Incredible ‘internal sunscreen’
to protect you this summer
By Dr David Pierotti
We all know one of the steps to take to protect against sun burn is to apply
sunscreen. But what if we could have an internal cellular protection as well?
If you are already taking a
high-quality supplement of
Krill Oil then guess what,
you’re already reaping
some of the benefits of it’s
remarkable
little
red
pigment - Astaxanthin.
The rule still applies that we absolutely do NOT want
to get to the point of having burnt skin. There are
tremendous benefits from getting sunshine, but they
go straight out the window if we get to the level of
being burnt.
Astaxanthin is naturally occurring in krill, and it’s just
one of the many reasons why I strongly support the
use of krill over fish oil.
Option 1: cover up with clothes and receive zero
Vitamin D
To avoid sunburn:
Option 2: apply sunscreen (potentially cancer-causing
chemicals) and receive zero vitamin D
So how can this little red-coloured biochemical help
you this summer?
Option 3: apply natural safe sunscreen and receive
zero vitamin D
The answer lies in the fact that Astaxanthin works as
one of natures most-powerful anti-oxidants. An antioxidant is a naturally occurring substance that
neutralizes the effect of damaging ‘oxygen free radicals’.
Option 4: avoid the sun and receive zero vitamin D
Option 5: spend enough time in the sun in
the middle of the day that your skin begins
to turn a faint shade of pink, apply natural
sunscreen and/or clothes slightly before
this point or seek shade and take a daily
dose of astaxanthin as a supplement to
further protect from burning while still
receiving vitamin D.
It’s also been shown to be a strong anti-inflammatory
in a range of inflammatory conditions (other
noteworthy problems which it helps include osteoarthritis). Critical point: sunburn is inflamed
and free-radical-damaged skin.
Better than sunscreen?
The message is starting to get out there now that we
all need a healthy daily dose of vitamin D, preferably
from the sun. But there is still the issue of sunburn if
the time in the sun is too high.
Is this really a tough choice?

Miracle Algae
the next morning all signs of redness had disappeared
and all that was left was a lovely brown tan.
This amazing pigment first developed in a particular
form of algae. This algae is frequently subject to
periods of intense sunshine due to it’s water
ecosystem drying up, thereby removing its protection
from the sun. So as a remarkable defense mechanism,
it developed a protective pigment (Astaxanthin) that
blocks the harmful effects of the sun. Then, krill come
along and eat the algae, then we eat the krill and
voila, we have protection from the sun too!
Remember that if it is a tan that you are looking for, it
is not necessary to get to the point of burning to
achieve this. If your skin is going to react to UV
radiation by increasing melanin and giving you a tan
coloured skin, then it should be possible simply by
getting adequate exposure - well before the point of
the burn.
So please remember the basics, and if you want some
added protection this summer, I highly recommend
getting some Astaxanthin for yourself and your loved
ones.
The magic of nature at work.
Suggestions this summer
There are numerous other wellness-promoting
benefits to Astaxanthin which I have written about
previously. Please visit our website for the full range
of past articles.
As I previously alluded to, if you’re already taking
krill, then you’re no doubt receiving some of
Astaxanthin’s huge benefits already. However each
individual is different and will require varying amounts
of the phytonutrient to have protection from UV
radiation.

Personally, If I just take one or two krill per day
(600-1200mcg Astaxanthin) then i’m not very well
protected from sunburn. But if I take 4000-12000mcg
per day then I can handle much more time in the
beautiful summer sun.
I also run an online community designed to inspire
and empower individuals to become the change they
want to see in their own lives. Please head over there
and check out my daily messages of love and wisdom.
This takes a bit of experimentation and tinkering, but
the general recommendation is this:

• begin by taking 8-12mg (8000mcg) of astaxanthin
per day for the first 30 days then it can be dropped
to 4mg per day as a maintenance dose.

Please understand that just by taking Astaxanthin you
are not somehow immune to ever being burnt again.
That’s not how it works!
It works more like a mild sunscreen. It lengthens the
time you can spend in the sun. But also, it works to
dramatically increase healing time. So if you’re
unfortunate enough to get a little burnt, then you’ll
notice the bounce back will be much quicker, and the
chances of pealing skin are significantly reduced.
Patients have remarked to me that if they get burnt
they wont feel the burn as sensitive or painful skin,
but perhaps only notice some redness. Or if it usually
takes 5-7 days for a sunburn to heal they’ll find that
they’re back to normal within 2 days.
My personal experience is similar. I accidentally got a
little red while out in the sun over Christmas and by
