Food for fines each month
The Library has a way for you to settle your overdue
fines and help the community at the same time:
bring in food!
During the third full week of each month, The
Library will accept donations of nonperishable
food items in lieu of fines for overdue materials. All
donations will be collected and passed along to the
South Shore Community Action Council for the
Food Warehouse, which serves local families.
Food for Fines weeks in 2011 include June 19-25,

The Sixth Annual Seniors’ Springtime Social was
held at the Main Library on March 30. More than
30 people attended and competed for prizes by
playing games including Icebreaker Truth & Lies,
Mirrored Bean Bag Toss, and Sentence Scrambles.
Attendees were grouped into teams, and the
winners of each game got to select prizes from the
Prizemobile, which was decorated in springtime
colors and filled with a variety of fun items such
as novelty pillows, puzzles, note cards, kitchen
accessories, paperweights, stuffed toys, wildflower
seeds and more. Each guest received a springtime
flower, keychain whistle, and a chance to win the
door prize. All were treated to an assortment of
cookies, coffee, juice and other snacks. The door
prize – a glazed planter filled with rose-colored
pansies – was won by Jackie Giaccagelia of
Plymouth.
Sharon LaRosa, Senior Services Librarian,
organized this much-anticipated program and
served as hostess. She was assisted by staff member
Beverly Ness and volunteer Lucinda Carpenter.
Though it didn’t feel like springtime outside,
Sharon, Beverly and Lucinda made sure that all
attendees had an enjoyable afternoon of shared
laughter, camaraderie, and mental and physical
exercise.

The Children’s Room offers a variety of
opportunities for parents to promote early literacy
and reading readiness with their children. There
are six areas of early literacy that help children
become good readers. They include vocabulary,
print awareness, print motivation, phonological
awareness, narrative skills and letter knowledge.
These skills are integrated through stories, finger
plays, songs and activities in our programs.

Jen Kane American Reading Adventure
The Youth Services Department is pleased to
present the Second Annual Jen Kane American
Reading Adventure running now through Aug.
20. This reading program was developed with
a donation from the Jen Kane Scholarship and
Charitable Trust which provides scholarships,
endowments and donations to charitable
foundations.
The Library was selected to establish an annual
reading program in honor of Jennifer Kane and
her deep sense of patriotism. Jennifer grew up in
Plymouth, attended the Plymouth Public Schools,
Thayer Academy and graduated from Villanova
University in 1997. She secured a CPA position
with Marsh McLennan on the 100th floor of the
World Trade Center. On Sept. 11, 2001, Jennifer
lost her life. That day became a tragic part of
history and Jennifer Kane will be remembered as
part of that history.
The Jen Kane American Reading Adventure is
for children ages 5-12. Children and their families
can stop by the Children’s Room to sign up for the
program, receive activity booklets and a suggested
reading list. Those children who have completed
all the activities will be recognized during a special
finale event.
For more information, contact Youth Services at
508-830-4250.

school in September, a library card is the most

immediately.
