The Man From Memphis: What Made Elvis the Legend We Know
Today
There is a mystical aura about people who become legends
-- that something extra that sets them apart, making them
a little more than just mere mortals. With legends, the
last name usually does it for recognition like Bogart,
Monroe, Sinatra, Dietrich… but there is one legend who is
so close, so familiar that we refer to him by his first name;
Elvis. But what exactly was it that made Elvis Presley a
legend?
The man and his music
Contrary to popular belief, Elvis wasn't the musician who
invented rock and roll. However, he is credited for making
it intensely and irrevocably popular. What Elvis did
wasn't exactly unprecedented because there were other
musicians like Chuck Berry and Bill Haley who were also into
the music. However, it was Elvis' musical and entertaining
style that set him apart.
Unlike his contemporaries, Elvis' music was a mix of
country, western, gospel, rhythm and blues; the kind of
popular music he grew up listening to. At a time when there
was still a racial divide between blacks and whites in
America, Elvis took black R&B and incorporated it into his
music. During his life and career, he blurred many racial,
social and musical barriers, something that many musicians
during his time were unable or unwilling to do.
Sex and rock and roll
Clean-cut white rock and roll was the popular music in his
era but Elvis took this seemingly tame genre and changed
it overnight. With his gyrations, frenzied dancing, vocal
styling, sensual good looks and unabashed sexuality, Elvis
produced an image of fun and good times with a healthy dose
of sensuality. It outraged conservatives but it earned
Elvis millions of young fans.
His live performances and TV appearances only cemented his
growing popularity. His music was hard, fast and extremely
potent. Elvis became a highly commercial success. His
records topped the charts, his concerts were sold-out and
he even starred in 33 films. Today, his record sales have
topped the one billion mark, making him the most saleable
artist in history.
The legend of Elvis
Elvis' legend is multi-faceted, composed of his unique and
witty style and image which richly combined his sensuality,
appeal and sense of humor. Add to that the numerous stories
of his good will and humility. His fame has grown over the
years and continues unabated to this day, fed by a strong
cult following.
Elvis probably never knew he'd become a legend and he would
probably be looking on in amusement if he were alive today,
but his impact on popular culture and on the lives of
millions has undoubtedly made him the legend we know and
love.
Elvis in the Movies: Top Elvis Movies to Rent This Weekend
Elvis Presley was better known as a singer and entertainer
but he also worked in films. In his lifetime, Elvis made
33 films; 31 were feature films and 2 were documentaries
about his life as a performer. Although most of his films
were box office successes, almost all of them were panned
by many critics. But really, who cares? If you're
watching an Elvis film, would you really mind? Here are
some of the top Elvis movies you might want to rent on video
night:
Viva Las Vegas
Elvis means Vegas and Vegas, of course, means Elvis. 'Viva
Las Vegas' is arguably the best of the films Elvis made after
he was discharged from the Army. This is pure Vegas
entertainment; glitzy, glossy and full of bubble gum fun.
Elvis plays a race car driver opposite Ann Margaret's
character. The plot is lean (it's an Elvis movie,
remember?) but just sit back and enjoy the songs, dance,
race car scenes and the incomparable Elvis-Ann Margaret
chemistry.
King Creole
If you want the film that had the least bad reviews, this
is the Elvis movie you should watch. In fact, this is
probably the movie that gave us a peek at the talent behind
the emerging legend that is Elvis. Originally intended for
James Dean, the lead role that Elvis played showed his
acting prowess best. It is another musical (we're not sure
if the studio was playing it safe at the time or merely
capitalizing on what Elvis did best) but it has its great
moments. Based on the novel 'A Stone for Danny Fisher' by
Harold Robbins, King Creole can be a little bit over-the-top
at times but it is an enjoyable movie starring Elvis in a
serious role.
Jailhouse Rock
Elvis goes to jail! If you want the raw '56 or '57 Elvis
with the pencil pants, this should give you a good look at
a man during the first precious stages of his entertaining
ability and good looks. He plays Vince Everett, a young
man who goes to prison for accidentally killing another man
in a brawl. The prison is where Vince learns to sing and
play the guitar, with a little help from his cellmate.
After his release, he decides to use his new-found talent
and become a professional singer and performer. This is
the movie with that famous 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'You're So
Square' musical performances. You'll love the songs in
this film and Elvis, of course, along with his equally
pretty lead actress. Although you'll find a colorized
version of the film, try the black and white version to
enhance its nourishing effect.
