… Movies With A Difference
Is pleased to present:
Monday September 14, 2009, 7:00 p.m.
Away We Go
*Running time: 93 minutes
Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary
Road) takes us on an intimate and hilarious ride across the continent
with a charming pair of parents-to-be, Veronica and Burt (played by
Maya Rudolf of A Prairie Home Companion and John Krasinski of The
Office and Shrek the Third.)
Just a few months away from becoming parents, the couple sets off
to find an ideal place to raise their child. Their search for a new home
takes them across the continent as the pair connects with old friends
and workmates from Phoenix to Montreal.
Along the way, Mendes works in some great performances from the
likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton and Allison Janney, elevating an
extremely competent indie movie to something much more powerful.

Moon
*Running time: 97 minutes
It’s Ground Control to Major Tom indeed, as Duncan Jones, (whose pa
happens to be David Bowie,) chooses for his directoral debut a futuristic
tale of a man (Sam Rockwell) rounding out a solo three-year stint working on the moon.
Well, he’s not quite alone; he has with him his buddy GERTY the sardonic computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey.) Tell me if you’ve heard this
one before.
Our hero just wants to get home to his wife and young daughter. But
after an accident sends him to the infirmary, he learns more about himself than he cares to.
Jones thoughtfully explores themes of isolation, claustrophobia, meaning and self. It takes chutzpah to tackle science fiction as a first feature,
especially as son of you-know-who. Jones is as courageous as he is traditional, eschewing CGI for models, to great effect.
