ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
PURPOSE:
Each year the Alumni Association of Bishop McDevitt Catholic High School awards
two $1,000.00 scholarships and two $500.00 scholarships to the children,
grandchildren or legal guardian of any alum. The purpose is to further cultivate
the rich legacy of our school by fostering the interest among our alumni in
sending their children or children under their guardianship to Bishop McDevitt
High School. In doing so, the Association wishes to further financially assist
through this scholarship in the expenses of sending their child to our Alma Mater.
ELIGIBILITY:
The eligibility requirements to participate in the scholarship program are as
follows:
1. The parent or guardian or grandparent must be a graduate of Bishop
McDevitt High School.
2. The participant must be an incoming freshman, sophomore, junior or
senior. The student must express desire to complete his/her
education at Bishop McDevitt.
3. The participant must be “in good standing” with McDevitt – both
academically and financially.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Application
Students must complete the attached application in full. Failure to do so may
result in the Scholarship Application being removed from consideration.
The application must be signed by the student and his/her parent or legal
guardian.
This application will be used to verify eligibility requirements.
2. Essay
The student will be required to write an essay of no less than 500 words and no
more than 1,000 words on a topic designated by the Executive Board of the
Alumni Association of Bishop McDevitt High School.
This year, 2017, the topic selected by the Scholarship Committee is as follows:
“Mary, our school’s Patroness, is also the Patroness of the United States of
America. How does your faith help you be a responsible citizen of your school,
your community and your country?”
Essay Requirements:
 Typed
 Times New Roman style font
 12 point font size
 1 inch margins on all sides
 Double – spaced throughout
 Spell-checked
 Grammar-checked
 Personally proofread
 Formal written English with no colloquial language or phrasing
 Essay must be written by the student with no assistance from adults, other
students or the Internet

Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in the Scholarship
Application being removed from consideration
In addition, the student must complete the Essay Cover page (found on Page 7 of
this Application Package).
IN ORDER TO INSURE FAIRNESS IN JUDGING, PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY
IDENTIFYING INFORMATION IN YOUR ESSAY – I.E. YOUR NAME, YOUR PARENTS’
OR SIBLINGS’ NAMES.
Judging:
Essays will be judged by a panel of Bishop McDevitt alumni on the following
criteria:
 The ability to follow the directions listed here
 Content of the essay as it pertains to the topic
 Originality
 Creativity
 Organization
3. Completion and Submission
The original essay, the Essay Cover page, and application should be placed in a
large manila envelope. The Scholarship Package can be mailed or dropped off to:

Only original applications will be accepted. Applications will not be accepted via
fax or email.

4. Deadlines
APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE BY FRIDAY,
APRIL 7, 2017 – NO EXCEPTIONS! ANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER THE DUE
DATE ARE INELIGIBLE FOR JUDGING.
Scholarship Recipients will receive notification of their award in early May.
5. Other
The decision of the Scholarship Committee is final.
The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to contact a student for clarification
of his/her application and/or essay.
Upon receipt of a Bishop McDevitt Alumni Association scholarship, the recipient
will be required to perform five (5) hours of service to the Alumni Association.
This may consist of:
 Setup or cleanup at McDevitt Alumni Association events
 Greeting attendees at Alumni Association events
 Assisting with mailings or other administrative functions
It would also be expected that the scholarship recipient’s parents or guardians
would perform service to the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association is
committed to encouraging a culture of “paying it forward” so that future
generations of McDevitt students will continue to receive the opportunities that
we can now currently provide thru the dedication of Alumni Association
volunteers.
