From the Parish Priest
Welcome to Fr Ted Miller. I am attending my niece’s confirmation and shall be back within the blink of an eye!
I hope you have noticed the great progress being made on our new parish church. Please continue to keep the
project and all those working on it in your prayers. Remember the psalmist’s words: ‘If the Lord does not build
the house, then in vain do the builders labour.’
Over many weeks we have had excerpts from Pope Francis’ Amoris Laetitia and Laudato Si’. This week’ excerpt
from the latter will chime I think with many of us who have observed or perhaps been involved in politics – shorttermism (is that a neologism?) The Pope calls on our politicians to be courageous and selfless so as to work for
the greater good. Do read the passage.
The excerpt from Amoris Laetitia does not teach us anything new though it may come as a surprise to some.
The ministers of the sacrament of marriage are the couple. The priest is there to assist and witness. The couple
minister the sacrament to one another. People are sometimes surprised that the priest does not say ‘I now
pronounce you husband and wife.’ It is not part of the marriage ritual because the couple pronounce each other
husband and wife!
Prayer Intentions
Pope’s General Intentions That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade,
which victimizes so many innocent people.

Sr Cecilia Argoti Narvaez who was kidnapped on 7 February from her community in Mali, for Asia Bibi whose
facing the death penalty for blasphemy in Pakistan; for Fr Tom Uzhunnalil SDB who was kidnapped by the

confirming our parishioners. Please be aware that every pew at the Saturday evening Mass has been allocated
to a candidate’s family!
Pope Francis calls us to pray for an end to the arms trade. Here is a prayer you can say to join yourself with
the Holy Father’s June intentions:
Lord, our Father
the beautiful and harmonious world
that you have created for your children
has strayed so far from your dream.
Wars and divisions are still present,
and are often caused and maintained only because of money.
The arms trade is one of the main reasons for the prolongation
of these wars, so often supported by the rulers themselves.
Lord, touch the hearts of the rulers, blinded by the arms trade,
and may they consider the consequences of their greed:
the destruction and death of so many innocents.
Convert our hearts to the peace and good of every human being.
Praying today’s Psalm
You are blest, Lord God of our fathers.
Blest your glorious holy name.
You are blest in the temple of your glory.
You are blest on the throne of your kingdom
You are blest who gaze into the depths.
You are blest in the firmament of heaven
Today’s Scripture
‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may
have eternal life. No one who believes in him will be
condemned’

Laudato Si’ (181)
Here, continuity is essential, because policies related to climate change and environmental protection cannot be
altered with every change of government. Results take time and demand immediate outlays which may not
produce tangible effects within any one government’s term. That is why, in the absence of pressure from the
public and from civic institutions, political authorities will always be reluctant to intervene, all the more when
urgent needs must be met. To take up these responsibilities and the costs they entail, politicians will inevitably
clash with the mindset of short-term gain and results which dominates present-day economics and politics. But if
they are courageous, they will attest to their God-given dignity and leave behind a testimony of selfless
responsibility. A healthy politics is sorely needed, capable of reforming and coordinating institutions, promoting
best practices and overcoming undue pressure and bureaucratic inertia. It should be added, though, that even
the best mechanisms can break down when there are no worthy goals and values, or a genuine and profound
humanism to serve as the basis of a noble and generous society.
Amoris Laetitia (75a)
In the Church’s Latin tradition, the ministers of the sacrament of marriage are the man and the woman who
marry; by manifesting their consent and expressing it physically, they receive a great gift. Their consent and
their bodily union are the divinely appointed means whereby they become “one flesh”. By their baptismal
consecration, they were enabled to join in marriage as the Lord’s ministers and thus to respond to God’s call.

ew Church Update
The roof on the main structure has gone up and it is so heart warming to see it all taking shape. You
may take a stroll down after Mass and see the progress of the church building. The work should be
completed before December 2017. If you would like to donate towards the fit out of the church, a list of
specific items will be available very soon. Please do contact Fr Sean at the parish office. Information and pics
are online at attadale.org.
