PROGRAMME 2016 Message from Mr Antonello De Riu Message from Miss Sabrina Chiu Yeng Ho T I The Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong and Macau and Chairman of Bellissima Italia he annual “Bellissima Italia” festival, coordinated by the Italian Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau and held each year from September to December, is dedicated to the promotion of Italian culture, lifestyle and iconic “Made in Italy” products. Italians enjoy a unique quality of life that is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. It celebrates simplicity and tranquility combined with warmth, good manners and spontaneity: the ability to perceive the beauty in small things, the role that art and music play in enhancing the quality of life, the pleasure from tasting a good wine. These are also the qualities reflected in products “Made in Italy”, synonymous worldwide with quality and glamour. Chinese and Italian culture have been influencing each other for at least 700 years and contemporary Italy is hardly unknown to Hong Kong and Macau. But there is still so much more to experience. Through “Bellissima Italia”, now a registered Hong Kong trademark, this year the Consulate is gathering together more than 70 events organized by various public entities and private companies, including concerts, evenings at the opera and theatre, exhibitions of both Italian artists and local artists working on Italian subjects, talks and get-togethers on Italian traditions and the special characteristics of our economy and society, food and wine tastings, and many others. The key to the Italian lifestyle is sharing – sharing a meal, a bottle of wine, good company, a cultural experience – and “Bellissima Italia” is similarly organized around the concept of sharing the strengths and experiences of the local and Italian communities. Co-Vice Chairlady of Bellissima Italia t is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd Bellissima Italia Festival featuring the dazzling and unique lifestyle of Italy in Hong Kong. Following the success of last year, we endeavour to continue to celebrate the lifestyle and culture of Italy in Hong Kong and Macau. This year, Bellissima Italia 2016 will run for over three months, from September to December. The Festival features a dazzling cultural diversity of more than 70 events, such as performances, exhibitions, food and wine events, art and music happenings. We have put together an array of exciting activities and would like to celebrate the Italian culture and traditions throughout the territory of the pearls of the Orient – Hong Kong and Macau. A note of appreciation for the continuous support of the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Chamber of Commerce and the Dante Alighieri Society in making it possible for us to help staging the Festival in a true Italian and collaborative spirit; and for bringing the people of Hong Kong and Macau closer to the Italian way of life. We hope the local community will enjoy the exciting activities designed especially for the occasion. The exhibition will be composed by a range of fundamental works spanning from the early seventies to the late nighties, retracing the career of this Italian master who was associated with the Zero movement and the magazine Azimuth, created with fellow artist and friend Piero Manzoni. Enrico Castellani was a key figure of the flourishing European avant-garde scene of the 1950’s and 1960’s tackling minimalism, spatiality and revolutionizing the notion of canvas. The show focuses on the seminal body of work Superfici (Surfaces): shaped relief canvases that Castellani started working on as early as 1959 and is still producing. These canvases signify and mark a historical moment when there was an essential quest for the dimensional and a land marking shift in the use of the canvas: it was no longer confined to being a background tool in aide of the abstract gesture but an active, physical and expanding surface that demands to exist. Although he draws principally on the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, the essence of the national cuisine is recreated through reference to the many and varied local Italian cuisines. Artusi’s recipes were tried and tested in his home kitchen with the aid of Marietta Sabatini, an intelligent and enterprising young girl. The “Mariettes’ Association” was established in her name, and operates today to preserve this unique culinary heritage. Whoever keeps a painting of Luigi Giacobbe gets into a atmosphere of emotion, and wants to understand and touch the artwork that emanates communicative energy. Luigi Giacobbe: “Adding one image to the next is like choosing one story out of the vastness of possible stories. In my work the space has always haunted me. And I always wondered where reality is actually having its hiding spot. In the construction of the image or in the missing links. When creating a series the pictures are like all grammatical elements at once. Subject, verb etc. There is no beginning and no end.” Organised by Novalis Contemporary Art + Design Venue Novalis Contemporary Art + Design, G/F, 5 Sau Wa Fong, Wan Chai Opening on Thursday 15th December Time 5 pm - 10 pm 15 Visual Arts December Exhibition: Saturno Buttò – FREE EVENT Saturno Buttò: “Saturnicore” “I love to mix things… Sacred and prophane, for example. I always went for some amusement through painting. Still I uphold my flair for portraits. For I enjoy so much creating and looking at them. Then. The figures must spring pure in the painting. As I conceived them the very first moment. Once I finished it, I may devote myself to gaze at it and think over the implications it would mean”.
