From the Principal:
Happy March to all our Camelot families,
want to thank the PTA Board, PTA members and the
Camelot Staff for an awesome community breakfast held
at Applebee's. We served 298 meals! The PTA raised
over $1300 to support Camelot Elementaryl

Dates to Remember
As you know, Mr. Joe Kosty has accepted the position
March 16th 7:00pm
as the Principal of Camelot next school year. ln the next 4/5 Grade Concert
few weeks, I will be sharing with you opportunities to
E arly Re ease March 22nd 1.50pm
meet Mr. Kosty. Camelot will be lucky to have him as the
next Principal as his focus is on what is best for
March 23rd
Spirit Day - Twin Day
students. I also want to assure you that I will be
meeting with him also, in order to ensure a smooth
Grade Concert March 28th 7:00pm
transition for next year.
Gentle reminder that students who eat breakfast at
school should arrive no later than 8:30am. There are
significant numbers of students arriving after 8:30am
which is resulting in loss of instruction time as some are
having to eat in their classrooms.
Thank you for your support

our students who accomplished perfect attendance (with occasional tardies and early
releases) for the previous months. Below you will find the names of students with perfect
attendance for the month of February. Every month is a new start, so if your student is not on this list,
encourage them to come to school on time every day. lf your student will be absent or tardy, please call Mrs.

HERE!
Did you know? As a way to improve attendance at Camelot, we have an exciting incentive program
for our students. Each classroom teacher has letters to spell out HERE! For every day the class
has perfect attendance (including no tardies), the class earns a letter that is posted on the
wall. Once the class has spelled HERE! every student in the class receives a reward. Once a class
has earned HERE! twice, they increase the challenge and work on earning HERE NOW! Stars
displayed in the classroom windows represent how often your child's class has spelled their words.
Please do your part to ensure your child is at school on time every day. lf your child will be absent
or tardy, please notify Mrs. Lothian at 253.945.2502. Thank you for your help in supporting your
students education!

Mvth About School Attendance
From "Five Myths About Schoo/ Attendance" by Hey Chang, co-author of "Present,
Engaged, and Accounted For," a 2008 report on chronic early absenteeism, and the
director of Attendance Works
Myth - Absences in the Early Grades Don't Really Affect Academics
National research shows that chronically absent kindergartners demonstrated lower academic
performance than their peers once they got to 1st grade. For many low-income children, the poor
performance persisted through Sth grade. A long-term study in Baltimore showed that many
chronically absent 6th graders later dropped out of high school. ln Chicago, poor attendance in 9th
grade was a better predictor of dropping out than 8th grade test scores.
When too many students miss too much school, the classroom churn starts to affect the entire class,
as teachers repeat material to help children catch up. When state funding is linked to attendance,
these absences mean schools get less money.

Teach Your Ch¡ld About Peacefu I Wavs to Eroress His/Her Anoer
By Karin A. Bilich
Most people feel anger and aggression sometimes -- including children. Adults tend to
have better control over their behavior when these feelings arise. Children, however, may turn their
energy toward violent behavior such as kicking, biting, or hitting. lf your child has a tendency toward
this kind of aggressive behavior, it's up to you to help him develop judgment, self-discipline, and the
ability to express his feelings in appropriate ways. Here are six ways to do that:
l.
Set firm and consistent limits. Children need to know what behavior is, and is not, permitted
Make sure that everyone who cares for your child is aware of the rules you set, as well as the
response to use if he does exhibit this behavior. A child who kicks, hits, or bites should be
reprimanded immediately so he understands exactly what he's done wrong.
2. Help your child find new ways to deal with his/her anger. Encourage her to use words to
express her feelings rather than fighting with her body, and praise her for exhibiting nonviolent
behavior. Let him/her witness other conflicts that arise in your home being resolved in a peaceful
manner.
3. Instill self-control in your child. Children don't possess an innate ability to control themselves
They need to be taught not to kick, hit, or bite whenever they feel like it. A child needs a parent's
guidance to develop the ability to keep his feelings under control and to think about his actions
before acting on impulse.
4. Avoid encouraging "toughness." ln some families, aggressiveness is encouraged -- especially
in boys. Parents often use the word "tough" to compliment a child. This can cause a child to feel that
he/she has to kick and bite in order to win parental approval.
5. Don't spank as a form of discipline. Some parents spank or hit their child as punishment. A
child who is physically punished can begin to believe this is the correct way to handle people when
you don't like their behavior. Physical punishment can reinforce a child's aggressiveness toward
others.
6. Control your own temper. Children tend to mirror the behavior of their parents. lf you express
your anger in reasonable ways, he probably will follow your example.

DON'T LET ABSENCES ADD UP!
Just two (2) absences every month adds up to 20
school days! Students who miss 10o/o, or 18 days, in
a school year are at risk of falling behind academically
Here are 3 simple tips to help you and your child get
ready for school every day:
Set your alarm, leaving extra time for unexpected
delays.
Lay out clothing and supplies for the next day,
Make sure your transportation plan is in order.
