Monday, February 29 Dear Parents, The question box had a hat inside that the children quickly recognized. It very obviously belongs to Dr. Suess! With the birthday of this wonderful author this week, we will use many of his different stories to lead our activities and further our rhyming. Today we used the book One Fish, Two Fish. As I read, they would notice the rhyming words and shout them out to me. Some even “read” along. We made some decoupage fish; some are patterned, some striped. Each student had their own vision in mind. Check them out in the hallway! We introduced the letter Z today. Some of the children noticed that its name also makes its sound. We decided this will be an easy letter to remember. We made the letter Z with yarn. The sensory box is filled with goldfish that the children are putting into “fish bowls” as they practice their counting. Our Bible story this week is about Zacchaeus. I brought some coins to Jesus Time and had the children pay their taxes, just as people of Jesus’ time would have done when a tax collector came visiting. They picked up quickly on the unfairness, as I charged them each different amounts, leaving some children with several coins left and others with none. We learned that this was what Zacchaeus did to the people. But Jesus forgave him. We are learning a song to help us tell the story too! You can find the snack schedule here. We read The Foot Book and identified the different kind of feet noting things that were opposites (tall feet, short feet, skinny feet, fat feet, etc.). We did some estimating together as to how many footsteps it would take to get different places around the room and then took actual measurements with real footprints and clown footprints. Which one took more? Ask your child! Each child made their very own “foot book” today. Mrs. Hofman painted feet (so check between toes in the bathtub tonight!) for footprints. They loved seeing the wrinkles show in the paint and there were quite a few chuckles as well. I traced their shoe which they worked hard to cut out. We worked together to do some different counting activities as they used manipulatives to figure out the length of their foot. This was a great opportunity to work on estimating together and using comparative language. Zippy came to Jesus Time today feeling very mad! His dog had chewed up his favorite stuffed animal. We asked Zippy if he still loved his dog and he said, “Of course!” We talked about mercy and how even preschoolers show mercy to each other. We noted the mercy Jesus showed to Zacchaeus too. In each of those stories, the “owner” went looking for their lost thing, because the love it. Jesus doesn’t want us to be lost either! We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We brainstormed different things that make us happy and how we could make a Grinch smile. Some grinches are out in the hall for you to check out. We are using some different pictures from Dr. Seuss as we work on visual discrimination, looking for differences among like items. We added the letter Z page to our Alphabet Art books with some zipper rubbings. They were amazed at what showed up on the paper! You can find the snack schedule here. Right away the children noticed that they weren’t real animals, rather creatures like Elephant-Cats, Joats, Lunks. These creatures had some similarities to real animals and they were quick to make connections. We created some creatures of their own with Model Magic and wrote some couplet poems, just like Dr. Seuss. The poems are on display out in the hallway. We made letter Zs with bingo dabbers, focusing on making the letter from the top. We watched a short skit about Zacchaeus today. It displayed well Jesus’ mercy and forgiveness given to Zacchaeus. We made connections to how Jesus shows mercy to us too. You can find the snack schedule here. The lunch menu is here See many of you tomorrow! <><, Mrs. Maxfield Friday, March 4 Dear Parents, Where would you eat green eggs and ham? The children decided that it didn’t matter where they were; they weren’t going to eat it, after we read Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs & Ham. They’ve become such good rhymers over the past two weeks. Continue to encourage this at home with simple rhyming games while they are getting dressed, helping you with dinner, driving in the car, etc. They made plates full of green eggs and ham today. Their improved fine motor skills were evident as they cut out their plates and ham. Our favorite combination of glue and shaving cream mixed with a bit of green food coloring made some puffy eggs. We also put a twist on Sam-I-am from the story and turned it to be about them. Using the pattern of the story, they picked out something they would like to eat and thought of where they would like to eat it. During Jesus Time we recalled some of the pieces to the story of Zacchaeus. The money collected, the tree, and even Zacchaeus were not the important parts of the story. There is much, much more! While retelling the story, I folded a piece of paper with each part. At the end, I cut a line up the folder paper. Upon unfolding it, a cross was revealed. (They think I’m a magician. ;) ) Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross are what is important! You can find the snack schedule here.
