2012 Bantam Tackle Season Highlights

There’s an old adage in football that says “a
always win your last game”. For the 2012 Bantams, that
didn’t happen, but since that last game was the “A” Cup Final against a very tough unbeaten
opponent, our season must be considered a success. Overall, including regular season and play-offs,
we were 9 and 2, which by any measure has to be deemed a great achievement.
There were a number of highlights to the 2012 season. After beating Orleans 34-0 to close out the
regular season, we then met them one week later in the quarter-finals. It was the perfect storm. You
could see and feel the tensions on the field growing almost from the opening kick-off as it quickly
became apparent that they were no match for us. At the end of the third quarter the score was 36-0 for
us which meant that after seven consecutive quarters of play, we had out-scored them 70-0. That was
when things boiled over and two players from each team were ejected. The balance of the game was
played under a running clock and ended without further event. In fact, at that point both teams just
wanted a quick end. However, there was the matter of the suspensions, which would carry over to the
“A” Cup semi-final. Both teams appealed the suspensions and after a review of the circumstances,
the “perfect storm” that I mentioned, league officials rescinded the suspensions and our boys were
allowed to play.
Our opponent in that “A” Cup semi was the unbeaten Gloucester South Raiders – a tough, talented,
well-coached team. That game may well go down in my memory as one of the best games I have
ever been involved with. After falling behind, 21- 7, we never gave up but stuck to our game plan and
outscored them 49-14 over the last three quarters for a resounding 56-35 victory that left the Raiders
absolutely stunned into silence. What a game! We were headed to the “A” Cup final as one of the top
two teams in the league. Looking back, we probably peaked the week before the final and we lost that
game. However, as I said to the boys after that game, they had nothing to feel bad about – it had
been a tremendous year and we, as coaches were extremely proud of each and every one of the
players.
I would like to extend my best wishes to our graduating players – you hopefully leave our program with
some lessons learned about team-work, focus, effort, sportsmanship, and determination – the sort of
life-lessons that can be applied to whatever you do in your future. On a personal note, as most of you
know, 2012 will be my last year with the Warriors. I leave the Club in good hands with Paul Stewart as
your new Club President. Paul has all the right skills, energies and attitude to ensure success for
many years. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the 2012 Bantam coaches. We established
and maintained an amazing chemistry that I know the players recognized and fed off. Thank you all
for making my last year such a memorable one.
To all the returning players, 2013 is another chance to go after that elusive “A” Cup. Make sure you
always strive for the top and never be satisfied with anything less, whether it’s on the field, in the
classroom, or with family and friends. You only get back what you put in. On that note, I will take my
leave and wish each and every one of you the very best in your future. Thank you.

ABOUT THE BELL WARRIORS: The Bell Warriors Minor Football Club offers an amateur
tackle football program for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17. The Club has been in
existence since 1955, with a team in the Pee Wee division. As the league has expanded, so
to have the Warriors, and now has close to 138 players competing annually at the Tyke,
Mosquito, Pee Wee and Bantam levels. Our territory includes Bells Corners, Crystal Beach,
Bayshore, Britannia, Stittsville, Richmond and Munster. Our organization stresses skills
development, sportsmanship, and the value of teamwork. Over fifty volunteers help us to
attain these goals through their efforts as club executives, coaches, conveners, event
organizers and as bingo workers. Without their help, the Club would not be able to function.
