The Newsletter of the Plymouth Public Library Summer 2011 • Volume 14, No. 1 One Play, One Community: Romeo & Juliet The Library in collaboration with Plimoth Plantation and Plymouth Area Community Television (PACTV) have partnered to sponsor a summer of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. One Play, One Community is funded in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Foundation of the Humanities. Patrons can sign up for the One Play, One Community: Romeo & Juliet on May 23 and receive a free copy (while supplies last) of the Modern Library version of the Shakespeare play, information on the New Endings Challenge and Balcony Slam. Check out all of the programs during the summer including “The Stars that Crossed the Lovers; Shakespeare and the Heavens,” The Bard BQ&A daytime program and the performance of Romeo & Juliet by the Plimoth Players on the front lawn of the Main Library. S ummertime and the living is easy – especially with Concerts on the Lawn! The 12th annual summer series includes four great programs on the front lawn of the Main Library. Performances are held at 1 p.m. on selected Thursdays. Here is the schedule: Aug. 4 – Four Guys in Tuxes June 30 – Trio Amaroso Aug. 18 – Bard BQ&A This world-music group features influences ranging from jazz and Flamenco to samba and bossa-nova. Trio Amaroso includes vocalist/percussionist Jim Porcella, 7-string guitarist Ron Murray and saxophone master Michael Monaghan. Their repertoire is a scintillating mix of American jazz and pop standards, Brazilian sounds, Flamenco and South American themes, and a handful of original pieces. July 21 – The Lindsays Rooted in Celtic music but incorporating blues, jazz and world sounds, The Lindsays present a fun and eclectic mix of entertainment with guitar, flute, sax and This Seniors Lawn Concert features a wide range of music for listening, dancing or both – from the Big Band Era and Jimmy Buffet to Swing and Classic Rock. Four Guys in Tuxes appear regularly throughout New England. The series wraps up with a free barbecue on the lawn of the Main Library with Bard BQ&A. Here’s your chance to meet the Plimoth Players and talk with local English teachers about Shakespeare as part of One Play, One Community: Romeo & Juliet. The barbeque concludes with the Plimoth Players performing winning entries in the “New Endings” challenge. Concerts on the Lawn is a great way to celebrate the summer. Performances are held on the front lawn at the Main Library, so plan to bring folding chairs, blankets, picnic lunch, refreshments and sun protection. African Drumming and Dance Program Learn how to dance to African music with Rumbafrica on Thursday, June 23, at 3 p.m. in the Otto Fehlow Meeting Room at the Main Library. Children of all ages and their families will be dancing while learning about African heritage through music. Meet the Maestro on Sept. 26 Steven Karidoyanes, Music Director of the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra, will introduce the 2011-12 Philharmonic’s 96th season Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Otto Fehlow Meeting Room at the Main Library. This season celebrates Conductor Karidoyanes’s 18th appearance at The Library. Come share in the behind-the-scenes stories about the beauty of classical music. Learn about the music from a classical music announcer/producer who is a frequent fill-in host for Boston’s WGBH Radio and has worked for National Public Radio affiliates in North Carolina and Indiana. Karidoyanes, a Boston native, is also the Director of the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony. For more information, call Adult Services at 508-830-4250. Food for fines each month The Library has a way for you to settle your overdue fines and help the community at the same time: bring in food! During the third full week of each month, The Library will accept donations of nonperishable food items in lieu of fines for overdue materials. All donations will be collected and passed along to the South Shore Community Action Council for the Food Warehouse, which serves local families. Food for Fines weeks in 2011 include June 19-25, July 17-23, Aug. 21-27, Sept. 18-24, Oct. 16-22, Nov. 20-26 and Dec. 18-24. The Food for Fines program does not include clearing old fines or fees. Please bring one nonperishable item to pay the fine for one overdue The Sixth Annual Seniors’ Springtime Social was held at the Main Library on March 30. More than 30 people attended and competed for prizes by playing games including Icebreaker Truth & Lies, Mirrored Bean Bag Toss, and Sentence Scrambles. Attendees were grouped into teams, and the winners of each game got to select prizes from the Prizemobile, which was decorated in springtime colors and filled with a variety of fun items such as novelty