Beginning of "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus
On the 17th of October 1957 Albert Camus (French-Algerian author, journalist and philosopher) was awarded the Nobel Prize for
Literature. He is most probably the forefather of absurdism, a philosophical concept that he first introduced in his essay, "The Myth of
Sisyphus".
"In Greek mythology Sisyphus was a king of Ephyra punished for chronic deceitfulness by being compelled to roll an immense boulder
up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever". He tried to cheat death and his wish was indeed granted ...
for all eternity.
We believe that Camus’ analysis of this famous myth is very much worth sharing. According to Camus, what Sisyphus shows us is that
people should accept and deal with their fate, either suffering with it or enjoying it, depending on what comes along. Sisyphus shows
he is stronger than the rock. The happiness of this strong man consists in the fact that he is the owner of his destiny.
What could be considered as a futile and hopeless task is not so, as each repetition makes him stronger; and repeating it countless times
he finds a different way of doing it each time. Camus finishes the essay with this: "One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
