MCS Semi-annual Report - Spring 2016

Faculty, Staff and
Trustees Honored
at the Inaugural
Event in the
Eddie & Carol Lee
Student Life
Center
The annual Appreciation Dinner honoring the
Faculty, Staff and Board of Trustees of Midland Christian
School was held Tuesday, April 26th, in the new Eddie and
Carol Lee Student Life Center. This was the first event held
in the Student Life Center since Midland Christian was
granted occupancy by the city of Midland. This occasion brought
together staff members and spouses, as well as Board Members and
their spouses, for the purpose of expressing appreciation and presenting
service awards. We at MCS are blessed with numerous staff and board
members that have dedicated many years to our beloved school, which we
believe enhances the family atmosphere that so many covet in the education of their
children. The evening was full of fellowship and recognition of outstanding service to Midland Christian School. Everyone was in
awe of the new Student Life Center. It is a state of the art cafeteria and will be an awesome place for our children to worship God.

The Hawaiian Luau Auction and Dinner
was a huge success again this year!! A total of
$200,000.00 was raised on February 19th after months
of preparation by a dedicated committee and generous
donors. This fun evening, full of delicious food, fellowship and bidding wars, was attended by over 450 people
that all had one thing in common—a love for Midland
Christian School and the desire to support the ministry
that takes place every day at our beloved institution.
There were so many people that gave of their time
and resources to ensure the success of this event. A group
of ladies met on a regular basis, beginning in September,
to plan every detail of the auction. Thank you so much
to Lacey Adams, Tammy Bales, Amy Hopkins,
Melissa Kindel, Courtnee McHugh, Jonelle Sears and
Pam Tiffin. This committee was so much fun to work
with! Their love for MCS was proven over and over
by their hard work and enthusiasm. D’Nese Fowler,
Patty Lowery, Celeste Pruitt and Becky Suarez did an
outstanding job decorating for this tropical evening. A
special thank you goes to Johnny and Melissa Midkiff
and Martin and Stacey Garcia for donating and preparing a delicious barbecue dinner enjoyed by all! One of
the highlights of the evening was our auctioneer, Mark
Machen, who did an outstanding job! Thank you to
each of these for donating their time and services!
We cannot report about the auction without thanking all of our donors. Each gift, no matter how large
or small, was the key factor in the success of this event.
Thank you doesn’t even begin to express our gratitude
for your generosity!
And last, but surely not least, thank you to everyone
that made it a priority to come to the auction and
support Midland Christian!! Without your presence
and generous bidding this event would not be possible.
• We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our generous donors •

The 34th annual Mustang Run was held
March 16th on Gordon Awtry Field on a beautiful
spring day. This is an essential fund raiser and our
students showed their commitment to Midland
Christian by doing their best to send out as many
sponsor forms as possible and running lap after
lap to raise money for many different student
activities through the year. This year we received
over $135,000 in cash and pledges!
We want to thank everyone that made this
race such a great success. Thank you to the students that worked hard filling out sponsor sheets
and running laps. Thank you to the sponsors
who were so generous with their donations and
pledges. Thank you to the many volunteers that
helped count laps the day of the run. A very
special thank you to Sandra Hull for the countless hours she spent organizing the Run and
making sure every detail was covered to assure
that this fund raiser was a great success!!

Service Day at Midland Christian was
held on Wednesday, April 27th. It was a
day devoted to serving others as all of our
junior high and high school students went
throughout the Midland/Odessa area
performing acts of community service.
Thank you to Ryan Rampton and Kathi
Hutton for organizing this amazing day.
The following is a report from these two
about what the day looked like to them:
“As the MCS bus pulls up to a beaten
and worn house, the students disembark
to see paint peeling and fading. A sight
that, instead of saddening the students,
excites and invigorates them. In a flash
you see students scraping, painting, doing
yard work, picking up trash, and conversing with the thankful and relieved owner.
Across town at the local bowling alley,
students fill the lanes. These students
interact with, and show love to, kids with
special needs. Everyone is having a blast
and creating memories they will never
forget. In Odessa, students are packing
boxes with supplies that will reach a soldier
overseas. These students pack each box
with care knowing that it will bless the
man or woman that receives it. Teachers
and students alike start this day with clean
fresh clothes and faces, and return covered
with dirt and paint stains. They are sunburned and tired, but richly blessed.
These are just a snapshot of the service
projects that took place on Midland
Christian’s annual service day. Every year,
7-12th graders take a full day to serve the
community in various ways. They set
out with their Bible class and bless local
ministries in our community. Service
day began in 2008 and was borne out
of a desire to instill in students a servant
heart and to further Midland Christian’s
commitment to be salt and light in the
Permian Basin. Since its inception, it
has grown to be a day that teachers and
students get to see each other in a different setting from the normal school day. It
is a day where we are all servants working
to bless others that we may never see, but
are loved by God.”

