Grogansworth Merino Stud is a family-run business between the towns of Yass and Boorowa in the south-east of New South Wales, Australia. With targeted classing and breeding a stable genetic base has been created which retains a large frame, wool cut and fertility, combined with soft handling, white, water-resistant fine-medium wool of 19 microns. The Grogansworth Merino Stud is run in conjunction with a self-replacing commercial Merino flock of approximately 10,000 head. Negligible rain fell during summer, so after weaning feeding continued through to late June. After such a hot, dry summer and autumn we have now had the other extreme. From May to mid-August, Grogansworth has recorded almost 350ml or 14 inches. Rain was recorded on 17 days in June and 22 days in July, with some locals saying it has been as wet as 1974. As we near spring, we have a full moisture profile and over-flowing dams. 9th Annual Grogansworth Ram Sale Mark Taylor, from selling agent Schute Bell, manager of the Goulburn branch r in g t can be contacted on: O f fe p P: 02 4821 1141 M: 0428 211 151 E: [email protected] e ug/S 90 A drop 2015 Rams ino Mer months in 6½ ool w MONDAY 17 OCT 3PM AVAIL ABLE PHONE: 02 6227 6085 GROGANSWORTH, 888 LACHLAN VALLEY WAY, BOWNING, 2582 Kim Henderson 0429 839 889 George Henderson 0427 434 343 Classer: Ian Marwedel 0429 151 419 Stud Rep: Michael Elmes 0429 847 552 Contact via email [email protected] V i si t u s o n li n e: g r o g a n s wo r t h .c o m . a u 2015 ANNUAL RAM SALE Story Courtesy THE LAND NEWSPAPER by Stephen Burns, The Land. All 89 rams offered were August/ September 2014 drop paddock prepared, with 81 selling at auction to average $1572, and 3 selling afterwards. Buyers Andrew Bodman, “Woongara”, Skipton, Victoria and Kingslea Partnership (Caroline Spittle and her daughter, Rosemary Mitchell), “Kingslea”, Bookham, NSW paid equal top price of $3200. Mr Bodman has been buying rams from Grogansworth for 15 years and said they performed well in his district. “I’m looking for more size, which gives us the opportunity to have big sheep to sell off-shears. They have to be top wool cutters with heavy long-stapled bright and soft fleeces”, Mr Bodman said. Purchasers commented on the well presented, structurally correct rams, growing heavy fleeces of fine-medium wool. Repeat and new buyers supported the sale, with rams going to Coolac, Jugiong, Bookham, Reid’s Flat, Bathurst, Young, Millthorpe , Stockinbingal, Yass; and Victorian districts of Balmoral and Skipton. With the equal top-priced ram at $3200, purchased by Caroline Spittle and Rosie Mitchell, “Kingslea”, Bookham, are Kim and George Henderson, Grogansworth Merino Stud, Bowning; Rosemary Mitchell, Ian Marwedel, Sydney, and Rocky Henderson, Grogansworth. Due to the prem shearing (moving shearing a month earlier), the hot, dry summer and autumn, the staple length averaged 88 mm for grown sheep, which suited the requirements of processors. Italian interests purchased a number of fleece lines. The entire clip, including oddments, averaged $2001 per bale, or 1,052 c/kg greasy. Fleece lines brought up to 80 c/kg above their respective micron indicators, signifying their excellent quality. The average micron of the clip was down 1 to 1.3 microns this year, due to seasonal conditions. 2016 FLEECE TEST RESULTS Mic CF VM Yield SL SS Mob Description Greasy Price AUSFINE AAAAA 18.2 99.5 0.9 77.4 82 38 Adult Sheep 1227 AUSFINE AAAA 18.5 99.5 0.4 78.4 82 43 2 Yr Old Wethers 1220 AUSFINE AAAA 18.3 99.5 0.8 78.0 95 37 Stud and Flock Ewes 1188 AUSFINE AAAA 15.8 99.5 1.3 76.2 70 48 Wether Weaners 1230 AUSFINE MBKN 15.5 99.4 3.8 70.9 64 43 All Weaners 981 AUSFINE MBKN 17.7 99.3 4.3 64.9 85 37 Adult Sheep 895 MLKS 17.5 99.4 1.4 70.5 Adult Sheep 785 CLIENT NEWS Geoff Redmond, Boigu, Berremangra, near Jugiong, NSW Andrew Bodman, Woongara, Skipton, Victoria Neil Gaussen, Melville Forest/Vasey Road, Balmoral, Victoria Geoff is delighted with the development of his distinct Grogansworth type, which meets his criteria of heavy fine/ medium wool cutting, combined with an excellent carcass. His sire 080020 was a top Merino Stud at Grogansworth. In recent years we have been asked by prospective clients, and some existing clients, if we were breeding any poll rams; and we would like to service this market. We plan to breed a poll sheep with the same wool cut, fertility and frame that our horned sheep are renowned for. In February this year a poll sire was purchased from One Oak Poll Stud at Jerilderie. 140011 was selected for his wool quality and cutting potential, and performer in the North East Victoria Sire Evaluation of 2011. 140011 tested 19.2m, 3.2 SD, 16.7 CV and 99.7 CF. Semen was also purchased from One Oak Poll 120014, with the AI taking place in March. This sire has beautiful soft handling, deep crimping wool of a type that will stand any amount of rain. 120014 has already bred show champions. Lambs by these sires started hitting the ground in August and will be in our on-property sale next year. Grogansworth client of 30 years, Kingslea Partnership, was the winner of the Bookham Ewe Competition in February 2016. Grogansworth Merino Stud congratulates mother and daughter Caroline Spittle and Rosemary Mitchell on their consistent success. Both judges complimented Kingslea Partnership on the presentation, condition score and management of these ewes. Rick Baldwin said, “The doing ability of the ewes is outstanding, as is their capacity, which has so much to do with fertility. They are very well grown and look outstanding, a fantastic line of ewes.” V I S I T US O N L I N E ! grogansworth.com.au Caroline Spittle and Rosemary Mitchell, Kingslea Partnership, Sheep Classer Ian Marwedel, and George Henderson, Grogansworth Merino Stud. At the first shearing of the 9 months section, in June 2016, Grogansworth was placed 2nd for gross value return. The full results for both sections will be published after the 12 month shearing section’s shearing in September 2016. Matthew Coddington said, “My first impression is this is a really productive and profitable mob of sheep; this is what I’ve been talking about this morning; it can be done.” “This is the type of sheep which, if you put in the genetics, and the management, you can breed very profitable sheep that are very competitive and are way ahead of a cross-bred lamb enterprise because you are getting body weight, carcase yield and a lot of wool. It’s the wool that’s going to jump the Merino enterprise $30 - $40 per head in front of any cross-bred lamb enterprise. This is the potential of this flock, with this sort of capacity and productivity.” PHONE: 02 6227 6085 GROGANSWORTH, 888 LACHLAN VALLEY WAY, BOWNING, 2582 Kim Henderson 0429 839 889 George Henderson 0427 434 343 Classer: Ian Marwedel 0429 151 419 Stud Rep: Michael Elmes 0429 847 552 Contact via email [email protected]
