LAB - Rubber Ball

BOUNCY BALLS
You and your lab team design and test new toys for the acme
toy company. You have been asked by the administrative
board to find new ways to save money for the company. One
suggestion is they are looking at the rubber bouncy ball
division. They want the bouncy balls to have a lot of spring in
them, yet, not spend too much money in the rubber it costs to
produce them. The administrative board believes that the
company can possibly save money by cutting back on the
DENSITY of the ball and still have them bounce as high (or
even higher). You and your team will be designing a valid
experiment to test the claim that the DENSITY of the ball
effects its bounce.

Each person on your team will have a job, they are as follows:
Scientist #1 - You will calculate the density of
the current ball made by the company. You will
also be the dropper for the ball testing and write
a final report of your findings to the
administration(analysis and conclusion).
Scientist #2 - You will calculate the density of
the new "test" ball. You will be the measurer of
the ball bounce and make the graph.
Data Collector - You will do all of the recording
on a data table. Do at least 5 trials per ball.
Project Marketer - With the help of your team,
you will identify all parts of the experiment and
design the poster. For the poster you must
collect from your teammates the data table,
graph and final report to the administration and
attach to the poster.

POSTER
Here are the requirements for the poster:
1. Identification of:
Independent Variable
Dependent Variable
Experimental Question
Hypothesis
Constants
Control Group
(6 points total)
2. A well constructed Data Table (5 points)
3. A well constructed and correctly labeled line graph (5 points)
4. A well written, grammatically correct report (preferably typed) to the
administration about your findings. (5 points)
5. Artistically attractive (Color, TITLES, overall presentation) (4 points)
Total 25 points
Everyone in your group receives the same grade. If one person is not doing
their fair share, please inform me so I can work with that person to find out why
they are not being a team player.

Some questions to consider when writing your
conclusion report to the administration:
1. How did you perform you experiment (in other words, a
brief description of your team's procedure)?
2. What are the major findings from your
experiment (in other words, what did the DATA show)?
3. What were some possible flaws to your
experiment (in other words, were their any factors in your
testing that could have flawed the results)?
4. What is your group's final recommendation to the original
problem (changing density of rubber balls to save money)?

CHECKLIST TO MAKE SURE YOUR
POSTER IS COMPLETE:
1. Did you correctly identify all 6 parts of the experiment somewhere on the poster?
2. Did you calculate the density of the rubber balls correctly (hint: two float, one does not, which means
two of them should be less than 1.0 g/cm3 and one should be greater than 1.0 g/cm3)
2.
•
•
•
Data Table:
Does it include IV and DV?
Did you do at least 5 trials?
Does it have an appropriate title?
3.
•
•
•
•
Graph:
Does it have an appropriate title?
Does it label the IV and DV with units?
Is it a LINE Graph?
Is the X axis a number scale?
4.
•
•
•
Conclusion
Is it neat and easy to read?
Are complete sentences used?
Could someone not familiar with this experiment kind of understand what you are saying?
5. Overall presentation
• Does the poster have some color?
• Is there some "organization" to your information on your poster?
