It is a Chinese Buddhist monastery established for the preservation of the inheritance of the Dharma preached by Śākyamuni Buddha. Through organizing Dharma talks and lectures, spiritual practices, experiential programmes, educational activities, and community services, the Monastery is dedicated to responding to the spiritual needs and serving society through the perfected fusion of the Dharma. Tour B - Chi Lin Nunnery, Nan Lian Garden and Wong Tai Sin Temple Established in 1934 and renovated in Tang dynasty style (AD 618–907) in 1990, the Chi Lin Nunnery is a large temple complex of elegant wooden architecture, treasured Buddhist relics and soul-soothing lotus ponds. The complex also includes a series of temple halls, some of which contain gold, clay and wooden statues representing divinities such as the Sakyamuni Buddha and bodhisattva. Cutting through Diamond Hill’s myriad of high-rise apartments is the tranquil Nan Lian Garden, a public park also built in the style of the Tang dynasty. Its scenic garden is meticulously landscaped over an area of 3.5 hectares, in which every hill, rock, body of water, plant and timber structure has been placed according to specific rules and methods. There are permanent exhibitions of Chinese timber architecture, rocks and potted plants. The Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple’s claim to ‘make every wish come true upon request’ might have something to do with its popularity. Home to three religions (Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism), its natural setting and beautifully ornamented buildings make it as much a scenic attraction as an important religious centre. The temple has a two-storey covered arcade containing 161 soothsayer booths, run by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and 41 temple goods stalls selling incense sticks, paper offerings, souvenirs etc. Many of the fortune tellers speak English. -4- Tour C - Kowloon Walled City Garden and Jade Market The Kowloon Walled City Garden sits on the very site of the former Kowloon Walled City, remembered today as a haven of crime and debauchery. The site occupies a strategic point along the Kowloon peninsula and has been used by Chinese imperial officials since the 16th century. In 1841, when Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain, Kowloon Walled City was already a garrison and was reinforced by the Chinese Government. The fort’s fate changed in 1898 when the New Territories were leased to Britain for 99 years. Although the walled city remained Chinese territory by treaty, the following year their troops and officials were forced to vacate. Behind them they left a power vacuum that was filled by criminals, and the garrison became a city within a city. In 1987, with the agreement of China, the colonial government replaced the slum with a park. Today, the Chinese-style park preserves traces of the walled city, most notably its yamen, the imperial government administrative building. The Jiangnan garden–style of the park also offers visitors a chance to appreciate the beauty of nature in a place where the darker side of human nature once flourished. If shopping takes your fancy over architecture and monuments, you won’t be disappointed with the quality and quantity of jade being sold by the more than hundreds of stalls at the Jade Market. The most common items to be poked through are jade accessories, including rings, bangles, pendants and earrings, but expect to come across some more unusual finds as well. Optional Night Tour with Dinner on 27 April 2018 Visit Victoria Peak with peak tram & The Sky Terrace. Dinner at Jumbo Floating Restaurant.
