Andrew Sav was a friend of the Filmer family from Stanthorpe days. Before he
recently died he had written a book entitled Walking Home on his experiences in
a walk from Cairns in North Queensland to Stanthorpe, a distance of around 2000
kilometres.
This 2000 WALK as it became known helped him to reconnect to Australia after
many years living and working overseas but was primarily focussed on drawing
attention to the nearly 2000 languages that do not yet have any part of God’s
Word translated.
Apart from being a great read about a wild adventure the book challenges the
reader regarding the need for Bible translation.
The book is on sale at a special discount price for TMPC of $15 per copy with all
proceeds going to the work of Bible translation.

CelebraƟng Our Heritage: The 500th Anniversary of the Birth of the Protestant ReformaƟon
2017 is a special year for all Christians, especially Protestants, because this year marks the 500th year anniversary of the
beginning of the Protestant Reformation. It was on October 31, 1517 that Martin Luther nailed a series of questions and
objections to Roman Catholic doctrines and practices--his so-called--'Ninety-Five Theses'--to the door of the castle church
in Wittenburg, Germany, where Luther was a theology professor and pastor. Of course, the Protestant Reformation was
the driving religious force behind the creation and development of the modern world. But for Christians, the significance of
Luther's contribution lies in the recovery of core features of the Christian gospel.
In his Ninety-Five Theses, Luther objected to several doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic church. Principally,
Luther objected to the church's practice of 'selling indulgences,' or the notion that one could exchange money in order to
reduce the punishments that one would receive from God, for sins committed in this life. Most contemporary Christians
familiar with Martin Luther rightly highlight his recovery of the scriptural doctrine of justification by faith alone: namely, that
believers are declared righteous before God because they receive the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, which they
embrace in repentance and consequently, through a living faith characterised by love and good works.
While Luther intended his theses to ignite academic debate within the church, its subsequent publication by others
throughout Germany, helped spread the birth of a popular religious revolution known as the Protestant Reformation.
The Reformation spread throughout Europe through the efforts of others, such as Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger
(Switzerland), Thomas Cramner (England), Martin Bucer (Germany), John Knox (Scotland) and many others.
Though our church, as a Presbyterian body, traces its historical roots to the Reformed tradition--more closely associated
with John Calvin than with Luther--Calvin is well-known for his indebtedness to Luther. Additionally, our denomination-Presbyterian Church of Queensland--lists, among its basic theological distinctives, the 'Five Solas of the Reformation.' The
Five Solas were not original to Luther or any other of the first-generation Reformers (so-called 'Magisterial Reformers'), but
instead represent a theological summary--devised in the 20th century--of key teachings of the Protestant Reformation. Our
denomination acknowledges the seminal importance of this summary when it describes the key features of our profession
of faith in the terms of the Five Solas, which are:
(1) Sola Scriptura [i.e.,'by Scripture alone']: that the Scriptures alone are the final and infallibly sufficient rule of
interpretation in matters concerning salvation;
This means that neither individual religious experience or church tradition are authoritative for determining either the
content and meaning of Christian doctrine and life. Succinctly, the Bible is the source for learning about how to be
made right with God and the BIble itself determines what it intends to communicate about those matters. Scripture
alone reveals what is necessary for salvation and, in this regard, Scripture is its own interpreter.
(2) Sola Fide [i.e., 'by faith alone']: that Christ's righteousness, sufficient for complete salvation, is imputed completely
through the instrument of faith, which is itself a gift from God;
This means that neither individual works of Christian obedience (e.g., prayers, tithes, charity, etc) nor 'faith plus these
works' are the basis for receiving salvation. Instead, it is only through faith that we receive all of the benefits of
Salvation because of the integrity of the Object of our faith--Christ--and not even because of the amount or quality of
our faith.
(3) Sola Gratia [i.e., 'by grace alone']: that salvation comes through grace alone (unmerited favour), and not by human
works;
This means that salvation is entirely a gift of God. The grace by which we receive salvation manifests itself as Christ's
righteousness being credited to our account and not because grace was infused into our hearts in a manner
that creates change in our lives nor because we cooperated with God's grace to achieve salvation.
(4) Solus Christus [i.e., 'by Christ alone']: that Christ--not the priesthood--is alone the mediator between God and man;
This means that Christ alone creates our access to God. In order to pray to God, to be heard by God, to receive the
graces of salvation (including baptism and Lord's Supper), Jesus Christ is the only mediator we need. And while not
every Christian is or can be a minister, in the formal sense, every Christian is a priest inasmuch as they have access to
the presence of God, can (and must!) offer their lives as a sacrifice to God, and they receive God Himself as their
possession in eternal life.
(5) Sola Deo gloria [i.e., 'glory to God alone']: that to God belongs the glory, for all things but especially, for salvation in
Christ.
This means that glory--or, appreciation, worship, adulation, praise, etc--can not and should not be rendered or
attributed to anyone but God. Not to Mary. Not to the angels. And not to the saints. As was common in the
Roman Catholic Church.
Continued.......
Continued.......
As we shall see, the themes of the Protestant Reformation--in both the Lutheran and Reformed traditions--continue to be
relevant for contemporary Christians in Australia. Thus, throughout the year, I will be writing a short article each month to
highlight some of the features of our Protestant heritage. As we proceed in this 500th anniversary of the Protestant
Reformation, we will explore in greater detail the Five Solas, as well as the defining features of the history of our
tradition, specifically with the purpose of gaining a better understanding and appreciation for the Protestant Reformation
in the recovery of the essential characteristics of the Christian gospel.