A Short History of Elvis Presley
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in the town
of Tupelo in Mississippi. As a member of the Pentecostal
church in his hometown, he was exposed early on to gospel
music. He also listened to country, western and blues
music. When he was a teenager, Elvis learned to play the
guitar on his own.
After high school, Elvis worked as a truck driver. He began
his foray into music in 1953 by recording several songs in
a Memphis, Tennessee recording studio as a gift to his
mother. The studio manager liked his style and Elvis was
offered a contract by Sam Phillips, the owner of the studio.
Phillips was also running his own record label called Sun
Records.
In 1955, Elvis transferred to RCA, one of the largest record
labels at the time. It was in RCA where Elvis met fellow
musicians Scotty Moore (guitars) and Bill Black (bass).
With RCA, Elvis recorded some of his most popular songs,
five of which reached the top spot in one year alone. These
include 1956's 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Hound Dog' and 'Love
Me Tender'. It was also during this time that Elvis'
signature moves drove the crowds crazy and made him popular
and controversial at the same time.
Gone to the movies
Elvis made a total of 33 films, beginning in 1956. Many
of those films were named after his songs. He then left
entertainment for two years when he joined the U.S. Army
in 1958. He was discharged in 1960. He returned to make
several more films, all of which were musicals, including
1964's 'Viva Las Vegas'.
At long last love?
In 1967, Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu, whom he met when
she was just a teenager. They had one daughter, Lisa Marie,
who later on became a musician herself. The Presley's'
marriage didn't last and they separated when Lisa Marie was
still a young girl.
The end of a musician and the beginning of a legend
Elvis continued to perform from the 60s till the 70s,
becoming one of the most popular performers in Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, his health began to deteriorate during this
time and he became drug-dependent. He died of a drug
overdose on August 16, 1977 at his Graceland estate. In
his lifetime, Elvis sold over a billion records and received
countless awards, including 3 Grammy nominations and the
Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award when he was only 36.
Today, Elvis is a rock and roll legend with more than 600
fan clubs worldwide. Thirty years after his death, his
influence continues.
Priscilla Presley:
More Than Just Elvis' Wife
Priscilla Beaulieu Presley was born Priscilla Ann Wagner
to James Wagner and Anna Iversen in Brooklyn, New York, on
May 24, 1945. When Priscilla's father, a pilot, died after
a plane crash, Anna Wagner re-married and Priscilla took
on the last name of her stepfather, Paul Beaulieu.
Meeting Elvis
Beaulieu was an officer in the U.S. Air Force who moved his
family to West Germany when he was stationed there. In
1958, Elvis Presley began his two-year service in the U.S.
Army. It was in Wiesbaden in 1959 when a 14-year-old
Priscilla met the 24-year-old Elvis. By this time,
Priscilla had grown into a stunning beauty.
Elvis was so taken with Priscilla that he persuaded the
Beaulieus to allow their daughter to live with Elvis'
parents in the U.S. Priscilla, who was 17 at the time, was
flown to Memphis with her stepfather to meet with the
Presley's. The meeting resulted to a special living and
schooling arrangement for the young girl.
Graceland
Priscilla moved to Elvis' estate Graceland with Elvis.
Much of what is known about her time with Elvis beginning
in 1963 comes from her own account and from friends and
acquaintances. In spite of their living arrangement,
Elvis waited until December 1966 before proposing to
Priscilla. They were married on May 1, 1967 in Las Vegas
with only their family and a few friends in attendance.
Nine months later, Priscilla gave birth to Lisa Marie, their
only child.
Elvis' wife
Her life as the wife of the famous Elvis Presley wasn't
exactly a fairy tale for Priscilla. She reportedly said
that Elvis was a night owl who had to rent out restaurants
just to dine out and make special arrangements with shop
owners to keep shops open after store hours. She also
reported that Elvis always used sleeping pills, even when
they first lived together and that his use of prescription
drugs increased over the years.
Life without Elvis
Priscilla's marriage to Elvis Presley lasted only 6 years.
They separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973. Priscilla,
who was only in her late 20s at the time, began to work as
a model and actress, starring in feature films and TV guest
appearances.
When Elvis' father Vernon died in 1979, Priscilla took over
the struggling estate and turned Graceland into a museum
and source of income. She became the president and
chairman of Elvis Presley Enterprises. Although never
remarried, she has been involved romantically with several
prominent men.
Today, Priscilla is a successful businesswoman with her own
line of products including perfumes and bed linens. She
is still known as Elvis' wife but she has definitely come
into her own.