MCS teachers, Wil and Jenny Pippin
have a passion for the people, especially
the children of Zambia. Every summer
for over 20 years this dedicated Christian
couple has traveled half way around the
world to share the love of Jesus Christ.
This year their dreams included a group
of students from Midland Christian. The
following was written by Jenny Pippin
about this experience:
“Over Spring Break, eleven high
school students (along with sponsors Wil
and Jenny) set out for Zambia, Africa on
the first MCS mission trip. As soon as
their feet hit African soil, these students
opened up their hearts and became the
hands and feet of Jesus for some of the
forgotten children of Zambia.
Namwianga Mission is located in the
Southern Province of Zambia and is one
of the poorest regions of the country. Villages dot the miles and miles of farm land.
This area has been in a severe drought for
several years. Even though it was the rainy
season while the group was there, the rain
was still too little, too late.
Each day, the group made the rough,
bouncy trip out to a village school. Each
student had small groups of students that
they tutored in math and reading. Some
children walk over a mile each day to go
to school. Many of these children show
up with shoes that have so many holes
their toes stick out, or they come hoping
to find a meal for the day.
In the afternoons, each MCS student
paired up with a child from the Haven
and Eric’s House (two orphanages at
Namwianga) and planted tomatoes, read
books and played games. More importantly, they built special bonds with the
Zambian children.
On the weekend, the MCS group
visited Simikakata, a community for the
blind and disabled. They provided food
relief to the families and helped clean up
around their homes. When it was time to
go, several members of the village brought
a dozen ears of corn as a gift to our students. The poorest of the poor gave out
of what little they had to show appreciation for what had been done for them.
On Sunday, students were able to
worship in a village church and after-
campus news
wards experienced fun cultural activities,
including a band playing all homemade
instruments.
The trip ended with a short safari
trip to see some of God’s greatest creations in their natural habitat. They also
viewed Victoria Falls, one of the Natural
Wonders of the World.
These eleven MCS students left a
piece of their hearts in Zambia. Their
lives will be forever changed and they
have been inspired to do great things for
the least of those in God’s Kingdom.”
Our students were asked to describe
their experience and asked what impacted them the most. Also included
are a couple of quotes from parents of
the students that were a part of this life
changing event:
Sophomore Lauren Hanna: “This
trip has taught me that these kids have
life a lot harder than I do but they are so
much happier and now I feel that I am
more grateful for things.”
Junior Jake Weathers: “It made me
more thankful for stuff I don’t usually
think about like shoes and getting to eat
every day”
Sophomore Emily Kilgore: “My heart
will forever be in Zambia and I will never
forget my experience there.”
Junior Mitchell Cochran: “I experienced joy in face of deprivation and
gratitude in the face of poverty. Now I
hope I can bring back the unconditional
joy the people of Zambia had and apply it
9
to my life.”
Junior Chase Van Riper: “I wouldn’t
have traded this opportunity for anything
else.”
Parent Stacy Kilgore: “Emily’s mission trip experience was life changing.
She fell in love with the Zambian people
she was able to work with. She is ready to
go back and would go today if she could.”
Parent Heather Harris: “The Pippins
arranged the trip so that the students were
able to work in a range of different ministries. Tristan returned home rejuvenated
in life, humbled by the circumstances of
other humans’ lives compared to his own,
and passionate for acting as the hands and
feet of God.”

This year, the Fine Arts Department
put on the first musical production in
the history of Midland Christian School.
“Seussical the Musical” consisted of 75
students, cast and crew, from fifth grade
through twelfth grade. The show was a
full length musical consisting of singing, acting and dancing. It took two full
months to rehearse and put it all together. The show was a wonderful example
of the God-given talents the students at
MCS have been blessed with.
Many hours of preparation were put
into making this the great success it was.
Thank you to Joe Jung, MCS Choir
Director, Ember Rydell, MCS Theatre
Director and Christie Hamilton, MCS
Elementary Director, for the many long
hours they dedicated to this production.
Also, a special thank you to Mark Dean
and his Vocational Tech Class, Jena McClaine, Paula Gower and many parents
& students for working tirelessly on the
set to make Whoville come alive on the
McGraw Event Center stage. It was a
magical night of fun and entertainment
and we look forward to the 2017 Spring
Musical Production!
“Pave the way” campaign continues
We are so excited about the new Eddie
& Carol Lee Student Life Center! The
entrance, which is on the north end of
the building, has a very special pathway
containing pavers that will leave a legacy
for many years to come. The “Pave the
Way” phase of the Imagine Campaign
was commissioned by the Board of
Trustees as a way for donors to have the
opportunity to honor a loved one or a special person from MCS that has impacted
a child’s life in a positive way while giving
to the school through the purchase of an
engraved paver. These pavers will continue to be available with an order being
placed this summer. There are two levels –
a Large Rectangle that has three available
lines of text (fifteen characters each line
which includes any spaces, commas, etc.)
for a $250 donation or a Giant paver that
has six available lines of text (fifteen characters each line also) for a $1,000 donation. If you haven’t taken the opportunity
to view these pavers, please stop by and
see how you might honor someone special
in your life. All orders need be placed by
June 24, 2016.