pillows, puzzles, note cards, kitchen accessories, paperweights, stuffed toys, wildflower seeds and more. Each guest received a springtime flower, keychain whistle, and a chance to win the door prize. All were treated to an assortment of cookies, coffee, juice and other snacks. The door prize – a glazed planter filled with rose-colored pansies – was won by Jackie Giaccagelia of Plymouth. Sharon LaRosa, Senior Services Librarian, organized this much-anticipated program and served as hostess. She was assisted by staff member Beverly Ness and volunteer Lucinda Carpenter. Though it didn’t feel like springtime outside, Sharon, Beverly and Lucinda made sure that all attendees had an enjoyable afternoon of shared laughter, camaraderie, and mental and physical exercise. Summer Reading at The Library The Library kicks off the annual summer reading program on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the Summer Solstice Book Sale. The theme for the 2011 statewide summer reading adventure for children is One World, Many Stories while the theme for teens is You Are Here. The summer reading program encourages reading as a lifelong habit, gets readers into The Library through activities and provides a variety of reading material, including magazines, graphic novels and books on CD. Reading over the summer helps children keep their skills up. Children and their families are encouraged to come to The Library to sign up for the program and get materials to start tracking summer reading. Children who sign up during this time will receive Library News One World, Many Stories and You Are Here, the 2011 statewide summer reading adventures, are sponsored by the Plymouth Public Library, Massachusetts Library System, Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Boston Bruins. Help raising grandkids Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Resource Fair will be held Wednesday, June 22, from 6-8 pm in the Otto Fehlow Room at the Main Library. The program will feature exhibits by community organizations that provide financial, social, health and legal services, such as Big Brother/Big Sister, Old Colony Elderly Services, and the South Shore Women’s Resource Center. COA Art Exhibit June 3-4 The Council on Aging will sponsor an Art Exhibit in the Otto Fehlow Meeting Room Friday and Saturday, June 3-4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Library is excited to display the delightful work of the various artists who meet and paint together at the Plymouth COA. The Council on Aging is a department of the Town of Plymouth supported by local, state and federal funds. The COA operates a Senior Center currently located at 10 Cordage Park Circle, Ste. 108, for the purpose of providing services for Plymouth residents 60 years of age and older. What better connection than the COA working with The Library to share a valuable treasure: our seniors’ talented artistry. The Children’s Room offers a variety of opportunities for parents to promote early literacy and reading readiness with their children. There are six areas of early literacy that help children become good readers. They include vocabulary, print awareness, print motivation, phonological awareness, narrative skills and letter knowledge. These skills are integrated through stories, finger plays, songs and activities in our programs. Tots ‘n’ Tales Our lap-sit story time for children 3 and under, accompanied by a caregiver, starts the week of June 22 and continues through Aug. 11. This program is held on Mondays at the Manomet Branch and on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Main Library. Library staff presents a half-hour story time at 11 a.m., with time at 10:45 a.m. to meet friends and settle in. Tots ‘n’ Tales is an opportunity for the youngest library users to enjoy all that the library has to offer: books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, puppets, new friends and fun! Story time consists of ageappropriate rhymes, stories, songs and other fun literacy building activities. The program is free and no registration in necessary. Mother Goose on the Loose This fun program resumes at the Main Library the week of June 15 at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays and at 4 p.m. on Thursdays. Mother Goose on the Loose is a weekly 30-minute story time that will run for 10 weeks until Aug. 18. This program is for children 18 months and under with a parent or caregiver. Jen Kane American Reading Adventure The Youth Services Department is pleased to present the Second Annual Jen Kane American Reading Adventure running now through Aug. 20. This reading program was developed with a donation from the Jen Kane Scholarship and Charitable Trust which provides scholarships, endowments and donations to charitable foundations. The Library was selected