hristine and I have noticed that recently it has
become much more difficult to spend quality time
together. I assure you that it is not because our love
has diminished or because our desire to spend time
together has lessened. The reason it is difficult to
spend quality time together is because we are parents of Everett (a wonderful 1 year old) and Christine
is pregnant with our second son. In other words, we
are busy! The free time we used to have for dates,
day trips, and weekend “get-aways” is now largely
consumed with diaper changing, toddler chasing, and
pregnancy surviving. Though we love being parents,
the busyness of parenthood has forced us to put
much more thought into spending quality time together.
Speaking of busyness, you don’t have to be a parent
to be busy. Busyness is an ailment that is rampant
in our culture, and that has created the need for additional intentionality in our relationships. Busyness
threatens our relationship with our Heavenly Father
and intentionality is necessary in spending quality
time with Him. Busyness threatens our relationships
within our families and intentionality is necessary in
spending quality time with them as well. Lastly, busyness also threatens our relationships within our
church family and intentionality is necessary in
spending quality time with them. All of these are incredibly important relationships and we need to be
intentional about investing in them.
In this edition of the Edge, we are going to be focusing on various EBC Retreats that will be happening in
2015. Would you consider participating in one or more
of these events? I believe that these are great opportunities to get away from life’s fast pace and set
aside time for your relationship with the Lord and
with your church family.
Whether or not you decide to participate in an EBC
retreat this year, would you consider how you can be
intentional in your relationships? I also hope you will
be encouraged as you read what is going on and what
God is doing through these various ministries!

Family Camp
My family and I had the privilege to attend
family camp, in 2014, for the first time. It was a
great opportunity for us to get to know the
other members of the church (body of Christ).
We are exhorted In Hebrews 10:24 "And let us
consider how to stir up one another to love and
good works, not neglecting to meet together,
as is the habit of some, but encouraging one
another, and all the more as you see the Day
drawing near." I was certainly stirred up by the
preaching to consider my high and holy calling
and continue to run this race with endurance.

Women’s Retreat
I have had the privilege of going on many Women's
Retreats. It is always such a wonderful time to get
away and spend time learning and spending time
with the Lord. Each year has been so different and
so good. I learn something different each and every
year that has enriched my life.
I also have enjoyed the all the conversations and
encouragement I have received from the many ladies I have gotten to talk with on each retreat. If you
have the chance, you should attend this next retreat. You will be blessed!
- Jessica Roth
There were many who had the mind to make it
a really good and fun time for all, by way of
skits and games that helped us get to know
one another and draw us in to be closer knit
together. We are a diverse body, but need
each and everyone to perform their part God
has called them to, so the body functions as
one.
I'm very thankful for the organizers who took
the time to plan and prepare the event with
comfortable accommodations and many good
meals and snacks (which my children enjoyed
very much) so we could focus and enjoy our
time with the various families.
Jr. High Retreat
Last March, I was able to go on my first Lifeguard’s
Retreat and I can positively say that it was one of the
year’s highlights. The experience meant a lot to me.
I was encouraged to work with what we heard
in God's word so I can continue steadfast in
the faith, as is written in Colossians 1:23,
"established and firm, and do not move from
the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of
which I, Paul, have become a servant."
One memory that I’ll never forget was walking to the
lighthouse in the pouring down rain. It was wet and
cold, but it still managed to be extremely enjoyable because of the people I was with. It was a perfect time to
have fellowship with old friends along with new ones.
Many new friendships were formed, as well as getting
to know others even better.
I look forward to next year's event and how I
can be along in encouraging and making it
good for the others.
I am extremely thankful for Tom and Annette for teaching Lifeguards, along with the church, and everyone
else who helps out every week. The time and dedication they put into this job is amazing. I’m already
looking forward to this year’s trip!

