WEATHER REMINDER
Delays and closings are always

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017
As we close out another year, we hope you have enjoyed your Senior
Circle membership and are looking forward to what's to come as much
as we are.
In 2016, we added tours and short
trips to our calendar, secured more
local discounts and offered evening
health talks. As we look forward to
2017, we plan to continue expanding
our programs, locations, times and
offerings to better meet your needs.
You can help make our programs even
better by inviting your friends and
neighbors to become members. The
more we can grow our membership
base, the more programs we can bring
to you at a low cost.
And because our main focus is your
health, in 2017, we'll be talking more
about the 21-Day Challenge and
encouraging you to take advantage
of this simple, effective method for
improving your overall health, one habit
at a time. As with most things, the 21Day Challenge works even better when
you have an accountability partner, so
start looking for your partner now!
Give the Gift of
Membership
Don't know what to give that
person on your list who seems to
have everything? A Senior Circle
membership costs just $15 per
person or $27 per couple and is
good for one year from sign-up.
Members may enjoy creative and
social programs, local and national
discounts, in addition to having
access to health and wellness
programs presented by healthcare
professionals and other expert
assistance (i.e. legal and insurance).
Members also have opportunities
to get to know others in the
community and have fun together.
Fill out the membership form on
page 9 or online at SeniorCircle.com.
THE SENIOR CIRCLE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED
NOV. 24-25 AND DEC. 23-27

discounted rate for activities with a
fee and they have access to significant
local and national discounts. Join
today! See page 9 for more details.
Avoid the Stuffing
The turkey might not be the only thing feeling stuffed this holiday season. With
parties, dinners, buffets, and huge helpings looming, don't let the feasting season
eat up your resolve to be healthy.
Holiday Nutrition Tips:
(Source: EatRight.org, "How to Enjoy the Holiday Without the Weight Gain," accessed on
Sept. 15, 2016)
}} Don't skip meals, as this could make you hungrier later.
}} Be sure to eat foods that are high in fiber (fruits, veggies, whole grains)
to help you feel full.
}} Eat your veggies first, and eat slowly.
}} Moderation, moderation, moderation. Enjoy those yummy, special holiday
foods, but only in moderation.
SHELLY LYBARGER
Fort Wayne Senior Circle Coordinator
}} Use smaller plates, bowls and cups to ensure smaller portions, then refrain
from going back for seconds.
}} Wait 10–20 minutes before you go for more. This will give your stomach
time to tell your brain whether you're really still hungry.
Eating healthy is only part of the November/December battle. Don't forget to also
work in a little exercise each day, even if it's just for 10–15 minutes.
Holiday Exercise Tips:
}} Ask family and friends to take a walk around the block with you after dinner.
}} Slip out each morning or evening to walk the dog.
}} Dust off the stationary bike or treadmill and ride or walk while you watch
your favorite holiday shows.

Rehabilitation, St. Joseph and The Orthopedic

21-Day Challenge: Stress
Management
Medicare Counseling
State Health Insurance Assistance Programs, or SHIP, is
a free, unbiased counseling program provided by the
Indiana Department of Insurance. State-certified volunteer
counselors help people with Medicare, Medicare Supplement
Insurance, Medicare Advantage, Medical Part D, prescription
coverage and long-term financing options.
• Appointments available on Mondays and Fridays,
through Dec. 5, 8:30 a.m.– 2 p.m.
One of the six key health areas in the 21-Day Challenge
is stress management. The holidays can be a very
stressful time of year for many reasons, including a full
schedule, financial pressure, missing deceased loved
ones, the cold weather with limited sun and just trying
to please family and friends. Have the mindset that you
will be kind to yourself this season.
Here are some tips to help manage your stress:
}} Take time for yourself. Relax, focus and rejuvenate
10–20 minutes each day or two hours each week
(i.e. over coffee, while walking the dog, in the bath/
shower, in the evening after others go to bed).
• Appointment required
Get Grandkid Ready
Are you welcoming a new grandbaby to the family? You can
discover the latest about safe sleep, car seat safety, home
safety, SIDS and shaken baby syndrome in this free refresher
class. In addition, a basic American Heart Association noncertification CPR course provides a review of CPR techniques
and choking information for infants up to one year of age.
}} Keep a gratitude journal. Every day before going to
bed, jot down three things that you are thankful for.
This exercise has proven to lift spirits.
• Tuesday, Nov. 1, 5:30–8 p.m.
}} Prayer, faith or an attitude of trust can all help.
• Dupont Hospital campus, Dupont Resource Center,
2514 building, Suite 210
If you want to reduce stress, consider choosing this as
an area of focus for your next 21‑Day Challenge.
• Register online at TheDupontDifference.com/classes
or call (260) 416-3042.
A Unique Gift
}} Un-trouble your mind. Practice a relaxation
technique. Write out what you're concerned about
with an action plan to do the next day.
Need support to manage stress? We can help.

21-Day Challenge: Exercise
Exercise is one of the six key health areas in the 21-Day
Challenge. Consider choosing this as your area of focus
for the next 21 days.
November and December tend to be chilly, busy
months—making it easy to discard your regular
routines. Remember that exercise can help with stress
management, weight control and also contribute to a
positive outlook—all important things this time of year.
Even 10–15 minutes of exercise per day can produce
good health benefits. Take advantage of free indoor
walking locations, gyms, pools and classes. Can't get
out of the house? Watch for sales and consider treating
yourself with a treadmill or stationary bike.
• Rehabilitation Hospital, Lutheran Hospital campus,
7970 W. Jefferson Blvd.
Tai Chi
Try Tai Chi, a low-impact, relaxing form of exercise.

Choose one key
health area:
Need a refresher on the 21-Day Challenge? It's a simple concept that can have far-reaching
results. Here are the basics.
Many diseases and conditions share common risk factors. Rather than overwhelming yourself
by trying to change too many things at once, focus on one thing at a time for greater, longterm impact. And since it takes just 21 days to form a habit, why not make it a good one?
Focus on one of the six key health areas listed to the right for 21 days, then move on to
another area. By reducing common risk factors one habit at a time, you'll be on your way
to better health.
Finish the year strong. Pick 21 days during November and December and challenge yourself.
Look for tips in this issue of Circle News.
PICK UP YOUR FREE PACKET
