Canada Market Analysis Highlights March 2017 Background A Canada-focused, deep dive research investigation Ascertain underlying issues and identify untapped opportunities in Eastern Canada Designed to provide insights to guide Canadian marcom efforts: Does it make sense to treat Canada like an in-state campaign? Is more of a promotional vs. ad strategy appropriate? Where in Canada should the MOT promote and why? Is it worth it to go all-in on French language translation? Two phases: qualitative focus groups & quantitative online survey Qualitative Methodology • Two focus groups (one with past visitors and one with prospective visitors) were conducted in each of 3 markets--Halifax, Ottawa, and Montreal--for a total of six groups. A total of 57 consumers participated. Focus Groups • To qualify respondents met the following criteria: – – – – – – Age 25-64 Mix of men and women Trip decision-maker Own a passport and have taken at least one trip to the U.S. in the past 2 years or plan to take a trip to the U.S. in the next 12 months Fall into one of Maine’s key priority segments: “Balanced Achievers,” “Genuine Originals,” or “Social Sophisticates” Are not Maine avoiders (open to visiting Maine in the future) • Participants were paid CAN$100 for their participation in the focus group and an additional CAN$25 for a completed homework assignment. • In Montreal, a professionally-trained French-speaking moderator was hired to moderate the sessions in French (Quebecois). Focus Group Objectives Determine how eastern Canadians view Maine as a vacation destination (vs. what they can find in Canada), and what U.S. destinations they consider similar to/replacement for Maine Understand what motivates eastern Canadians to visit Maine for leisure—what drives/underpins/triggers visitation relative to how they fill their time when actually in Maine For those who have ever visited but haven’t returned, why not? Ascertain what type of trip they consider Maine to be and what the perceived price-value of a Maine vacation is Identify which dimensions, expressions or aspects of originality are most appealing and how Maine’s originality brand platform is perceived (esp. relative to Quebec) Methodology Two focus groups—1 with past visitors and 1 with prospective visitors—conducted in each of 3 markets —Halifax, Ottawa, and Montreal—for 6 groups total with 57 consumers Conducted May 10-12, 2016 Qualification criteria: Ages 25-64 Mix of men and women Trip decision-maker Own passport; have taken 1+ trips to the U.S. in past 2 years or plan to take a trip to U.S. next year In MOT’s 3 priority segments: “Balanced Achievers,” “Genuine Originals” or “Social Sophisticates” Not Maine avoiders In Montreal, a professionally-trained researcher moderated the sessions in French (Quebecois) Low Visibility + Content Deficit Low awareness of MOT advertising/visibility of a real invitation to visit combined with a lack of specific content is perhaps the greatest challenge There are contributing factors like the exchange rate; however, without sufficient context and content about Maine to provide new motivations, reasons to visit, and/or interesting expectations for the experience, Eastern Canadians do not have enough mental ammunition or emotional engagement to overcome the perceived similarity of Maine to Canada or other New England states What Would Motivate a Trip to Maine? “Novelty. It needs to be hip, cool, and trendy. A new scene: art, museum, world renown, food, films.” “ I’ll go back without convincing because of the ski hills. More discounts would entice me sooner than later. Ski resort packages. Beach packages.” “Ecotourism. A week-long ocean kayaking package with campground, day trips, and hiking. A ski package for a weekend that is cheap enough to offset the convenience of skiing locally. Stores that we don’t have here.” “Historical value – learn about an iconic event that happened there.” “Festivals, crafts, culture, music, theater, museums.” “You need something you can only do there.” “Old boats you could visit that would be docked there and accessible for a couple months of the year.” “What is its historical relevance to America and the original 13 colonies?” “Shipwrecks, glass-bottom boat tours, pirate legends. Develop a tourist group to see all the significant spots.” “Park pass. Toronto has a pass where you can see the zoo and aquarium – you can see multiple things for one price.” “National Parks.” Content vs. Brand Based on the focus groups, a content and PR/promotion strategy seems more suitable than a traditional ad strategy At its most basic, developing Top 5 or Top 10 lists, trip ideas, and possible itineraries would begin to flesh out gaps in content