strengthened their relationships with their partners and learned new coping skills to help them as they embark on this
next phase of independent living.
Thanks to the generosity of members of the Temple as well as
other congregations, churches, school/youth groups and foundations
throughout the city, the residents benefited from a safe environment
to live, healthy dinners, numerous lunches and many programs to help
get them back on their feet.
If you are interested in learning more about and/or supporting the
Zaban Couples Center, please visit the web site www.zabancouplescenter.org or its Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ZabanCouplesCenter

The Temple and JF&CS Moas Chitim –
Passover Food Drive
Moas Chitim (“wheat money”) is an ancient custom in which Jews provide funds to Jews in need
for the purchase of Passover food. JF&CS supports a group of dedicated volunteers who have taken
on the responsibility of Moas Chitim in Atlanta. JF&CS coordinates the distribution of food and
financial assistance for these Jewish families.
Last year we gave out over 240 bags of food to Jewish Atlantans in need. You can help by collecting these specific Passover items (all marked Kosher for Passover) and place them in the barrel
in the lobby.
• Passover Chocolates and/or Fruit Gels
• Macaroons (any flavor)
• Dried Fruits
• Gefilte Fish
• Matzo Ball and Soup Mix
• Passover Preserves
•Tuna
Please note: We Are Not Collecting Matzo or any
Matzo products. These items have already been ordered.

Temple History
Janice Rothchild Blumberg and Barbara Seligman accompany
a group of students from the University of Pennsylvania on a
historical tour of The Temple. The students are studying civil
rights through a cultural program that has been taking them
on a tour of a few major cities (including Selma, Alabama) that
were heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
"Today we are visiting The Temple to learn about and explore
the relationship between blacks and Jews", says one student.
For more information, please contact: Elizabeth Foster at [email protected]. All food must be
collected by Sunday, March 22nd in order to distribute by Passover. Thank you for your support!
