presented to over 700 guests last November at the East End Studios in Milan, including partners from more than 100 Italian law firms. The record number of participants
at the tenth TopLegal Awards was boosted by the presence of company counsel representing leading Italian corporates and financial institutions. As in recent years, all the
winners were selected by a joint team composed of TopLegal’s team of journalists and

The Highlights
Among the headline individual winners, Stefano Simontacchi of BonelliErede won the
top prize for Professional of the Year. Simontacchi had been honoured in 2015 as Managing Partner of the Year, the prize claimed this year by Federico Sutti of Dentons. Linklaters partner Claudia Parzani was named Female Lawyer of the Year.
Among the major team wins, Legance finished top as Law Firm of the Year. Four law
firms, including BonelliErede, Clifford Chance, DLA Piper and Gianni Origoni Grippo
Cappelli received recognitions in two separate categories.
In the main transactional categories, BonelliErede overcame stiff competition to win
the prize for Corporate/M&A, while the Chiomenti team scored a victory in the Capital
Markets category. Clifford Chance beat rivals to emerge as winner for Banking and Finance.
Among the other major law firm winners, niche firms figured prominently in a
strong year for Italian boutiques. Rubini won the category for Dispute Resolution and
Arbitration while Ludovici Piccone, a spin-off which only launched in 2015, won the
team award for tax. Cintioli emerged as team winner for Public Law.
The Italian Desk of the Year award was introduced in 2014 to recognize Italian legal
teams who advise on significant transactions without a presence in Italy. This year, two
accolades were given for the unique contribution made by independent and international firms to advising Italian clients abroad. Iberian giant Garrigues was recognized
as the leading international firm while Dutch practice Van Campen Liem won in the
independent firm category.

Co-managing partner since 2013, Simontacchi has been a driving force behind the firm’s

A key figure among capital markets specialists, Messina advised on setting up new
measures designed to backstop the Italian banking system. In particular, he contributed
to converting into law the Decree on a state guarantee scheme to facilitate the securitization and sale of non-performing loans.

troubled bank Veneto Banca on its complex reorganization process and capital increase,

Advised Banco Popolare on its ground-breaking merger with Banca Popolare di Milano. The deal was part of the Italian government’s policy to consolidate and strengthen

Acknowledged for his representation of executives from the Pirelli group involved in
criminal cases brought by the company’s employees in relation to alleged health and
saftey liabilities.

Secured the definitive acquittal of a CEO in relation to alleged international money
laundering involving a well-known Luxembourg-based financial company.
Commercial Criminal: Tax
Individual: FABIO CAGNOLA (Cagnola)
Defended Irish-based Apple executive Michael O’Sullivan in a case brought by Italian
prosecutors following a probe which alleged that Apple had failed to pay €879m in taxes
in the country. The six-month jail sentence for the executive was later converted into the
payment of a €45,000 settlement. The case was the first of its kind to be brought against
Apple employees in Europe relating to unpaid taxes.

Won a major victory for Telecom Italia in one of the most significant commercial international arbitrations at the ICC which rejected a request to fine the Italian telecoms
company €15bn.

Advised Snam Rete Gas, an Italian natural gas infrastructure company, in relation to a
dispute with an energy company that uses the Snam network to transport its natural
gas. The provisions obtained by the team at the Court of Milan are the first that acknowledge the lawfulness of the Network Code.

Advised AIG Europe on the reorganization of its Italian subsidiary including the trade
union procedures relating to collective agreements in a rare case involving the Italian
insurance sector.

Advised Italian furniture company Natuzzi on its restructuring which included a solidarity agreement for over 1,900 employees, temporary layoff benefit schemes for over
300 employees and a collective redundancy procedure to close down one of the company’s manufacturing facilities.
