Dear Friends of Hammer,
F
or Bruce Pettyjohn, independence means
living in a Hammer Home.
Bruce lives with a developmental disability. He lived with his
parents until he moved to Hammer’s Jersey home in 2004 at the
age of 43. Bruce was asked recently what he likes about living
at Jersey. He sat a bit taller in his chair and stated with pride:
“Independence.”
Your financial contribution will help us to provide Bruce with the
support he needs to live life with dignity… to feel independent.
Young Bruce with
his dad, Ralph
“Since coming to Hammer, Bruce
has really thrived,” says Bruce’s sister, Sherri
Johnson. “There’s lots of consistency with staff and in his
daily care. He really needs that. At the same time, they treat
him like an adult.”
When Bruce first moved to Jersey, he was quite anxious.
“Before then he had rarely left his parents’ side,” says Joe
Esposito, Hammer staff member. Jersey’s seasoned staff
Parents, DeEtta and Ralph, with Bruce
members gave Bruce the support he needed to settle into
his new life, to develop confidence and expand his world.
Bruce’s parents are now both deceased. His sister and her ‌family
continue to be very involved in his life but his housemates and
staff have become his “Hammer Family.”
With Hammer’s support, Bruce has made
some remarkable changes. He has a job now and
a checking account. He recently took a trip to New York with
Hammer Travel and enjoyed sightseeing, going to the Today
Show and seeing The Lion King on Broadway.

Bruce needs stability to maintain his
hard-won independence. The reality is there is a
lot of uncertainty in government funding for people who live
with disabilities. Increasingly, Hammer relies on support from
foundations, corporations and individuals like you to keep our
services strong.
Your contribution is critically needed to ensure Bruce and all
the people we serve continue to receive the stable support and
compassionate care they need to live life independently.

Our goal is $830,000
We need $298,000 to meet that goal.
Your gift will help Bruce and all the 274 individuals we serve in
our residential programs to continue to lead full and satisfying lives.