Market specificity is key to content development: In Nova Scotia, trips to Maine are singularly about shopping, so content would have to begin there and create short-throw opportunities to experience more of Maine from that jumping off point—perhaps taking in a show or concert In Montreal, there is an orientation toward family, nostalgia and beach trips—so building itineraries that offer new venues from this vantage point would make sense Halifax Ottawa Montreal Possible Cultural Difference An apparent desire for a more overt and directed call-to-action about what their “Maine thing” is or should be, compared to the U.S. where the self-directed message of “find/discover your Maine thing” works Eastern Canadians don’t want to wrack their brains over a trip—they see Maine as simple, easy, quiet, relaxed, going with the flow, and quaint—their trip planning should reflect that sensibility Moreover, given their content deficit, they do not seem to have enough understanding to interpret the call-to-action as about themselves vs. the tangible things to see and do on a trip to Maine Maine Originality Most did not initially perceive Maine to be original—due to the content deficit of specific aspects of Maine that are distinctive, renown or iconic: “If you were from the west going to Maine you’d see originality but we don’t because we’re similar.” “I’d be more enticed to go by knowing the shopping is different but a lot of other aspects are similar to home.” “It would have to be different from my own backyard for originality to work. Boston is different, original.” “If you’re looking for food, I don’t think of Maine for that. If you want lighthouses PEI is great for that. Coastal things can be found in Canada. Maine doesn’t seem unique.” “I’d usually lump Maine in with New England or lump it in with the Maritime Provinces and wonder how it’s different from either.” However, two interpretations of Maine they did consider “original” are 1) learning more about it and finding out new things, and 2) the “classic-true to your roots-unchanging” sense of the state Quantitative Survey Survey Objectives Gauge Some past visitors continue to come back, but there are many seeking new experiences– examples of which should be included in marcom When it comes to being self-directed (wanting to discover and plan on their own) or externally-directed (wanting the destination to tell them what to do), roughly half don’t strongly agree or disagree with either but rather feel somewhat described by both This suggests that the “discover your Maine Thing” approach needs to be supported with tangible suggestions, keeping in mind past visitors tend to be more self-directed Target Balanced Achievers Of MOT’s 3 priority segments, Balanced Achievers show strongest interest in a Maine vacation in response to a variety of content: Top 10 list, two-nation vacations, Discover New England, feedback/reviews from past visitors Of the 16 interest areas tested, Balanced Achievers are more interested in 13 of them compared to one or both other priority segments Balanced Achievers have stronger familiarity with Maine than the other segments, and more of them perceive it to be different from destinations in New England and Canada However, they’re more sensitive to the exchange rate, so discounts on lodging and package deals will help them see the value in a Maine vacation They’re more externally-directed than the other segments, which means the website, marcom, and advertising should make it easy for them quickly pick up on the must-see things to see/do in Maine Balanced Achievers are the largest of the three priority segments in Eastern Canada (26.4%) Marcom Should Be Offered in French In Quebec it is recommended that collateral and advertising be translated into French Canadian 41% speak French only More than one-third expect materials in their market to be in French Since Then… Year End 2016 for Maine After two years of consistent declines in Canadian visitation, 2016 showed an increase of 11.9%—Canadian visitation in 2016 returned to the levels seen in 2012 Canadian Direct Tourism Expenditures are also up this year—Canadian retail expenditures making up 22.1% of total tourism expenditures in Maine Recent Headlines Travel Weekly has set the decline in foreign tourism at 6.8% Forward Keys, a well-known firm of travel statisticians, reports web flight searches for trips heading to the U.S. out of all international locations down by 17% Global Business Travel Association, says in a single week following a new policy announcement, the activity of business travel declined by nearly $185 million Q&A APPENDIX Age & Cohort To qualify for this study, respondents had to be ages 25-64.