hil and Emily Kelly live in Silverton with their five children. Phil works in technical support for the
education department. Emily is a stay-at-home mom. She home schools their oldest three children,
ten-year-old Sawyer, eight-year-old Jubilee, and seven-year-old Evi. While their five- and three-yearold haven’t officially started school, Emily does give Brighton and Glorielle preschool work. Not only
do they get to learn too, but it also helps keep them busy while their mother is working with their
siblings!
Phil Kelly grew up in Turner. His parents aren’t Christians, and as a child his only exposure to church
was an occasional Sunday spent with his great-grandmother. One of Phil’s high school friends was a
Christian, however, and through their friendship he began to ask questions and accepted Christ as
his Savior. As soon as he graduated, Phil knew he wanted to attend a Christian college. He transfered his credits from Chemeketa to Western Baptist College (now Corban University) in Salem and
earned a degree in education. Meanwhile, Emily grew up in southern Oregon. Her family went to
church regularly, but her faith didn’t have a large impact on her life. After high school, Emily moved
to Seattle and received a degree in education from Seattle Pacific University.
After graduation, Emily returned to Oregon and began teaching at Eugene Fields Elementary School
in Silverton. Shortly thereafter, Phil and a friend were trying to rent a duplex. The landlady knew
Emily and decided to do some matchmaking, but despite her encouragement Phil had no intention
of going on a blind date. However, when the landlady called him to say she had told Emily to expect
his call, he felt he had to make contact. They met in December and found their interests and
worldview fit together so well they began talking about marriage before the month was out. They
married in August, less than a year later.
Both Phil and Emily point to the birth of their children as a turning point in their spiritual lives. They
began to ask deeper questions about their faith and seriously consider the connection between their
faith and their daily lives. Although neither of them witnessed Bible reading in their homes they began to schedule time for family devotions. A desire to

disciple their children led to the decision to homeschool.

The Kellys began attending EBC in the spring of 2012.
They are grateful for the family-friendly environment
and the scriptural culture. The Kellys usually attend
second service and are looking forward to the day
when the new sanctuary is complete so they can worship with the whole church.

- Canyonview Camp Canyonview Camp and Ministries was founded in 1953 as Bible Teaching Inc. by Ernie and Fern Campbell. Starting with 64
acres of land, their dream was to start a ministry that would allow people of all ages to hear the truth of the Gospel. Ministries
included radio broadcasting, a Bible college, a printing press, and finally a Christian camp. With each of these ministries, Canyonview's emphasis has been and always will be “Speaking the Truth in Love."
With a biblical foundation, Canyonview provides a safe outdoor environment, spiritually vibrant programs, and practical
leadership training to impact youth, adults, and families in the local community and beyond. Through a wide range of activities and
events Canyonview continues to serve God.
This past year they had over 400 people attend overnight camps. There were just over 1,000 Day Campers. God provided
40 teens to participate in the Teens In Ministry program. There were over 50 summer staff members. In all of these programs,
Gods word is taught though the Bible. At the Fall Collaboration Banquet, over 270 attended and God provided over $45,000.00 in
support!
- Mark and Jessica Stucky - Samuel
This third generation Stucky missionaries
Mark Jessica and their new son, Samuel, are in
California studying language skill in preparation to
move to South Brazil this year. They are serving in
several ministries in their home Church of the Canyons just as they have for several years. Their goal
is to join the church planting team in South Brazil
organized by his parent Phil and Rachel.
They’re directed by book of Acts, as we
are all reminded, that faithfulness in ministry begins right here, where we are at. Philip the evangelist started out by fulfilling a need at his church in
Antioch in Acts 6, and only later became the missionary/evangelist that we know so well in Acts 8.
So it is with great joy that they give themselves to
the Lord’s work.
- Dr. Debbie Eisenhut -
EBC has supported Debbie Eisenhut for many years as she has
been working as a Doctor in Liberia. She has been on home assignment as
she awaits her next step with God’s direction.
While home she has been speaking to many groups and individuals about the Ebola crisis in Liberia and the needs there. In early December she traveled to Annistion, AL (near Atlanta) to participate with the
CDC in courses for health care workers going to work in Ebola units. They
allowed her to give her PowerPoint talk three times each week so that
nearly every student saw it. There were many opportunities to glorify the
name of Jesus and to be salt and light. She will return after the first of the
year for another course.
She is discerning with her field director as to the timing of her
return to Liberia. She would like to return even though not much surgery
is going on right now. Even the general medical care given is limited due
to the Ebola crisis. But this might also be a good time to
- Dr. Mike and Ann Mara - Michael & Jane
go elsewhere for a while to study some additional
surgical skills.
Mike and Ann Mara and family serve in Kenya Kajabe Hospital.
They see a constant stream of really sick and badly injured paMark, Jess & Samuel Stucky
tients. They talk and pray with them, give them the best medical care
they can, and hope for the best. Most patients thrive, heal up well, and
go on with their lives. Others suffer greatly, and not all of them survive.
They have now been in Kenya a little over two years. One of
the biggest challenges is learning how best to interact with a new culture. Ann has been working with her Kenyan colleagues in Resource
Mobilization. This involves "getting the word out" about the amazing
ministry and testimony of Kijabe Hospital. Though the hospital is widely
known in East Africa, few people outside Africa know how brightly and
how far Christ's light shines through the many Kijabe Ministries. Mike
has been involved in discipling and teaching young Kenyan doctors at
Kijabe hospital, in addition to taking care of the endless stream of sick,
injured, and disadvantaged patients who come to Kijabe every day.
They continually reminded of confirmation that Kijabe is the
right place for them. When they really down, and feel like they are ineffective, they remember that in our weakness, He is made strong and
Dr. Eisenhut
glorified.

