•  Student-­‐centered learning environments begin with the learner and put students' needs and preferences front and center. •  Transforming a classroom into a student-­‐centered learning environment means changing the way teaching happens both in the classroom and at home. One way to make this transiBon is to use the FLIPPED CLASSROOM. The Flipped Classroom
The Flipped Classroom IS: • 
A means to INCREASE interacBon and personalized contact 6me between students and teachers • 
An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning • 
A classroom where the teacher is not the "sage on the stage,” but the "guide on the side” • 
• 
A blending of direct instrucBon with construcBvist learning • 
• 
• 
A classroom where students who are absent due to illness or extra-­‐
curricular acBviBes such as athleBcs or field-­‐trips, don't get leR behind A class where content is permanently archived for review or remediaBon A class where all students are engaged in their learning A place where all students can get a personalized educaBon The Flipped Classroom
The Flipped Classroom is NOT: • 
A synonym for online videos. When most people hear about the flipped class all they think about are the videos. It is the interacBon and the meaningful learning acBviBes that occur during the face-­‐to-­‐face Bme that is most important. •

At Home: Flipped Math Lesson Example: Flipped Choice Systems of EquaBons In Class the Next Day: • 
1) At the start of the lesson think individually about the quesBons posed in the task • 
2) Next, work in small groups to produce a collaboraBve soluBon to the Baseball Jerseys task in the form of a poster • 
3) In the same small groups, evaluate and comment on sample responses, idenBfy the strengths and weaknesses in these responses and compare them with your own work • 
4) We will then have a whole-­‐class discussion comparing and evaluaBng the strategies seen and used • 
5) Finally, spend ten minutes reflecBng on your work and what you have learned The Flipped Classroom - ELA
At Home: Flipped ELA Lesson Example: Flipped Choice Sentence Structure In Class the Next Day: Students spend Bme in pairs analyzing a partner’s essay for sentence structure variety. Armed with the knowledge of the different structures, they are more able to ensure that the essays feature a variety of sentence structures.
