Throughout the day at the Children’s Promise, patients, family members, faculty and staff told us what the N.C. Children’s Hospital means to them. Participate in Miracles! Following our 115 day stay in the intensive care units here at UNC’s N.C. Children’s Hospital, I can honestly say that I left feeling privileged to have been able to be a part of the miracles that occur at this hospital. My son, Ned, was born with a condition known as CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia) which prevented his lungs from forming prenatally. My husband and I had travelled across the country to find the best physicans to treat our son. The more research we did, the more grim his prognosis became. He was given a projected survival rate of less than 20 percent. We chose UNC after meeting some of the surgeons and head of pediatrics here. Then please come to an “Input Session” hosted by the Work Flexibility Task Force to learn more and provide input on these topics. The Work Flexibility Task Force originated several months ago in response to the tremendous financial and personnel pressures generated by the ongoing economic crisis. The group meets every two weeks to find new and innovative ways to improve transportation options between home and work, explore and expand opportunities to work from home, and create flexible work schedules at UNC Health Care. We have researched and created some possible ideas and policy changes that we feel would benefit both employees and UNC Health Care. We are excited about this first step to share our initial findings with you. (continued from page 1) confidence and hope gave us a peace that we were longing to experience. After birth, Ned received his CDH repair on day 3 of life. It was also on that day that the doctors here diagnosed a heart defect that would also require repair surgery. While that news could have been a huge blow, our doctors here possessed a quiet knowing that allowed me to place my son in their care with complete trust. Clearly, it was warranted. Today, following thirteen surgical proceedures, my 10 month old is growing and thriving. As I return here today, I see the faces of those who were instrumental in the healing of my son and who literally walked with me through some of my deepest valleys. Their work is nothing short of miraculous and, as a staff, they meet every need of both patients and families. Diana Reyes spent time with patients and visitors before and after her performance. http://intranet.unchealthcare.org First quarter patient and employee satisfaction update Dear Colleagues, Our patients expect nothing but the best from UNC Health Care. Today I’ll update you on our first quarter patient and employee satisfaction scores. • The new Employee Incentive Plan (EIP) goals fall into four categories: Finance, Patient Satisfaction, Employee Satisfaction and Clinical Outcomes/Patient Safety. Meeting these EIP goals determines any future bonus payments. 1st quarter Patient Satisfaction update We have identified three goals regarding patient satisfaction in the EIP. In total, these goals comprise 15 percent (or 5 percent each) of a possible bonus. Our patient satisfaction scores include data from Press Ganey surveys and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). • Our target is to score better than 90 percent on the HCAHPS question that asks our patients “Would you recommend UNC Health Care?” We surpassed this goal during our last HCAHPS survey, when more than 91 percent of our patients said they would recommend UNC. • On the inpatient side, our target is to surpass the 65th percentile for patient satisfaction. Our inpatient satisfaction scores for the first quarter place us in the 48th percentile nationally. • On the outpatient side, we have also targeted the 65th percentile. Our first quarter outpatient scores place us in the 63rd percentile. 1st quarter Employee Satisfaction update Creating a positive workplace is everybody’s responsibility, and we recognize that your happiness plays a large part in our success. For that reason, employee satisfaction scores comprise 20 percent of any possible bonus. We measure employee satisfaction in the EIP in terms of retention/turnover rates and Employee Opinion Survey scores. • Our retention rate is expected to exceed 86 percent. Though other variables are involved, high retention and low turnover rates signal that we are providing a positive work environment and meeting your expectations. Through the first quarter, our retention rate is 87.2 percent. • Our second employee satisfaction measure is the Employee Opinion Survey, which we will take in the spring of 2009. You will hear more about this survey as it approaches. Through our everyday interactions with patients and colleagues, we each play a large role in improving both patient and employee experiences. Men’s basketball season to affect parking and transportation On UNC home basketball game days, please be prepared and allow extra time when traveling to/from UNC Hospitals. Also, be careful as you walk around campus, as traffic will be heavy prior to game times. For weekday home games, those with S11 permits must remove their cars from the S11 lot by 5 p.m. or risk being ticketed and towed. Employees with an S11 permit working past 5:30 p.m. on home basketball game days may come to the Hospitals Parking Office on 3 Neurosciences to obtain a “game day permit” to display alongside their S11 permit. The game day permit allows you to park in a different location on game days. If you have any questions about parking for basketball home games, please contact the Transportation and Parking office at 966-1031.