Youth Sermon Notes for Kids
Starting in January!
Have you ever wished that once your kids
‘graduated’ from Children’s Church, that they could
engage with ‘Big Church’ a little more? Even if your
kids, are of the group that never attended Children’s
Church, and have sat quietly in the pews, perhaps it
is difficult for them to really track with all that is going on. Well, starting in January, Children’s Ministry
will provide ‘Youth Sermon Notes’ for children, 1st6th grade (or any who want them). On this page
they will listen for things throughout the service and
take note of it. (see the sample on the back of the
calendar).
Filling out sermon notes will train kids to listen for
the main idea of the sermon, think about what they
learn about God from the passage, see how the
worship songs relate, note new vocabulary, and
have an opportunity to write down questions that
come up. That helps develop critical thinking skills
that promote good interpretation of Scripture.
Parents, this is a great opportunity for you to engage in discussion with your kids about what you all
learned at church Sunday. Instead of hearing,
“Church was boring”, can you imagine sitting down
at lunch and asking, ‘What does everybody think the
big idea of the sermon was today?” Or “What were
the 2 new words you heard today?” Why not reward kids for filling out a month’s worth of Sermon
Notes? Anything that helps kid’s participate and
focus is well worth the reward! Ultimately, it is up
to you as the parent, to help kids become engaged
with what goes on during our Sunday morning times
together…but it is my hope that these pages will be
a helpful tool in the training and spiritual development of our kids at EBC!

January 2015
Dear Emmanuel Bible Church Kids,
Thank you so much for your very generous contribution to buy a DVD player and TV for the pediatric
ward at ELWA Hospital. I know that represents a
huge sacrifice for you. I know that the kids will enjoy
the gift. And thank you for all of the DVD’s!! They
are terrific! Your giving, prayers and continued interest in the ministry in Liberia are much appreciated. It is heartening to know that so many people like
you care about the people of Liberia.
I enjoyed coming to EBC. You all gave me a lovely
welcome. Thank you!!
The Ebola crisis in Liberia continues even as it has
faded a bit from the headlines. The staff at ELWA
Hospital risk their lives to continue to try to see selected obstetric and a few other types of patients. It
is a grim time in Liberia. Schools remain closed and
public gatherings are forbidden. But the Liberian
church is praying for an end to the epidemic as it
struggles to meet the needs of hurting church members. It is hard to watch from afar.
I want to return to Liberia to help at the hospital but
am praying about wisdom and waiting on mission
leadership regarding the timing. Surgery in the context of an Ebola epidemic is particularly risky so not
much surgery is done even though many people are
dying of treatable surgical illnesses. This is a great
tragedy. Please
pray for Liberia,
protection for the
ELWA staff and for
wisdom for SIM
leadership.
May God bless you
this Christmas and
in the coming New
Year.
Blessings in Jesus,
- Dr. Debbie

An All Church Family Dinner Event!
How it works:
This is a fun WHOLE FAMILY EVENT to get to know your church family better!
You have the option to sign up as a HOST or GUEST:
HOST: Sign up that you would like to host in your home, and how many people

1pm. The host makes the main dish and everyone else will bring the sides.
OR
GUEST: Sign up that you would like to be a guest and how many people are in
your party. Then you will be grouped together with different families and will
receive an instruction card in your box the Sunday before the meal, telling you
where to go and what food dish to bring. You will not know who else you will be
dinning with until you arrive.
The suspense of wondering who you will be enjoying dinner with is great fun!
And you will get to know your church family in a more intimate dinner setting.
