Governor Jen Sandlin
The members of the Cumby Area Lions
Club are busy planning their Charter Night
Celebration. It will be on Thursday, November 10, 2016 in the Cumby High Schools Gym
Foyer at 6:00 pm. Cost of the meal will be
$10.00 if you RSVP by October 28,
2016. $15.00 after the 28th. Contact Lion
President Sharon Petty at [email protected] or call her direct at
903-456-6866. Please mark your calendars
and make plans on attending our District's
newest Club's celebration.
Also in the works is the Honey Grove Ladies Lions Club sponsored
by the Windom Gentleman's Lions Club. An informational/
organizational meeting will be held soon. Lion PDG/GMT Nancy
VanAlstine has been busy recruiting new members for the Troup Lions
Club, while I have been recruiting new members for the Bonham Lions
Club. Both Clubs will be strong again. I was told that we couldnt get
new members in Bonham, let alone, young members. Well, The first
time i went out to recruit, I signed up two members in their twenties
and one in her thirties, one in his fifties. The Bonham Club is going
through a complete reorganizational change. Exciting times in the
world of Lionism.
Now I want to ask every Club to get out there and recruit new members. Too many of our Clubs are 'ageing out" and need new, younger
members to eventually take over the reins. To get the 20-40 age groups,
you may have to change the way your club meets. The 20-30 aged
members who have joined the Bonham Lions Club want to meet twice
per month and in the evenings and are making it a family friendly
Club. Bring the kids! Let them learn early what it's like to serve their
Community! Kids growing up in the Lions environment grow up to be
wonderful teens and adults. We have several examples of that in our
District. So very proud of our kids! It is time we quit saying
"That's the way we've always done it"! The world is changing and Lions
need to change with it or get left behind!! We ALL need to do our part
and make District 2-X2 the strongest District in our wonderful State of
Texas.
IT CAN BE DONE!

September was a busy month for Lion Glenda and me, with club and
district events. Our club is winding up the fundraising portion of the Million Pennies Project and preparing for
the Historic Highway 80 Sale in mid-October (14-15). If you haven’t heard about the Million Pennies Project,
the Longview Lions are raising $10,000 for a wheelchair swing for McWhorter Park. This is our Centennial
Legacy Project for the Lions’ 100th anniversary. The Historic Hi-Way 80 Sale is a five state Yard Sale, along
US Highway 80 from Texas to Georgia. We hope to raise more funds for our other projects, which include
scholarships, eye exams and glasses, food for the needy, etc. We’ll be displaying our wares at Sisk Buick,
318 W. Marshall, http://www.siskbuicklongview.com/HoursAndDirections in Longview on Friday, October
14 and Saturday, the 15th.
September is also a big vision screening month, with back to school activities and the Gregg (and Smith) County Fairs, as well as
other towns around the district. Lion Glenda has been busy with scheduling the district-owned Spot machines, which involves the physical
transfer between custodial and screening clubs and reverse transfers after the screening events. While Lion Glenda does most of the
work (including training), I have been able to help with some of the transfers and screenings, too. A tip of the hat to PDGs Becky and Brian Whitenack [lots of hours at the county fair], and PDG Lynn Nacol, our other busy trainer.
Then there was the five day trip to USA-Canada Forum in Omaha, Nebraska in mid-September. As Lion Warren has promised for years, it
was a great experience! This year, PDG Lynn Nacol and Lion Glenda earned their Masters from Lions University. They received their Bachelors last year, which was the first year that the Bachelors could be awarded. Governor Jenn got her Bachelors, this year and I was so
inspired, I doubled up and got both. If you are the slightest little bit interested in learning about Lions, leadership skills, at your own pace
[online] and getting credit for it, too, ask one of us about it…and what’s a poken paw?
Today as I was riding home I thought how wonderful the weather outside felt. Yep autumn
Charles Horn
and fall are a time to slow down and enjoy and
reflect on things. As Lions it is not a slowdown
but gas on the pedal time throttle ahead. We
are in the middle of high school athletics which means we have lots of Lions and Lions Clubs that take part in these as service projects and even
some fund raisers. When serving on a service project for these athletic
events we are giving our support to the community and youth. It is important that the public knows we are doing this as a service. What a great
recruiting tool, especially if we wear our Lions vest to these service projects. It could be an eye opening experience for the parent realizing some of the things that we do. As Lions it might be the push in
the right direction for that parent to consider being a Lion. It also gives the athletes an opportunity to
see Lions in action. This could give them the incentive in the future to become a Lion. Our youth happen to be the future of carrying Lionism forward. As Lions we need to always put our best foot forward
when dealing with our youth. The reason I am talking about new prospective members is that October
is membership growth month, when all clubs want to get new members. Also we still have the remember Texas Campaign still going. For each new member a Lion recruits they will receive an “I Remember Texas” pin. In September I had the opportunity to visit a few clubs for our District Governor Lion
Jenn. What a pleasure it was to see these clubs working hard to recruit new members and also working hard to donate 100% to the District Charities. You still have time to get together slightly worn or
new shoes to donate to our district for a fund raiser. Tape each pair together and have 25 pair per
clear trash bag. These need to be turned in at our next cabinet meeting in November. If you have
shoes that need to be taken, let me know. Until next time – Roar on Lions!

President’s Message
Dear Lion, We recently reached the 100 million people served milestone in the Centennial
Service Challenge. This incredible accomplishment is proof that when Lions join together
for the benefit of humanity, there’s nothing we can’t achieve. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating
this achievement in true Lions style—by renewing your commitment to serving the people who need us
most. The Centennial Celebration is a great opportunity for every Lion to get involved in service. You
can plan a project for the Worldwide Weeks of Service, dedicate a Centennial Community Legacy Project in your community, and continue supporting the Centennial Service Challenge by hosting youth,
vision, hunger and environmental projects. And keep reporting your activities to LCI so we can share
our impact with Lions and the world. I’d like you to take a minute to watch our 100 Million Served video and reflect on the millions of lives changed by your service. Then keep serving to see how high we
can climb!
Very truly yours,
Chancellor Bob CorlewYour International President