to establish an annual reading program in honor of Jennifer Kane and her deep sense of patriotism. Jennifer grew up in Plymouth, attended the Plymouth Public Schools, Thayer Academy and graduated from Villanova University in 1997. She secured a CPA position with Marsh McLennan on the 100th floor of the World Trade Center. On Sept. 11, 2001, Jennifer lost her life. That day became a tragic part of history and Jennifer Kane will be remembered as part of that history. The Jen Kane American Reading Adventure is for children ages 5-12. Children and their families can stop by the Children’s Room to sign up for the program, receive activity booklets and a suggested reading list. Sign up for library card As parents get their kids ready to go back to school in September, a library card is the most important school supply of all. At The Library, parents or guardians must come in with their child for the child to receive their own card. Library cards are free and borrowing privileges are granted immediately. The Library offers book, magazines, audio CDs, and DVDs for adults and children. For children Kids Connection and their families, The Library also offers a great selection of book and CD kits, as well as lots of games and puzzles for learning – all checked out free with a library card. Parents also have access to a great collection of parenting books and DVDs to help with childcare issues. The 15th annual Teens/Adults/Seniors Summer Reading Adventure also kicks off on June 18 at the Main Library and Manomet Branch. The program is geared to teens, adults and seniors and runs through Aug. 20. Novel Destinations @ The Library! is part of a national Collaborative Summer Library Program. Members of The Library’s Junior Friends will help patrons sign up at the Summer Solstice Book Sale on June 18. Register any time during the summer at the reference desk at either the Main Library or Manomet Branch. Everyone who signs up will receive a raffle ticket toward a gift certificate. This year’s games are Time ‘n’ Time Again, Critic’s Corner, and Library Scavenger Hunt. Every time you read a book, use The Library’s online databases, view a film, or listen to music, poetry or a book for 30 minutes, mark it down on your Time ‘n’ Time Again log sheet. After you have marked five squares (which equal 2 ½ hours), you will receive a ticket for the endof-summer raffle. Every time you fill out a Critic’s Corner form for a book, music, film, or online database, you receive an entry into the raffle. In addition, you will receive raffle tickets for finding items in The Library Scavenger Hunt. Winners will be announced at the end of the summer. Drop-In Story Time Schedule Youth Services will begin Drop-In Story Time the week of Sept. 13. This 30-minute program is for children ages 3 1/2 to 5 years old who can sit and listen attentively, independent of their parent or caregiver. It will be held on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. at the Manomet Branch, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 2:15 p.m. at the Main Library. There is no registration necessary for this program though children are requested to come 15 minutes before the start to receive nametags and settle in. Aug. 4 – One Play, One Community PAC TV Talk Show Episode Five: “Bard vs. The Board of Education: Finding School Time for Shakespeare.” Aug. 8 – “The Stars That Crossed The Lovers: Shakespeare and the Heavens.” South Shore Astronomical Society will have four telescopes on the Main Library lawn and will lead an evening of star gazing with specific attention to the celestial realms significant in Shakespeare’s plays. Aug. 11 – One Play, One Community PAC TV Talk Show Episode Six: “Romeo & Juliet for Twilight Readers.” Aug. 13 – “Shakespeare on the Strand” discussion program continues at Manomet Branch with The Taming of the Shrew. Aug. 18 – Bard BQ&A. Free barbecue on the lawn of the Main Library, a chance to meet the Plimoth Players and talk with local English teachers about Shakespeare. Barbecue will conclude with the Plimoth Players performing the winning entries in the “New Endings” challenge. Aug. 18 – One Play, One Community PAC TV Talk Show Episode Seven: “I Deny You Stars! I Defy You Stars! Which is your right Romeo?” Aug. 22 – Production at The Library with a prebroadcast performance along with a camera crew from PAC TV. Aug. 22 – “Editing Romeo & Juliet for the 21st Century,” Professor Eric Rasmussen, guest speaker. Aug. 25 – Free performance of Romeo & Juliet on Main Library lawn with live simulcast of performance carried by PAC TV. Aug. 25 – One Play, One Community PAC TV Talk Show Episode Eight: “Cutting for the Stage and Adapting Shakespeare for Television.” Sept. 19 – “Posthumous Love: The Afterlife of Romeo and Juliet,” Professor Ramie Targoff, guest speaker.
