LIVELINESS Halen Residential Complex Atelier 5 Halen, CZ, 1961 “We transformed the concept of Le Corbusier’s vertical residential block, the Unité d’Habitation, into a horizontal scheme.” Atelier 5 The design of this self-contained structure of 81 terraced houses, with small front gardens, communal kindergarten, swimming-pool, restaurant, shops, underground garage and central heating plant , combined a high quality of life with a high density of residents. This leads to a degree of spatial activity within the community. The dwellings have gardens in front and rear which connects adjecent dwellings with each other and create a ‘collective’ garden to enforce the communal feeling. references: _ http://www.atelier5.ch/de/Arbeiten/ _ http://housingprototypes.org/project?File_ No=CH008 _ http://www.oikodomos.org/caserepository/ index.php/casestudies/view/25 TK9 - Learning activity 56 OIKONET elective 2014 Faculty of Architecture - KU Leuven www.oikonet.org - www.twitter.com ThresholdMatters Olivier De Greef
