We appreciate your time availability and now we would like to tell you more about this study. You have participated in an experimental study conducted by the PhD student Marco A. F. Araujo ([email protected]) at the Department of Political Science at University of Florida. The purpose of this study is strictly scientific. The researcher is not affiliated in any way with any organization other than University of Florida. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of equality versus differentiation frames on public opinion about health care and civil rights. Frame effects can be used to induce individuals to take some opinions as more important than others, when forming their own opinion about a public issue. You were randomly assigned to one the following seven groups of news frames: GROUP 1 - received no news article; GROUP 2 - received a news article on health care, emphasizing that considerations of equality are more important than considerations of differentiation when deciding on how to deal with health care; GROUP 3 received a news article on health care, emphasizing that considerations of differentiation are more important than considerations of equality when deciding on how to deal with the health care; GROUP 4 - received a news article on health care, emphasizing both considerations of equality and differentiation on how to deal with health care; GROUP 5 - received a news article on citizens` civil rights, emphasizing that considerations of equality are more important than considerations of differentiation when deciding on how to deal with privacy; GROUP 6 - received a news article on citizens` civil rights, emphasizing that considerations of differentiation are more important than considerations of equality when deciding on how to deal with privacy; GROUP 7 - received a news article on citizens` civil rights, emphasizing both considerations of equality and differentiation on how to deal with privacy. With respect to health care, our expectation is that those assigned to group 2 were more likely to answer favorably to support public health care when compared to those in groups 1, 3, and 4. Those assigned to group 3 were more likely to answer favorably to private health care than those in groups 1, 2, and 4.With respect to civil rights and privacy, our expectation is that those assigned to group 5 were more likely to answer favorably to support equality of privacy when compared to those in groups 1, 6, and 7. Those assigned to group 6 were more likely to answer favorably to differentiation in privacy than those in groups 1, 5, and 7. Finally, it is our expectation that those assigned to group 7 were more likely to answer favorably to equality of privacy than those in group 1.The sensation of having our opinion manipulated is certainly uncomfortable. However, our colleagues who have studied frames found that the higher the individual`s level of schooling, the lesser the individual`s vulnerability to media frame effects. You can also reduce your vulnerability to media frame effects, by increasing your level of familiarity with the issue discussed in the media. We appreciate to have your assistance in improving our knowledge. We 28 Table of Contents -> also hope this experience has become useful for you.
