Standard(s): Standard 1: Motor Skills and Movement Patterns: Students demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Movement Concepts: Students demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Standard 5: Responsible Personal and Social Behavior: Students exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. Objectives: (Psychomotor) TSWBAT demonstrate a Russian twist by holding his/her feet off the ground, twisting from left to right, holding a 6 pound medicine ball, 5 out of 7 times. TSWBAT demonstrate a sit up by holding a medicine ball and pushing him/herself up using only abdominal muscles, 5 out of 7 times. TSWBAT demonstrate a push up by having his/her feet balanced on a medicine ball, chest touching the ground and using bicep, tricep and pectoralis muscles to push body up to locked arm position. TSWBAT demonstrate a squat by resting his/her back on a medicine ball, rolling down the medicine ball until legs are at a 90 degree angle, 5 out of 7 times. (Cognitive) TSWBAT identify that medicine ball exercises improve muscular strength on a written examination, with 80% proficiency. (Affective) TSW work cooperatively with other students of different skill levels 100% of the time. Equipment/Material Needs: 2 large medicine balls, 2 small medicine balls LESSON FOCUS Introduction/Set Induction: Today were going to be doing medicine ball exercises which are activities that improve muscular strength. Does anyone know any activities that improve your muscular strength? (answers) : push ups, squats, etc. Were going to be working in stations today. I am going to break you up into equal groups of three so we can get the most out of this lesson. The first station is going to be Russian twists. (DEMO) Second Station is going to be Push ups. (DEMO) Third Station is going to be Sit ups. (DEMO) Fourth station is going to be Squats. (DEMO) EXPLANATION / DEMONSTRATION Skills Reviewed/Introduced Learning Cues • • • • 1. Russian Twists 2. Med Ball Push-Ups 3. Med Ball Sit-Ups • Feet off the ground Balance on your bottom Hold medicine ball in front of chest Twist to left and touch med. Ball on ground Twist to right and touch ball on ground • • • • • Balance feet on the Medicine Ball Hands on the ground Start with chest on the ground Push body up keeping back straight Use tricep, bicep and pectoral muscles • Lay on back with knees bent and feet on the floor Hold medicine ball in front of chest Push body up using abdominal muscles only • • 4. Med Ball Squat Time 1:30‐ 1:35 • Put large med ball up against wall and rest your back on it • Squat down to have legs at 90 degree angle • While you squat, press your back against ball and roll down the ball INSTRUCTIONAL SCHEDULE Instruction/Practice Activities (with Description) Introduction Review: Bands in the Fitness Center/ Aerobic Conditioning Guided Practice 1:35‐ 1:39 1:39‐ 1:43 1:43‐ 1:47 1:47‐ 1:52 1:52‐ 1:55 Group Activity (Russian Twists) • Every body starts on the ground and one person has the med ball • Start the Russian twists by twisting the med ball to the left and right side of your body • If you don’t have the med ball, just put your hands together and twist your hands to both sides • Give med ball to another group member after 1 minute (Push‐Ups) • All group members start on the ground • First group member starts with the Medicine Ball • First group member starts doing push ups with feet balanced on the med ball • After 1 minute, the medicine ball gets passed to next group member • Med Ball gets passed after every minute (Sit‐Ups) • All group members start on the ground • First group member starts with the medicine ball • Person with the medicine ball holds it in front of their chest • Push their body up holding the medicine ball using abdominal muscles • The person passes the medicine ball to another group member after one minute • Other group members without the medicine ball can be doing sit‐ups without the med ball the rest of the time (Squats) • All group members start against the wall • First member starts with the medicine ball behind their back • Person with the medicine ball squats down to a 90 degree angle • After 1 minute, the medicine ball is passed to another group member • Other group members can do body weight squats the rest of the time Closure Closure: Did everybody have fun today?!