Going to See Elvis?
Try These Elvis Vacations
If you want to get to know Elvis better, visit the places
where he's been. This is how you'll see the way he lived
and how he was such a private person. Here are some of the
things you can expect from an Elvis vacation:
Elvis vacations in Memphis, Tennessee
There are two things you'll love about Memphis, Tennessee
and they are both larger than life. One is Dolly Parton
and the other is Elvis Presley. Although he was born in
Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis and his parents moved to
Tennessee when he was young. This is where he began his
career as a singer.
There are several exclusive vacations such as Memphis
Memories from Country Music Travel that are offered to Elvis
fans who want to see Elvis' hometown. Memphis is just 200
miles coming from Nashville and there are several museums
and special sites that will make any Elvis vacation
memorable.
Memphis is where you'll find Sun Studio where
Elvis recorded some of his first songs and of course,
Graceland.
Another escorted tour is the Elvis and Southern Sounds Tour
and the Tennessee Regional Music Tour. Elvis and Southern
Sounds is a complete tour of the musical roots that began
in certain parts of Tennessee while the regional music tour
is a vacation that includes tours of Tupelo, Memphis and
Nashville.
Touring Graceland
Graceland is the home of the Presley's and is the most famous
home in America. The 14-acre estate is also the place for
one of the best Elvis vacations around. Some of these
vacation tours include the Graceland Memphis Vacation and
the Graceland Platinum Experience. Both vacation packages
offer guided tours of the mansion along with its many
attractions and a tour of Sun Studio, accommodations
included.
Guided tours will take guests inside Elvis' beloved house.
The tour guide will not take you upstairs to see the 'inner
sanctum' but it will give you a good glimpse at the life
Elvis led. The mansion houses two museums dedicated to
Elvis' memory. Graceland is also the home of Elvis'
numerous awards and his custom-built airplanes. In the
Elvis 56 area of the Sincerely Elvis Museum, you'll also
find exclusive photographs, footages and even archival
documents that you won't find anywhere else.
If you want a taste of Elvis' life as a night owl, try one
of those Elvis vacations that include a glimpse of this
not-so-famous side of his personality. Elvis After Dark,
for example, is an exhibit area found in the Graceland
Crossing shopping center. It also includes the pool table
used by Elvis and the Beatles. This pool table is available
for use by the public for a fee.
Rhythm to resurrect the Rock and roll icon
Becoming a rock 'n' roll icon doesn't come overnight, even
for the most sought after idol Elvis Presley himself. He
started building his image as soon as he was able to compose
a distinct taste, which most warmly welcomed more than he
expected.
From the ordinary
He was also similar to other high school guys during his
age, only a bit different when he started displaying his
own style when it came to fashion. This was the time that
he began smoothing his hair and he began allowing his
sideburns to grow which also contributed to his character.
During this time he gained a distinction in a particular
high school competition when he played an encore.
After he finished high school he started a job at a mechanics
shop, this is the moment when his singing career started
to flourish, particularly when he made a song for his mom's
birthday. During that time he made his first recording at
the Memphis Recording Service when recorded his first
songs, That's When Your Heartaches Begin" and "My
Happiness".
The owner of the recording studio himself asked Elvis to
make demos as he was paired up with other local artists.
While he was working at Crown Electric, Elvis started to
make contracts with recording services; it was during this
time that he released some of his songs like Heartbreak
Hotel, I Want You, I love You, I Want You, I Need You, I
love You, and Love Me Tender.
Elvis was known for creating top chart hits, All Shook Up,
I beg of You, One Night, Need Your Love Tonight, Jailhouse
Rock, Teddy Bear, A Big Hunk Of Love, I Feel So Bad, Little
Sister, She's Not You, Crying In The Chapel, In the Ghetto
and Burning Love.
After being a much sought after icon in the public, Elvis
Presley's career never waned through the years. As a matter
of fact it boosted the publics need to find another Elvis
in modern times who might just sound like him.
There are several fans out there still looking up to Elvis
Presley, though the teenagers nowadays may not have the
slightest idea of what he has done for the music industry.
But for the avid fans, he may be dead but his impact and
genre will forever be endured.
Elvis Presley grooves to the rhythm
The rock 'n' roll bomb Elvis Presley is one of the most
evident manifestations that someone could become a national
stunner in a fast phase. How he has emerged from his first
song known as the heartbreak hotel was really astounding,
as it debuted on the top spot of most music charts during
his time. The very secret to this success was his