PERSECUTED
CHRISTIANS
Germany
In one of the recent magazines of Israel My Glory, they reported that thousands of Christians, (it
has been estimated that number to be about 40,000), who fled to Germany from Islamic countries
for safety and religious freedom, now face violence, harassment, and death threats for their faith
from Muslim refugees in Germany’s asylum camps. The forms of abuse can be verbal insults,
physical assaults (sometimes multiple attacks can occur) and death threats against themselves
and their families. Some of the refugees have said that even the security guards harass them for
their faith.
Most of the Christians in the camps are converts from Islam who have escaped Iraq, Syria, and
Afghanistan. They fled to Germany expecting to find safety and religious freedom. Sadly, they
are finding more and more that they are in as much danger from radical Muslims in Europe as
they were in their home countries. A Christian from Iran told reporters she must conduct her Bible
studies in secret for fear of persecution because if they find out, she will be fair game.
 Pray for these refugees that our Lord would sustain them physically, mentally, emotionally and
spiritually.
 Pray that the German government would place Christians in separate camps and hire more
non-Muslim security guards.
 Pray for justice and protection and for a Safe Haven for them where they can find freedom and
security.
 Pray that the government would deport immigrants who persecute Christians.
Hungary
Barnabas Fund has reported that in September 2016 Hungary created a new government
department whose purpose is to help persecuted Christians. This follows years of covert help by
the Hungarian government for Christians in the Middle East. One of the speakers for the
government, Eduard von Habsburg, has explained that one aim of going public was to set an
example to other nations in Europe. “Somehow the idea of defending Christians has acquired a
bad taste in Europe, as if it means excluding other people” he said.
Pray that other European nations will indeed be inspired by Hungary’s example to help Christians
suffering because of their faith.

Tamborine Mountain Community Christmas Event
Julie Eotvos has extended an invitation to the churches of Tamborine Mountain to participate together
in presenting a large scale Christmas event, aptly named The Tamborine Mountain Community Christmas
Event, as an outreach to both the local and wider community. We believe this event will not only serve as
an outreach, but that it will also unite our community as it brings to life the true meaning of Christmas and its
message; something that very sadly, is gradually being eroded by present popular culture and current belief
systems.
This Christmas event comprises three integral parts:
The Bethlehem Trail: This is where history will be recreated as the Convention Centre grounds are
transformed into the streets of Bethlehem where the Christmas story, as foretold in the Gospels, will be
re enacted so that the audience may witness the events that led up to the birth of Jesus Christ.
Carols by Candlelight: The Bethlehem Trail will culminate in a ‘Carols by Candlelight’ style gala concert
including performances by local and celebrity guest artists. The Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra will return
and combine once again with The Tamborine Mountain Orchestra, the Tamborine Mountain Dance Academy
AND our schools to make this a truly excellent cultural event. The Chamber of Commerce are also supportive
of this event and have been assisting with it’s promotion.
Food Stalls/soup kitchen and Secret Pantry there will also be food stalls - set up in a similar way to how the
Day of Thanks operated along with soup kitchen and Secret Pantry, to assist and provide much needed relief
to those in our community that are struggling to make ends meet. It also plans to support, where possible,
certain charitable organisations.
The Steering Committee for this event will also be making applications for various government grants, but will
be seeking sponsorship and donations.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
 We need actors, singers, musicians, AND animals.
 We will need caterers, people to bake cakes and or savouries etc, volunteers to man stalls, guides/
attendants, set up/pack down etc.
 Advertising/distributing flyers, word of mouth and so on.
To give you a better idea of what help is needed, or in what ways you can be involved, we are having an
Information Evening on the 14th February commencing at 7pm
out at the Convention Centre Panorama Homestead on Beacon Road.
Supper will be provided. If you are interested in attending and being a part of this amazing event please let
either Julie 0458 005 989 or Karen Partridge 0407 762 098 know by the 11th Feb (for catering purposes).

Prayer for the Suffering Church
God of all compassion, Visit Your suffering people. In the time of their troubles, Let them not be dismayed.
In their oppression, Let them not be destroyed. In their anxiety, Let them not lose hope.
In their alienation and wandering, Be their identity and home.
“For where two or three are gathered in my
name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Matthew 18:20
